Story
Hello there, future paw-rent! My name is Xena, but they also call me "Brandy" at the shelter. You see, I've had a bit of a rough start in life, but I'm ready to find my forever home, and I'm speaking to you directly from my heart.Shelter life can be a bit overwhelming, and it took me some time to adjust. At first, I might seem a bit jumpy when we meet, but don't let that discourage you. I've come a long way since my first day here, and I've got a lot of love to give. One of my absolute favorite things is going for walks. There's something about exploring the world and feeling the wind on my fur that brings me so much joy. While I adore these outings, I do have to admit that I can be a bit dog-aggressive towards my fellow canines. It's just that I need a little time and maybe a few meet-and-greets with someone who's willing to be patient and understanding as I work on my social skills.Trust is a big deal for me, but once I build that bond, I promise I'm a great dog. I'm a big fan of treats, and they're an excellent way to win me over and reward me for my progress.I did have some trust issues with leads when I first arrived, but I've improved a lot. Now, I can get on my lead without any trouble, and I'm ready to embark on adventures with you. When you see me wagging my tail and flashing my sweetest smiles, you'll know that I'm truly opening up and feeling happy.I'm still a little jumpy when it comes to being pet, but I'm determined to overcome this. With your patience and love, I believe we can work through it together. So, if you're willing to invest some time and patience into helping me build trust, I promise I'll be the most loyal and loving companion you could ever ask for. Let's embark on this journey together, one treat at a time. If you're up for the challenge, I'm ready to be your loyal Brandy. Please consider giving me a chance to be your faithful four-legged friend.

Story
We rescued Grizz from an animal shelter in a less-than-desirable area after seeing his picture on their website for nearly three months. He had been listed as needing rescue because of "skin issues." After seeing his regal face for so long, we couldn't imagine why he wasn't scooped up by one of many other rescues, but his animal shelter people were clearly intimidated by him due to his fearful behavior as they tried to leash him and bring him out of his kennel. Once in the vehicle of our volunteer who picked him up, she described him as a "grateful good boy" who "loves a piano concerto." We think Grizz is a dog who hasn't known love in his life, and as a result he sometimes "freezes" when being stroked or handled as if he's worried about what will happen next. He's a good-sized boy, probably around 3 years old.

Story
Oso Jr. (so named because we have two boys named Oso currently) was adopted from us as a small puppy in 2018. He's now 3 years old and was returned by his adopter for attacking a Chihuahua, which passed away as a result of the attack. Oso seems compatible with large female dogs and is sharing kennel space with one presently. On the positive side, Oso is a beautiful Doberman-German Shepherd mix who is housebroken, good off leash, knows many obedience commands, and isn't destructive. During his initial training he did bite his owners when required to obey and resisting doing so; we can assume he is strong-willed and will need an adult owner that will continue to enforce boundaries to keep this smart, protective boy in line.

Story
Smokey was one of three dozen dogs left behind by a Doberman rescuer in upstate California when she passed away. We took on a number of those Dobermans, and though Smokey is not a Doberman, he is such a social and beautiful dog that we couldn't let him end up unadopted in an animal shelter. The rescuer was calling him a Belgian Shepherd, though we're not sure he is a purebred dog. He's about 3 years old as of August, 2023, very friendly, loves to run and would make a great jogging or hiking partner, and good with other dogs. We think anyone who loves the shepherds (Dutch, Belgian, German) will be drawn to this exceptional dog.

Story
We had committed to taking a Dobie girl from a high-volume animal shelter and arranging for a flight to bring her to us when the shelter staff sent a video of Lulu, a Dobie MIX, hoping she could tag along. Her puppish antics and slightly vestibular head tilt were simply impossible to resist, so 6-month-old Lulu made the trip that day that saved her life. She is affectionate, dog-social, amusing, and we think probably a Doberman-Shepherd mix, currently weighing 30 pounds. Lulu is a voracious eater and should reach a healthy weight of 60 pounds or more when full grown.

Alif is a fluffy toasted marshmallow! He walks well on leash and successfully hangs out with other laid-back dogs here at the shelter. He`s looking for a home with a dog-savvy adopter or transfer partner at this time to help him manage some resource guarding in the home. As our longest resident, Alif is a volunteer favorite and would love to find a home with someone who will love him for who he is. Email animal.care@ventura.org for more info!

Zardu already knows several commands, but he`s willing to learn more for treats! He does well in playgroup with big dogs, but can struggle with small dogs. He would do best in a quiet home with few visitors & slow introductions.

Not good with dogs, Needs experienced adopter, House-trained, Spayed or Neutered, Shots are up-to-date,
Story
Here are some of Crystal’s favorite things: playing fetch or tug, chasing squirrels, cheese, getting a belly rub from someone she knows, a frozen Kong treat, riding in a car in a crate, going on hikes. Her nickname is ‘mouse’ because of her big ears, long whiskers and her love of cheese. She is not a dog for everyone, but if you are looking for an engaged, smart, and motivated partner, she is a dog for you. If you are a Malinois person and appreciate their energy, loyalty and careful caution—she has it all. Her other nickname: 0 to 60! The other thing we appreciate about Malinois—intensity—she has that too! Crystal would excel at scent work or any dog sport that is individually based. She’s got the chops to learn and grow and has the potential to evolve with her person in conjunction with the growth of your relationship. She is very sweet and affectionate with those she knows. She came to us via a shelter in Sacramento where she had been found as a stray. The shelter noticed her toy drive (still very much intact!) and that was that. We’ve taken our time in getting to know her and figuring out what she likes (and doesn’t) and, sadly for us, it’s not USAR work that floats her boat. She has the potential to thrive in a job, if she could find the right fit and has the talent for detection work. We think she might like an adult partner (or partners) who understands Malinois, is very active and can provide outlets for her energy and her love of toy play, relationship and learning. She might like a nice yard where she can keep the squirrels out and a place to sit with you after her job is done. She might like a job or a sport, depending on what it is. She would definitely like to hike with you. She would probably like a neighborhood where she can be out and about without a ton of other dogs or people around all the time. The main thing is, if she likes you, she will be an endless source of joy and education as she blooms in your care.
