Story
Harley (female) 7 years 13 lbs Located in Raleigh area AKA: Harley Quinn, Lil Miss Priss (or Piss ), Missus, Sis/Sister, Miss Chevious Short list: Must be an only dog, working on housetraining, leash trained, crate trained, no cats, no kids under 10, eats prescription food for past GI issues Harley is a 13-pound diva with a big personality and even bigger feelings. She follows commands beautifully… but always makes sure to add her own commentary at the end. Yes, in true dachshund style, she's professional barker so no apartments or condos for this gal. Harley is a little anxious at times but endlessly gentle and loving. A gentle soul with a flair for the dramatic, Harley absolutely lives for affection (her fur is impossibly soft and she knows it). She’s a certified Velcro dog and an undisputed lovebug —if you sit down, expect company. If you lie down, expect to lose half the bed. Minimum. Harley is deeply devoted to her person and can be protective of her people from other dogs. We are looking for a home where she is the only dog. That said, she is not dog-reactive and does just fine seeing other dogs on walks or at the vet—she simply prefers to be the sole recipient of your attention. She is also not a fan of cats, so she needs a cat free home. She is also working on house training and will dramatically flop onto her belly if she thinks she’s in trouble (a consummate actress). Her new family should expect accidents and be prepared to continue working on housetraining. Harley eats well and has a history of GI issues, which are well managed with prescription food that keeps her feeling her best. Harley also had bladder stones in her past and had surgery so her new family will need to keep an eye out for urinary issues in the future. She is spayed, UTD on shots, heartworm negative, had bloodwork, had a dental, and microchipped. Harley is fostered in the Raleigh area and her new family must drive to her foster home to adopt - no transports. We prefer to adopt to families in VA, SC, NC, DC area, eastern TN, northern GA and WV. To apply to adopt, fill out an application at www.doxiebyproxy.org/application She’ll steal your spot, your blanket, and your whole heart—then bark once more, just to be sure you noticed. ##2623086##

Story
Meet Cooper: Tiny Shadow. Loyal Knight. Professional Project Dog. Ladies and gentlemen, allow us to introduce 16 pounds of mystery, devotion, and dramatic character development: Cooper. Breed? Yes. Color? Black. Backstory? Buckle up. Cooper once belonged to a homeless woman who loved him dearly but could no longer care for him. When he entered the local shelter, he was scared, shut down, and unsure of the world. His intake required a catch pole and some very scary moments for Cooper, and for three long days he trusted absolutely no one. And to be honest, who could blame him? And then… he chose someone. It took three days for one shelter staff member to see it — the flicker, the connection, the possibility. Once Cooper decided that person was safe, he began to bloom. That tiny crack in the armor revealed exactly what rescue is all about. Because Cooper is not just a dog. He is a project dog. And project dogs? They are the best dogs. At 3–4 years old and 16 perfect pounds, Cooper may start off cautious, observant, and politely skeptical of your intentions. It took him five full days to connect with his foster mom. Five days of patience. Five days of quiet reassurance. And then? The bond locked in like a vault. Once Cooper decides you are *his person*, you will never go to the bathroom alone again. You will never cook dinner without a tiny supervisor. You will never experience personal space in quite the same way — because Cooper becomes your shadow, your assistant, your most devoted admirer. He doesn’t just bond. He **attaches**. He is house trained. He is crate trained. He is excellent with other small dogs (though he would be perfectly content being the king of his own castle). We’re told he loves toys. We’re told he enjoys building elaborate toy nests and guarding them like a tiny dragon protecting treasure. Have we seen this majestic toy-hoarding behavior yet? No. He hasn’t trusted us quite enough to unveil that chapter. But honestly? We cannot wait for his chosen human to discover it. That’s the magic of Cooper — layers. He will need: * Someone home more often than not. * Someone patient for those first few days. * Someone who understands that trust is earned, not assumed. * Someone who secretly (or openly) wants a Velcro dog who believes the sun rises and sets on them. What you will get in return is not casual affection. You will get a once-in-a-lifetime bond. You will get loyalty that feels personal and intentional. You will get a dog who *chooses you*. Cooper is not the dog who runs up to every stranger. He is the dog who picks **his person** — and when he does, it is everything. If you are ready for a little challenge, a lot of devotion, and a 16-pound sidekick who will consider you his entire universe, Cooper is waiting. And trust us — when he decides you’re the one, it will be worth every second. (See cute video of Cooper undercover in the comments) To apply go to www.doxiebyproxy.org/application ##2660965##

Story
Meet Cook Out — your adventure-loving sidekick! Cook Out is a 3-year-old Dachshund/Beagle mix with a big personality packed into a perfect 20-pound frame. He was found hanging out in a Quality Inn parking lot (clearly waiting for his forever family) and is now ready to trade motel life for a cozy home of his own. This little guy loves to play and would thrive in a dog-savvy home with another higher-energy dog who’s ready to be his built-in best friend. Cook Out is smart, enthusiastic, and always up for fun—whether that’s a game of chase, a car ride, or heading out on a new adventure. He’d make an awesome hiking partner and will happily hop in the car to go wherever the day takes you. Cook Out does have a few quirks that make him extra special. He has some resource guarding tendencies (he likes the guard the lap of the individual he is snuggling at the time), so he’s looking for a home experienced with mild behavior challenges. The good news? He comes with free training in the Greensboro area to help set everyone up for success—Cook Out included! In the home, Cook Out is a rockstar: Crate trained Leash trained Great with cats Super friendly and polite when out and about If you’re looking for a wicked smart, playful, and loyal companion—and you enjoy working with a dog who will keep you on your toes—Cook Out might just be your perfect match. Ready to bring home a pup with personality, brains, and a love for adventure? Cook Out is waiting to meet you!  ##2547111##

Story
Woody7 years old9 poundsFostered in Fayetteville, NCShort list: No kids under 12, no high energy dogs, needs a calm dog buddy, someone home more than not (part-time/hybrid OK), calm home, had IVDD surgery 3 years ago and wears a belly band for urinary incontinence, no apartments/condosWoody is an absolute cutie with a heart as big as his personality. Once he falls in love with his people, he loves hard — the kind of loyal, devoted love where he won’t want to leave your side. If you’re looking for a constant companion, Woody is your guy. When meeting new men, Woody often takes a minute to accept them, usually barking and growling and acting ferocious in a way in typical dachshund style. But after a bit of time, especially after meeting them a few times, Woody accepts them as part of his pack and is their BFF. He will need a new family that is willing to work through these rough introductions and instruct visitors to give him space. Because of this, he needs a family with no kids or regular visitors under 12. If his new family has a man in it, they should be patient and willing to accept that it will likely be a rough few days till Woody trusts him.A few years ago, Woody had surgery for IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease), which left him with some incontinence. Because of this, he wears a belly band and does great with it. He’ll need an understanding adopter who’s comfortable managing his incontinence, but it’s just part of his routine now. He will come with a full wardrobe of reusable belly bands. He walks with a slight wobble, but it doesn’t slow him – he runs and plays and even stands up on his hand legs when he thinks he’s not getting enough attention. Check out the video in the comments to see how he walks.Woody landed in rescue when his owner was no longer able to take care of him. He had lived most of his life with another dog and we were prepared to take both dogs into our rescue – keeping them together as a bonded pair. Sadly, the owner gave away the other dog so in addition to losing his family, Woody lost his best friend. We are looking for a family that has a calm dog that can be his emotional support dog. However, fast-moving dogs of any size are not his style and he will bark at them.Woody is one of the biggest love bugs that’s landed in our arms in a while. And in true dachshund style, he wants to be the center of attention. Once you are one of his people, he Always wants to be in your lap or snuggled up close. He absolutely adores being petted and dotted on. And if he thinks he’s not getting enough attention, he will jump up on your leg to remind you that he is the most important person (in his mind anyway) in the universe.Because he loves so deeply, Woody likes his people where he can see them and has a bit of separation anxiety. We’ve found he does much better his people leave the house in a puppy pen than a crate – he comes with his very own pen, as well. He would do best with a family home more than not – part-time or hybrid would be fine. He also needs a single family home, no apartments or condos.Woody is UTD on shots, neutered, had a dental, microchipped and HW negative. His new family will need to drive to Fayetteville to adopt him – no transports. We prefer families in NC, VA, SC, eastern TN, DC area, WV, and northern GA. To get the process started, fill out an application at www.doxiebyproxy.org/application.Woody is incredibly devoted, affectionate, and full of personality. In the right home that can help him learn to accept strangers and manage his incontinence, he will be the most loyal little shadow you could ever ask for — your lap warmer, your walking buddy, your heart dog.   ##2638082##

If there’s an open lap, she’ll happily claim it for some snuggles.Keon came into rescue through no fault of her own—her previous owner became homeless and was living in their car—but her heart is full of love and she’s ready to find her forever family. She would thrive with an active household who can give her the exercise and engagement she adores. She takes a minute to warm up to new people, but once you are one of her people, she loves you to the moon and back. Story
Milo (Male)13 (ish) years old14 poundsFostered in Clayton, NCShort list: Independent, crate trained, good with working family, no kids under 12, gets along with other dogs, senior dachshund housetrained on a good scheduleMilo may be mostly blind and a little hard of hearing, but don’t let that fool you — his nose runs the show. Whether he’s navigating the house, exploring the yard, or magically appearing the second you even think about opening a snack, Milo’s sniffer is always on duty.Milo was adopted out a few years ago and was returned to us last year for being grumpy. We quickly learned that this boy was suffering from a horrible ear infection that was very painful, and likely causing himHis favorite hobby? Expert-level blanket burrowing. Milo can disappear so completely under a cozy throw that you’ll forget he’s there — until dinner time, of course. He’ll happily greet you at the door when you come home (he always knows), then it’s right back to his bed to tunnel in and resume his beauty sleep until the next important event… like dinner.Milo does great with other calm dogs and is currently living with four other senior dachshunds. He gets along good with cats as well. He values his independence and isn’t a big fan of being scooped up from the front or having his front legs grabbed. But if you approach him gently and start with a solid butt rub, you’ll quickly win him over.He allows short cuddle sessions but prefers to keep things on his terms — a distinguished gentleman with boundaries. Because he can be grumpy is approached too quicky when he doesn't know you are there, we are looking for a calm home without kids under 12.Unless he thinks you are holding out food on him, Milo is a very easy houseguest. He spends most of his time happily sleeping in his blankets. While his vision and hearing aren’t what they used to be, he can still detect loud voices and see some shadows. And he absolutely knows when someone walks through that door — if one human is home and the other arrives, Milo will get up to greet the newcomer without fail. Milo rides well in the car without issues. He’s crate trained and does a great job letting you know when he needs to go out by walking to the front or back door. Just don’t keep him waiting too long — otherwise, one of the rugs near the door might become his backup plan.Milo occasionally plays with his very favorite toy (Lambchop) and takes his role as Kitchen Assistant very seriously. Cooking? He’s there. Crumbs on the floor? Handled. Meal service running behind schedule? You will hear about it. He’s adorably vocal when it comes to food and makes sure everyone knows dinner should always be on time. Check out the video in the comments to see his dinnertime antics.Milo is UTD on shots, neutered, had a dental with extractions, microchipped, heartworm negative and had senior bloodwork (all looks good). He has a grade 3 heart murmur that does not need medication at this time and just needs to be monitored. Milo has had skin issues in his past so his new family will need to keep him on a good quality food and be prepared to manage any skin issues that arise.Milo is fostered in Clayton, NC and his new family will need to drive to the foster home to adopt. We prefer homes in NC, VA, SC, eastern TN, northern GA, DC area and WV. To get the process started to adopt, fill out an application at www.doxiebyproxy.org/applicationThis handsome dude is just looking for a warm, quiet and patient home that serves dinner on time. If you are looking for a dachshund that isn't all up in your business and you want to give a very deserving dachshund his five-star retirement home, then Milo is a perfect fit for you.  ##1502767##
