Story
Sneezy is one of a litter of seven kittens who were named after the Seven Dwarves. she is very shy and, while curious and always comes over to her foster parents when they come into the room, tends to shy away from being touched, except when she is sleepy, in which case she loves being pet. She will need an adopter who is patient with her and allows her to feel safe on her own terms. She is very playful and loves toys, especially wand-style toys. She is bonded with her sister, Happy, and feels safer when they are together, so they must be adopted together. The total fee for adopting both is $550.  May 20, 2025, 10:40 pm

Spayed or Neutered,
Story
Meet Cauldron, a bewitching cat who will charm the socks off you. He has been in foster care, casting a spell on everyone with his affectionate nature and endless, mesmerizing purrs. Cauldron is amazingly sweet and social, especially when you consider his difficult past in a hoarding situation. He loves everyone and everything: kids, other cats and, most of all, toys! This boy is always looking for pets and, if you are not petting him enough, he will let you know by gently taking your hand and rubbing it on his face. Hint, hint! Cauldron is particular about where he loves to be petted, however. His head, neck and chin are his preferred petting points. By watching his body language, you'll know if you've ventured into unchartered territory and, by the way, he's not a fan of being picked up. He loves to explore, play with new things (everything is a toy to him) and very much wants to be with his people, even if is he playing independently nearby. Cauldon is wonderful, entertaining and social companion and in no time you'll be under his spell! If you're ready to adopt now: Come on in during open adoption hours Tuesday - Saturday 12:30-3:00! For in-shelter pets (not in foster care) You can also: Call us (413-781-4000 x 1) or email us (springfield@dakinhumane.org) for more information about a pet, to adopt sight unseen or to place a 24 hour hold on a pet. We are often on the line with another client, but we return voice mail and emails within 24 hours. All cat adoption fees include; -spay/neuter -rabies vaccine -current distemper vaccines (may need additional boosters with your veterinarian) -FeLV/FIV blood test -microchip implanted & registered to the adopter -treatment of fleas/ticks/ear mites -veterinary exam and health certificate at Dakin -free vet exam within 30 days after adoption with participating veterinarians Most pets have also received other medical care while with us. Your veterinarian may recommend additional health care for your new pet.

Story
Get ready to fall head over heels for Rattle, a wonderfully social and endlessly cheerful boy who has been dazzling his foster family with his sweet personality and non-stop commentary. This guy has opinions and he’s not afraid to share them — his signature quack-meow greeting is guaranteed to make you smile every single time you walk through the door. Rattle is that magical blend of playful, friendly, and unbothered by basically anything life throws at him. He sleeps as hard as he plays, purrs like a tiny motorboat the entire time he’s hanging out with you, and sports an adorable little head-tilt that only adds to his charm. His foster mom says she’s not sure there’s a person or animal he wouldn’t like — he’s just that easygoing. This energetic boy LOVES toys and is a champion at keeping himself busy. Soft toys? Yes please. Ball-in-track toys? Absolutely. Wand toys? His absolute passion! He’s happiest when someone is waving a wand toy for him, and he’ll chase and bounce with total enthusiasm. Even basic drinking straws are a thrill in his world. Since he occasionally plays with his claws out, wand toys are a perfect way to keep the fun safe and super engaging. While he’s not a big cuddler yet, he adores company and thrives when people are around. Rattle has handled everything in foster like a total champ: medical care, quarantine, room changes — nothing slows his good vibes. Even car rides are only mildly annoying to him, and once he’s out of the carrier he’s instantly ready to explore, chat, and make new friends. He hasn’t interacted directly with the other animals in the home, but he’s seen the resident cat through a glass door and reacted with curiosity and confidence. With his adaptable nature, Rattle seems like the kind of cat who can settle happily into all kinds of households. If you’re looking for a bright, talkative, toy-loving companion who’s ready to bring joy, entertainment, and constant purrs into your life, Rattle is your guy. Ready to Adopt? You have two options: #1- VISIT IN PERSON Come during our open adoption hours: Tuesday - Saturday,12:30 - 3:00pm. You’ll be able to meet available cats in the shelter. We are often helping other clients when you call, but we return voicemails and emails within 24 hours. **Holds are not available on Saturdays and during adoption events. -------------------------------------------- All cat adoption fees include; -spay/neuter -rabies vaccine -current distemper vaccines (may need additional boosters with your veterinarian) -FeLV/FIV blood test -microchip implanted & registered to the adopter -treatment of fleas/ticks/ear mites -veterinary exam and health certificate at Dakin -free vet exam within 30 days after adoption with participating veterinarians Most pets have also received other medical care while with us. Story
Hoarder cats are House Spirits - very shy with people. They live in your home, but are rarely seen - visitors will never see them. They are cats who live with you, and who may sometimes grant you the opportunity to touch them. Or, they may not. Here's what to expect with these special cats: These cats WILL: They're great with other cats! They are used to living with many cats, and are excellent companions for other cats. Over time, they will most likely get used to one or two people who will be allowed to touch them. They may choose to hang out near you, or sleep on the bed with you at night. They are a great choice for patient, kind people with a quiet household, who want to make a difference for an individual cat - one that few people have the patience to help. They are a fine choice for situations where you don't have a lot of time to devote to a pet - most of these kitties do not need or want much attention from people. These cats will not: They will not magically turn into normal acting cats; what you see is what they will be like for a long time, maybe always. Some will change more than others, but be prepared for what you see now. They will not be a good choice for busy homes. This cat has specific litterbox needs. When you bring this cat home they will need to be set up in a room by themselves. This cat will go home with a behavior plan that you will need to follow in order for them to use the litterbox reliably. Ready to Adopt? You have two options: #1- VISIT IN PERSON Come during our open adoption hours: Tuesday - Saturday,12:30 - 3:00pm. You’ll be able to meet available cats in the shelter. Spayed or Neutered,
Story
Mackerel came to Dakin when the elderly gentleman she lived with became very ill. Since then she's been parking her paws in foster care, but this gorgeous lady is waiting to make a grand entrance into your home and adding that certain something to your decor! She is shy, calm and pretty quiet, but will meow at times if she wants something. Mackerel likes being able to have her own space, and while she isn't a fan of being petted, she enjoys sitting next to her person. This mature kitty catches her share of z-z-z-z's but still has a playful nature, swatting at wand toys, "hunting" toy mice and enjoying the sweet smell of catnip toys. One of her favorite pastimes is gazing out the window, so she's hoping for a room with a view. This sweet lady would do well in a quiet home with one or two adults who respect her boundaries. Adopting mature cats has perks: no kittens hanging on your drapes or destroying the family heirloom. What you see is what you get when you adopt a mature kitty. Mackerel feels she's enough cat for anybody and would prefer to be your only feline friend. Change is hard for this cat. This cat will be very nervous when you first bring them home. You will need to set up a room with a litter box, food, and water. It will take days for this cat to become comfortable and confident in the new home. This cat will be going home with a behavior plan that will need to be followed in order for everyone to transition successfully. Sassy cats are usually confident, intelligent and active. They often don’t like to be held, or have places on their bodies that they prefer not to be touched. When handled or petted in ways they do not prefer, they are likely to swat, nip or bite. They will be happiest in adult only homes or those with older kids who understand cats that have rules and will leave them alone. If they are bored then they may get into trouble and often need extra playtime in order to be their best selves. Sassy cats will go home with a behavior plan that will need to be followed in order for EVERYONE in the home to be happy. Typically, sassy cats are not for first-time cat owners. Ready to Adopt?
