Story
Meet Calvin, a 3 year-old standard chocolate longhair piebald that stood in line twice to get ALL the looks! And while Calvin got ALL the good looks, unfortunately he's got plenty of needs too! Before you fall head-over-heels in love with his hazel eyes and curly brown locks of fur…please read on! Calvin is what we call “HIGH MAINTENANCE” in a dog — he has severe allergies that we simply have not been able to completely curb — and his adopter will need to be prepared to continue the battle to keep Calvin’s allergies under control.  The great news is that thru multiple tests and trial and error we can provide the very long and hopefully complete list of all items that are a no-go for Calvin's wellbeing and his people's peace of mind.Calvin’s minimum monthly budget : Apoquel $60-$80 for 2 month supply, Allermyl Shampoo for his weekly medicated baths $31.21 for 4-month supply, Benadryl for when his allergies get intense $10, Calvin’s weekly food budget for his raw diet and goat milk $50…and don't forget his heartworm and flea and tick meds. BUT, the amount of love Calvin gives you back in return? PRICELESS! Calvin was surrendered by an owner that loved him deeply but unfortunately her life took an unexpected shift when she no longer had someone to look after Calvin when she traveled for work as a flight attendant. We can tell you that we rarely see the level of premium care that Calvin had in his prior home — he has been very loved. What Calvin costs his people in the pocketbook, he more than makes up for in the love department. This boy is the definition of a lover boy and you cannot help but just adore his cute curly standard dachshund coat and positive attitude. Calvin does sometimes require muzzling and wearing a cone at the times when his allergies are at peak (like spring) and sometimes to avoid eating things along the way when he goes on walks. Thankfully he does tolerate both pretty well and doesn’t fuss too much when they are required fashion accessories. Speaking of walks — Calvin might walk at a decent pace for about 30 minutes, but he will likely never be a runner or a hiker. He prefers sofa surfing to sidewalk surfing — or long naps on a blanket (no down or feathers, please) in the backyard. His form of exercise is batting his gorgeous eyes at you and trying to get you to give him a belly rub. Calvin does well on car rides, enjoys bar life, and is happy to join you wherever you go in life so long as he can be with you! Calvin gets along okay with other dogs as he is in a foster home with 2 fur siblings — but he is also used to soaking up all the attention and would gladly do that too (and let’s be honest — you might only be able to afford one dog if you adopt Calvin)! Calvin will be a friend that comes with benefits -- in that he is completely housetrained and crate trained (I mean honestly, is he even a dachshund?)...and leash trained too (though we are hoping you read above that the only time he really gets excited for a leash is to go hang out at his favorite bars around town!So if you find that you are an interested adopter with an extra $300 monthly available for his upkeep -- then we know that Calvin is the guy for you! Calvin’s needs really require an adopter that is home more than they are not (bonus points to adopters that work from home or can take Calvin to work with them-- he is currently a well-behaved office dog ). a close eye to keep him from self-harm, and a home that would be invested in continuing the battle of trying to wean Calvin off as much medicine as possible in hopes that one day we can get this sweet boy to the point of never having to use the muzzle and cone to prevent hot spots.  Further bonus points if you love bathing and trimming dogs. Calvin NEEDS and ENJOYS his home baths once a week and fairly regular trims and is wonderfully patient thru both.  Calvin’s adopters need to be within a 3 hour drive of Central NC. He comes with an entire medical history from several specialty vets to help get him started where he lands. ##2041256##

Doc & Marten are an infectious brother duo that will light up your home. Their foster mom describes them as So lovable, Inquisitive and playful.  We think these dudes may be a year & a half old. These boys will play fetch & even retrieve well.  With more practice & continued reinforcement of commands, these boys are eager to learn. Marten knows the sit command but Doc is still working to perfect that skill. However, Doc is better with ball fetch so they just even out in skills department! Doc & Marten are good with small dogs.  We have not seen them in environments with bigger dogs, but with proper introductions & patience, we suspect they would adapt.  As for children - that is another environment we have not tested.  We are quite optimistic kids over the age of 5 would work fine.  Their foster mom regards them as adaptable so we suspect when handled appropriately, most scenarios can work.  As for everyone's first question - potty .. it's a work in progress.  Marten will alert when it's time but Doc has proven to be slower to notify you.  There will for sure be mishaps.  A good schedule & routine will continue to improve the bathroom department. They share everything, from their food to their water to their toys and their bed space.  It's a forever playmate.  Their foster mom has not kenneled them but says they do well contained in a space with a gate.  They may need reinforcement in leash walking.  They arrived to us under the weather so between recovery & this sweltering Carolina heat, walks have not been the priority.  Likely, the two together need practice to be good citizens on a leash but it's doable.  We'd love them to have a fenced yard.  We are open to discussing the right home without one, but please know these guys are young, energetic & need time to play.  And don't forget - there are two of them!  Without a yard, their new family will have to commit to serious daily activity.  Doc & Marten are fully vetted, neutered & vaccinated.  They are fostered in Greensboro so prospective adopters will need to travel there.  Their adoption fee is $350. ##2110656##

Story
UPDATE on Charlie: we were so lucky to secure a place for Charlie with a trainer that has spent the last couple of months working on his manners and good structure! He will soon be debuting his new attitude complete with all of the new things he has learned. We are seeking applicants ready to take Charlie on in their home. He will come with a lesson from his trainer to get him established in his new home -- and his trainer (and foster mom) will only be a phone call away for any questions or when needs arise. Charlie is a GREAT dog and we are so glad we have been able to give him the chance to bloom right where he was planted.  Charlie got the golden ticket into rescue -- and it is a GOOD thing he did, because he needed structure and boundaries to guide him! You see Charlie is a chiweenie (chihuahua/dachshund mix) that landed in the home of a single older woman at the much too young an age of 6 weeks when he was acquired off of Craigslist. From the beginning the cards were stacked against this boy - taken from his mom and litter too soon; landing in the home of a senior that was not able to take him for walks or work with his socialization that he lacked being taken too soon from his family; and being 2 breeds that can get quite sassy if allowed! Charlie is a 10 lb guy with unique coat coloration and a very cute little mohawk. In the right home, Charlie is very little issue 99% of the time (we will get to that 1% of the time in a minute) and is a normal bouncing little puppy that you would never suspect had a bad beginning! Charlie LOVES to play with the other small dogs in his foster home and loves all of the humans in his foster home as well. Charlie is extremely smart and learns very fast - which is both a blessing and a curse (because he often is too smart for his own good). Charlie is mostly housetrained but does need someone that will keep him on a consistent schedule. Speaking of consistency - Charlie needs LOTS of consistency, routine and boundaries. Charlie is great with small dogs, cats and "his" people. Charlie is crate trained and loves to go for walks!  Now that 1% of the time (which can feel like 90% if you are not dog savvy and able to keep Charlie in line) - Charlie does resource guard his bed, sofa and even the big bed from other dogs at times (not always). He will sometimes lunge at other dogs and bite them (even his dog friends) if he is in a guarding mood. In his foster home, Charlie is not allowed on the sofa or big bed for sleeping because he cannot kindly share it with other dogs. Most of the time he understands these rules - sometimes (as puppies do) he tests the rules so he needs some gentle reminders that he cannot share so he belongs on the dog bed instead! Charlie also is TERRIBLE at allowing new people into his home (kind of comes with the territory of resource guarding) and needs some good firm structure around when new people enter the home. He is either crated when new people come over or kept on a leash with firm guidance for new people to ignore him until he calms himself down (which he will do). Charlie is not everyone's cup of tea - we get that he will need a home ready for a quirky pup that has some behavior problems. He is THRIVING in his foster home and starting some obedince training which we know will help him soar! Charlie can, will and has bitten in his previous situation so we will not be allowing him to go to a home with children under the age of 12 years of age. Charlie's new home MUST be extremely dog savvy and ready to have a puppy that tests the limits of pack order. Once given some time to adjust, Charlie really likes most any dog and he actually prefers to be part of a little pack because they boost his confidence. For the smoothest transition it would be best to have a local adopter to Greensboro NC where Charlie is fostered so that training assistance can be provided and a slower introduction can be done to aid in his transition. But other locations are considered for the right fit ready to tackle this adorable boy! Charlie really is a neat little dog - he has the BEST head tilts in all the world and his foster mom said he came equipped with satellite dishes instead of ears on his head! Charlie LOVES toys and his people - he gets so excited when everyone gets home because he knows it equals more attention for him. Charlie is truly what rescue is all about -- saving the ones that have not the best behavior and are in need of better guidance. He is the kind of stone that most of the world would not stop to polish to see it shine -- but shine he is doing in the right hands. Charlie has LOTS of love to give (tons in fact) and we know that the perfect home with a Charlie-sized hole is just waiting to win this golden egg! ##1789418##

Story
WoodrowChiweenie9 (ish) years old12 poundsFostered in RaleighShort list: Sweet, snuggly, protective, housetrained, loves to walk, no kids under 10, needs good introductions for new people coming into the home, no apartments/condos Woodrow has a beef with the current Olympic TV coverage – he’s pissed off that they haven’t covered the most important event in the world - The All-Around Competition for the Worlds Best Chiweenie. And yes, this adorable and loving boy (most of the time), won this prestigious medal. Event #1 Being a Velcro Dog Not only does he get the Gold medal in this event, but he breaks both the olympic and world records. Once he picks his person, this guy is head over heels in love with you. He wants to be as close to you as possible, preferably holding the podium position of in your lap. And yes, if you don’t close the bathroom door all the way, he will nudge the door open and enjoy sit at your feet. You also never have to worry again about being lonely while you take a shower, Woodrow finds a comfy spot on the bathmat and patiently waits for you.  While Woodrow happily sleeps in his crate, he would be thrilled to get to sleep in the big bed if there was a spot. Event #2 The 2 Mile Walk Another gold medal around Woodrows neck for this one! He’s great on a leash and loves to walk (and walk and walk). The more walking Woodrow does, the less energy he has to plot his world takeover. There is currently some debate between Woodrow and his foster dad about whether is plan is a fabulous or terribe idea. Event #3 Protectiveness   He did such an amazing job in this event that the Olympic committee made an unprecendent decisoin and awarded him TWO gold medals in this event. Woodrow is convinced that he owns his foster home – like pays the mortage and his foster family should be grateful that he allows them to live in it. So he protects the house from new people like it’s his job. New people that come into the house and startle him, are likely to be greeted with a nip on the ankle. But with proper introductions, he quickly accepts the new person (with some barking at first, of course) and will even quickly sit on their lap so they can give him much deserved head scratches for being such an amazing boy. Because of his prowress in this important event, he needs a quiet home wihtout a lot of visitors and no kids under 12. Event #4 Playing Woodrow loves to play – he will even bring you a toy and shove it into your hand. His goal is to master tug of war to compete in Los Angelos 2025 and he’s making great progress on his training plan. And when he gets super excited, you get to see him perform another event he excels at – the zoomies. We might be biased, but he wins both style and excution points for the world’s most adorable zoomies. Event #5 Barking It wouldn’t be a chiweenie all-around competition wihout this important event. And while Woodrow excels at barking, he only wins a bronze medal because you can redirect him with verbal cues and squirt bottle. But he’s defintely not a fit for an apartment or condo – unless you want to test out the eviction process or at least piss off your neighbors.   Event #6 Finding the Perfect Spot Woodrow’s spends a good part of his day training for this event. Sometimes it’s burrowning deep in his blankets. Other times it’s the sunshine spot on the floor. But most of time it’s his favorite spot in the sunroom. Event #7 Protecting the World from Evil Vacume Cleaners Woodrow thinks that vacume cleaners are going to take over the world and has made it his personal mission to remove all of them from existence. This event is coming up tonight and he’s been in training for days. As the reining world champion, Vegas has him winning by a landslide.   Woodrow is UTD on shots, heartworm negative neutered, had a dental cleaning, and microchipped. His new family will need to travel to Raleigh to adopt him – no transports. We prefer to adopt to NC, VA, SC and DC area. If you’ve ever wanted your very own Olumpic champion in your life, now is your once in a lifetime chance. To get the process started of bringing Woodrow into your family, fill out an application at www.doxiebyproxy.org/application And he’s agreed to bring all of his medals with him – as long as you promise to build him a trophy case. ##2068045##

Story
Rex Dachshund/Beagle (?) mix 1 to 2 years old 19 pounds Fostered in Raleigh area Short list: Sweet, snuggly, gives the best kisses, loves to play with other dogs, good with all sizes of dogs, good on leash, crate trained, good with a working family schedule, needs work on housetraining, good with kids over 8. We keep telling Rex he should buy a powerball ticket. This handsome (and very lucky) dude owes is life to three employees at WakeGov Pets: Wake County Animal Center. His owner surrendered him and two beagles saying that he found them – but lo and behold – the microchip told the truth with the finder's name as the registered owner. The other two pups from his home were quickly rescued, but the shelter was too much for sweet Rex. He immediately shut down, hid in a corner, and wouldn’t even lift his head. Sadly the shelter was unable to safely vaccinate him. Because they could not give him shots, they legally could not release him into the community and he was put on the euthanasia list. But WCAS wants every dog to walk out the front door to their new life and gives them every chance possible. When amazing kennel techs, Niki and Erika, came to Rex’s kennel to bring him to the euthanasia room, they realized that he was simply terrified. They took extra time and were able to safely vaccinate. They carried him in their arms like a baby to Cindy’s office (the rescue coordinator) and asked if she could help him find a rescue. Cindy, who is also AMAZING, called us and we were at the shelter within the hour. And yes, we cried all the way to our car with him in our arms at just how close he came. Check out the picture in the comments of how we found him cowering in the office. And then watch this video to learn more about the special dude. He’s totally a different dog. And a huge living testament to the wonderful work that happens every day across the nation at shelters. Rex is a pretty amazing boy himself. He loves to snuggle and give kisses. He loves other dogs (big and small) and needs a dog friend in his new home, preferably one to romp and paly with him. He is still working on housetraining, but getting better every day. He’s crate trained, leash trained and does great with his foster mom’s work schedule. Rex is UTD on shots, neutered, heartworm negative and microchipped. His new family will need to come to the Raleigh area to adopt him – no transports. We prefer to adopt to families in NC, VA and SC. To get the adoption process started, fill out an application at www.doxiebyproxy.org/application. We are in love with this sweet boy. He looks at you with his deep brown eyes and tells you how much he loves you right back. Rex is a fabulous dog and we are forever grateful for Wake County Animal Shelter for going the extra miles to get him into our arms. ##2156862##
