Story
Meet Velma. This young momma dog and her three puppies were found abandoned on Kelly Mountain in Logan County, WV, discovered by a group of hunters far from any homes. When the hunters stopped, the dogs immediately approached them, friendly and social, leading us to believe Velma likely once had a home and that she and her puppies were intentionally left behind. Thankfully, a Good Samaritan stepped in and took the little family into her home until rescue help could be found. Because of her compassion and quick action, Velma and her pups are now safe and have settled into their local foster homes. Velma has proven to be a sweet, affectionate pup who is great with other dogs and good with kids, and has been fostered with both. She's still young-dog jumpy, so kids out of the toddler stage are probably best, but this is correctable behavior. She’s currently living as an only dog with her foster mom, Norie, soaking up all the attention. Velma recently visited the vet to get up to date on vaccinations and diagnostics and was given a clean bill of health as a young, healthy adolescent pup. Norie shared this update: “The vet visit went well. Velma rides well in the car and was great with the staff, a very good patient. She’s friendly with everyone we’ve met and really enjoys other dogs. She’s housetrained and hasn’t had a single accident in my house. She sleeps peacefully in a crate next to my bed at night. She’s OK on leash but needs more practice. She can get excited and a bit jumpy when she wants to meet another dog. Once she meets them, she does well, though not all dogs want to engage. Velma has some spunk and loves to play and chase balls, but she also knows how to settle down inside.I taught her sit in one day, so she’s very smart. She loves cuddling on the couch. Very affectionate. Can’t get enough of going outside and loves to go for walks." This sweet, more submissive girl will make a wonderful family dog or new pack member. She’s still a young pup who needs to learn her basic commands and fine-tune her leash skills, but her social skills and house manners are already excellent. Apply today! BREED ESTIMATE: Feist/Whippet Mix GENDER: Female APPROXIMATE WEIGHT:  27 lbs APPROXIMATE AGE: ~ 1.5 years old COAT TYPE: Short coat ADOPTION FEE: $425.00 OTHER INFO: utd on shots/will be spayed and microchipped LOCATION: Springfield, Va   FOR MORE INFO OR TO ADOPT: Please go to https://adopt.worthydog.org and complete the application. Story
Approximate Age: 6 years Approximate Weight: 12 lbs MANTIS is a lovely lady. She is much like an older car. She takes a little while to warm up, but once she does, she is easy going, dependable, and ready for a life-long journey. Toys are the gas in her tank...they literally make her smile. ● Very polite and respectful of other dogs and will often climb in bed with a friend at night or for a long nap. Another friendly dog in the home would be a plus to boost her confidence and be a role model. ● Uses training pads faithfully. She is smart and would likely pick up outside potty skills once she settles into her new surroundings. ● No food aggression. She is fed in her crate because there are six other dogs in her current foster home who all dine in their crates. ● Will seek attention and loves to be talked to. Not a fan of cuddling (at the present time). She is happy to rest and relax next to her humans for pets and belly rubs. ● The Universe has so much in store for Mantis. Would you like to be a part of her new life? If so, please complete and submit an adoption survey. Having been part of a hoarding situation with 100 other dogs, almost everything about living in a home with a family is new to Mantis. She is thriving and her happy personality is shining brighter every day in spite of a rough start in life. She is looking for an adopter that will give her much needed compassion, patience, and security. In return she will give you her big heart, friendship, and lots of smiles. ********************************************************************* Schedule a meet-and-greet by completing our Adoption Survey on the Adopt page of our website at https://www.olddominionhumanesociety.org/adoption-survey.
