Story
Meet Pollo Frito! This laid-back boy is the king of relaxation—he loves to nap, soak up the sun, and enjoy life at his own pace. But don’t be fooled by his chill vibes—when the mood strikes, he’ll entertain himself with zoomies and playful antics! Pollo Frito has a soft spot (literally) for cozy surfaces and an even softer spot for cream cheese—his absolute favorite treat. He walks well on a leash but might voice his opinion about bikes and motorcycles. While he took some time to warm up to his people, once he did, his big personality came shining through! Pollo would thrive in a home without other dogs where he can soak up all the love and attention. If you're looking for a relaxed, quirky, and independent pup to brighten your days, Pollo Frito is your guy! Pollo Frito had complications following heartworm treatment. Caval syndrome was suspected and there may be residual cardiac damage. He is currently on two types of medications called Sildenafil and Vetmedin. While he is at the HSNCF, his medication and his continued care are supported by a generous anonymous donor through our Path to Adoption Fund.

Story
Rescued from the forest area, this little girl is lucky to be alive! She is timid and sweet. The good Samaritans that found her had to trap her because she was so afraid. She is doing well with love and kindness and we are working on finding her a forever family. She is young.  With adult teeth but possibly still under a year.  Bailey will need a fenced in property as she is a flight risk.  She is shy at first and scared to trust.  Once you earn her trust she is a silly girl.  She ADORES cats and loves to play with both dogs and cats.  She is a happy little girl but it is evident that she has not lived a happy life before coming to us.  Every new noise, anything new that you introduce her to scares her.  She will need an understanding home. ##2345741##

Story
Hi there! My name is Bestie! I'm called Bestie because I want to be everyone's best friend! I really love all people. I came from a rough situation, a hoarding case with 28 dogs living in a pen outside. We were in such a small space that we were constantly fighting each other, so I came to VOCAL in pretty rough shape, skinny and covered in scars and wounds. My foster home has helped me heal and become more confident, my wounds are all healed, though I'll always be a bit scarred from my experiences. I've been enjoying being in a foster home without any other dogs, I tend to be afraid of them. I can coexist with cats, but I really think I'd prefer to be the only animal in the house to enjoy the peace and quiet. I'm on the smaller side, only 18 lbs and with short stubby legs! I'm pretty lazy and enjoy a nice long nap cuddled under some blankets with my person. I'd really love to find a nice quiet home to settle down in.

Story
Skittles came into rescue because his elderly owners decided that they weren't the best fit for Skittles. Skittles mom was on oxygen and Skittles was so clingy that he would get tangled in her tube and they were worried that she or his dad would trip over him and her tubes. They have his brother also but the brother can be more independent than Skittles and listens better. They were becoming frustrated with Skittles and his behavior. He would also come in and potty on the floor, after being outside. Skittles would whine, bark and cry if he was not getting their attention. They, admittedly, gave more attention to the better behaved brother so it is possible that Skittles was just acting out in a negative way. We have not really seen him behaving poorly here. He does whine to come in when outside because it doesn't seem like he wants to be out there any longer than need be. He is crated at night and has not made any messes in his crate. He has been with other small dogs (males and females) and gas done fine with them. He is kind of a wall flower, though, and is not overly playful. He prefers to sit off by himself, unless it's dinner time. Although he was not raised around children, he seems to be fine with them...at least older kids. We probably would not advise he go to grabby children/toddlers as we are not sure how he would react. He hasn't been around cats, to our knowledge but he seems like he would do fine with them, with proper introductions. We were told that he would scream on car rides but we did not experience that bringing him home or taking him to the vet. He rode fine for us. Skittles is leash trained also and despite being a poor fit for his elderly parents, has been well cared for. We believe he would do great in a home where he can be with his family most of the time. He is not overly active so a slow paced home would be fine with him. He is overweight (obese, actually) and could stand to lose several pounds to prevent future back issues, which can be very problematic for dachshunds because of their long bodies. Skittles is a very sweet boy who just needs a family who can put their all into him because he will put his all into them. Skittles saw the vet on 10/27/25 and was found to have no issues. He has been started on Simparica Trio for flea control and heartworm prevention with us and had a negative heartworm test in January of 2025 with his original family. They had him on Negard Plus. He also had a negative fecal in January of 2025. We did not retest him since his family kept him current on the Nexgard Plus monthly, which has a dewormer built in. Skittles weighed 23.1 pounds as of 10/27/25. He is very obese and needs to lose several pounds. We are working on helping him lose a few but his new family will also need to continue to get his weight down for his future health and well being. He is fully vetted now and ready to find his forever family. If interested in giving Skittles his forever home, please submit your interest and your adoption application via email or text ONLY to 352-215-3260 (phone calls will not be answered or returned from this number). Skittles's adoption fee will be $400 to help cover the cost of his vetting and daily care while with us. We will only consider applicants who complete the adoption application and will determine whether the applicant would be a good fit for Skittles based on the info provided in the application. If we feel that you will be a good match for him, we will set up a meet and greet appointment with you.

Story
GetALong Dachshund Rescue is delighted to present Lily! Lily is an 18 pound,  4 year old long haired cream beauty who is looking for a forever home. Please read on before applying to adopt Lily, to be sure that your home will be a good fit for this very special girl! Lily must be an only dog. She does not get along well at all with other dogs or cats. She has not been tested with children and for this reason she will only be available to a home with children 13 years of age and older. Lily loves to cuddle and be loved by her person! She is snuggly and loving in her foster home in Texas. Lily is a talker and will grumble and give love barks when she is looking for something special (like a cookie)! Lily will bark at every dog she sees out of the windows in her foster home. We suggest some behavioural training to help with this. Lily is house trained but like all dachshunds she requires a regular schedule. All rescue dogs go through a period of adjustment so understanding and patience is important. Lily is crate trained and leash trained. She will bark on walks when she meets other dogs and people.  Lily is completely charming when it’s time to go into her crate and  she will roll on her back and demand tummy rubs first! This girl has priorities. Lily likes car rides but since coming into rescue she is a bit concerned that she may be left behind. It will take time for Lily to feel secure in her new home. Lily is an extremely loving girl who would like a home where she can be her family’s treasure.  She would like a home where she can sleep in the big bed and where her people could be home most of the time. This lovely girl is waiting for the right home!  Will you be the lucky one to bring Lily home? Apply today to adopt this gorgeous girl!

Story
Meet Harley and Piper, an eight year old bonded pair. Harley is a happy 16 pounds and sweet Piper is 13 pounds. Harley and Piper are crate trained and housetrained. Like all dachshunds they should be reminded to go outside on a regular basis. Like all dogs, they will need to be confident in their environment to have good potty habits. All rescue dogs go through a period of adjustment, so understanding and patience is important. Harley and Piper are good with other dogs. They have not yet been tested with cats or children. Harley is a strong personality, and Piper is a calm, submissive girl. This lovely pair are very loving with their people. In their foster home in Alabama, they sleep in the big bed, and they are practicing their leash walking. Their favorite place is snuggling under blankies as much as they can. Piper has some allergies that affect her respiratory system, and needs to take antihistamines, and at times she may need low dose steroids. Harley (like many alpha dogs) has some separation anxiety and would like a home where his people can be home with him most of the time. Harley loves toys! So much so that he will tell any other dog that they are HIS! Piper feels the same way about food (but doesn’t every dachshund that you know?), and she will try to eat food from other bowls in her foster home. Harley and Piper are waiting for their forever family. Is it you? Apply to adopt them today!
