If Sassy isn't a fit for you, please share so we can find her people!
Sassy
Dachshund Mix
7 years old
11 pounds
Fostered in Raleigh
TLDR: Blind, housetrained, does good on a leash, playful, good with dogs, could be only dog, needs a cat free home, needs someone home more than not, needs single family home, kids over 8 years old
1. She's been through a lot — and she came out shining
Sassy was surrendered when her owner went into assisted living and ended up in a shelter, which is incredibly stressful for a blind dog. She didn't crumble. She adapted. She's now coming out of her shell more every single day, and that kind of resilience deserves a real home.
2. She’s a fearless little navigator
Sassy may be blind, but you’d hardly know it. She gets around like a pro, mapping out her world with confidence (and only the occasional polite “boop” into furniture). It’s honestly impressive to watch.
3. Built-in best friend energy
This girl bonds. Sassy will happily follow you from room to room like your devoted little shadow and is a champion cuddler—she loves falling asleep while touching her person. Personal space? Never heard of it. But because she loves so deeply, she needs someone home more than not.
4. Needs to be only dog or with super chill older dog
Sassy would do best as an only dog because she barks at some dogs and gets anxious, especially in new settings. She goes to doggy daycare and does just fine with those dogs, but didn't do well at a recent meet and greet. If you have a super chill senior dog, should would be fine. But otherwise, she would do best as the spoiled rotten only dog.
5. She's playful and loves her toys
Sassy is a playful girl who loves toys of all kinds — and her all-time favorite? An empty plastic bottle. Free, humble, and apparently perfect. She's been coming out of her shell more and more since coming into foster care, and her silly, fun side is absolutely worth sticking around for. Check out videos in the comments!
6. Her stress response is... um, enthusiastic???
When Sassy feels anxious, she copes by vigorously humping her bed. We're not here to kink-shame. It's her emotional support ritual, her cardio, and honestly her most committed hobby. With love, stability, and patience, this behavior is expected to improve — but until then, fair warning: her bed has seen things. She's working on it. Aren't we all.
7. She loves walks and adventures — and she's a dream on a leash
Don't let the blindness fool you — Sassy is ready to hit the trail. She does great on a leash and genuinely enjoys getting out and exploring the world, sniffing every inch of it. She's the perfect adventure buddy for anyone who wants a small dog with big-dog energy on walks.
8. She's vocal at first — but she settles
Sassy can be a barker, especially when she hears unfamiliar noises or feels uncertain. It's her way of communicating. The good news is she does settle down once she feels safe and comfortable. Because of this, she needs a single-family home where you don't have to worry about noise complaints during the transition.
9.She's fully housetrained
No accidents, no drama. Sassy is fully housetrained and knows the drill. One less thing to worry about.
Sassy is UTD, spayed, HW negative, had a dental cleaning and microchipped. Her new family will need to travel to NC to adopt - no transports. We prefer families in NC, VA, or SC. To get the process started, fill out an application at www.doxiebyproxy.org/application
Sassy isn’t perfect—and that’s exactly what makes her special. She’s quirky, loving, a little stubborn, and completely unforgettable. The right home won’t just adopt her—they’ll celebrate her.

And if you are looking to adopt, but Sissy isn't a fit, we recommend filling out a general application to get approved. We only post a small portion of our dogs publicly and adopt most directly to approved adopters
