Story
Beau is a beautiful black and brindle mixed breed, approximately 1 ½ years old, and weighing 61 pounds. We believe him to be mostly a Flat Coated Retriever.
Because Beau came to us as a stray, we don’t know much of his history. We can assume he was kept outside at times because he was found with a collar, with a rusty clasp attached to a portion of torn leash. He was seen wandering around for a few days in an open field near his rescuer’s workplace.
Beau is fully house trained and has not had any accidents. He sleeps well through the night but has not been crate trained. Beau can freely roam within the allowed spaces in the house and usually sleeps on the cool hardwood floors in the living room.
Beau knows how to “sit” and quickly learned “down”. His foster moms are working to improve his fetching of a tennis ball. Beau will fetch, but it’s the giving back of the ball that he doesn’t totally grasp yet.
Although his fosters are often home with him during the day, Beau does fine when left on his own. Beau is young and needs to expend some of his energy, so an active home where he goes for long walks, runs in a yard or dog park, or plays with toys would also be best. Beau has really enjoyed his nightly long walks; these seem to help him expend some post-dinner energy and get him ready for bed.
Beau’s coat is super soft, and he thoroughly enjoys belly rubs. He has been good about being brushed and bathed. With all his luxurious hair, you would think he would shed more, but he actually doesn't. Grooming helps get rid of some of the undercoat and to keep his coat shiny, but shedding has not been an issue.
Beau is curious about the fosters’ cat but has been respectful. He backed off when the cat hissed at him and he does not actively bark or chase after her.
Since Beau was a stray, it is unknown his experience with children. Beau had the opportunity to meet some neighborhood kids on his walks, and he gently and respectfully accepted their petting him. We were told Beau played well with his rescuer's other dogs, and he has had the opportunity to play with a couple of small dogs, but his energy was just too much for them. We believe he could be a good playmate to another dog that could match his energy.
Beau isn’t perfect…he definitely is a “counter surfer” and may have grabbed a bite off the kitchen counter. Beau also thinks everything is his, whether that is your shoe, a towel, a t-shirt you took off and left on the floor, etc. He likes to accumulate things, and sometimes he just gathers, and sometimes he thinks they’re his personal chew toys. It is for this reason that Beau’s nickname has become “Beau Bandito”!
Because Beau was running around as a stray for who knows how long, we are working on decompression after this stressful experience. That means sniff walks and lots of enrichment like lick mats and puzzle feeders. Beau would love a house with a yard.
