Story
Glacier came from a severe neglect situation alongside other white shepherds where the world stayed very small for a very long time. The experiences that teach most puppies how to be dogs, meeting people, hearing everyday sounds, exploring new places, learning that strangers bring treats and belly rubs instead of uncertainty, simply did not happen for him during the most important stages of his life.Because of that, Glacier sees the world differently. He is not the dog that will trot into a crowded farmers market wearing a bandana and collecting compliments from strangers. He is not the dog that will immediately climb into your lap on day one and decide you're his new best friend. What Glacier *is* is incredibly gentle, very intelligent, playful once he feels safe, and a dog capable of making huge progress with the right person. We have already watched him begin to blossom. Underneath the fear is a dog who wants to trust. You can see it. He wants to be brave. His little feet just sometimes need extra time to catch up with his heart.Glacier needs a very specific home:❄️ A patient adopter experienced with fearful or undersocialized dogs❄️ A quieter home with minimal chaos and visitors❄️ No young children❄️ A securely fenced yard is required❄️ Another friendly, confident dog would be a huge plus because Glacier looks to other dogs for reassurance and direction❄️ He cannot be trusted off leash, ever❄️ Someone willing to let Glacier move at *Glacier speed* (yes, we went there 😏)His adopter has to understand something important: progress with dogs like Glacier is rarely a straight line. Some days feel like giant leaps. Other days feel like tiny steps. Then suddenly one day you realize the dog who used to hide in the corner is playing in the yard, wagging his tail, and sleeping peacefully beside you.Glacier is not looking for someone who wants a perfect dog. He's looking for someone who understands that some of the most meaningful relationships are built slowly... one tiny brave moment at a time. ❤️To apply, visit EffinghamCountyHumaneSociety.org

Story
This handsome fella is Nick. He's a 2yr old Shepherd-Heeler mix who was an unclaimed stray that we pulled from a shelter to save his life. Nick is full of energy and playfulness. He's in school to learn good manners and commands, and is doing so well! Nick would be a great addition to an active family. Nick is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and currently receiving prevention for flea, tick and heartworm. If you're interested in welcoming Nick into your family, please submit an adoption application via our website, www.effinghamanimalrescue.com.

Story
Frostine & GlacierFrostine and Glacier are 11-month-old white German Shepherd siblings who recently came into our care under heartbreaking circumstances. They are related to Everest and Crystal—two of our other white Shepherds who are currently thriving in foster homes and beginning their journey toward normal, healthy lives. When Frostine (female) and Glacier (male) arrived, it was clear they had experienced significant neglect. They were underweight, frightened, and unfamiliar with even the most basic parts of daily life. Despite everything they’ve endured, their spirits remain gentle. Not once have they shown aggression—only uncertainty and quiet curiosity as they begin to learn that the world can be safe. These two are experiencing many “firsts” right now. Their first walks outside. Their first moments of fresh air. Their first experiences with kind, patient human touch. While they are understandably timid, they are already showing signs of trust—accepting soft pets and taking treats with remarkable gentleness.Frostine and Glacier are not a bonded pair and will need to be placed separately. This is important for their development, as littermates raised together without proper socialization can struggle to build confidence independently. They will need homes that understand their starting point. Patience will be key. So will consistency, structure, and compassion. With the right environment, time, and guidance, we believe both Frostine and Glacier will grow into the loyal, loving companions they were always meant to be.UPDATE: 5/23/26If you were expecting a delicate little snowflake... Frostine would like to file a formal complaint. 😅Frostine has absolutely blossomed during her time with us and has come the furthest out of all of her siblings. The scared little dog she once was has slowly made room for a goofy, gangly, toy-obsessed whirlwind that seems to operate on equal parts happiness and chaos. This girl is READY TO PLAY.Toys? Yes.Other dogs that want to wrestle and zoom around the yard? Absolutely yes.Random bursts of energy where all four legs seem to have different plans? Also yes.Frostine is still learning that the world isn't quite as scary as she once thought. New things can sometimes spook her and remind us of where she came from, but what makes Frostine so special is that she keeps choosing bravery anyway. She bounces back quickly, keeps moving forward, and approaches life with a "let's see what happens!" attitude. She is smart, playful, goofy, and so much fun to watch. She's the kind of dog who can make you laugh without even trying.Frostine does have a few things on her wishlist for her future home:❄️ A securely fenced yard is required❄️ No young children❄️ Playful dog siblings are required because other dogs are her comfort zone and favorite thing in the world❄️ A family that understands she may still need patience with brand new experiences and situationsFrostine spent the beginning of her life missing out on so many things dogs should have experienced. Now she's making up for lost time. And she plans to do it at full speed. ❤️Apply at EffinghamCountyHumaneSociety.org

Meet Crystal ✨Crystal is not the dog who is going to run up to greet strangers and immediately hand out best friend applications.Crystal is the dog who quietly watches from across the room. The dog who notices everything. The dog who studies you first. And then one day, without you even realizing when it happened, you look down and realize she's decided you're "her person".Crystal came from a severe neglect situation where she missed out on many of the experiences that teach puppies that the world is safe. Because of that, new people and unfamiliar situations can still feel overwhelming to her. But if you've been following Crystal's journey, you know something amazing has been happening...She has been making huge strides. The dog who once wanted the world kept at a distance has slowly started discovering that life can actually be pretty fun. She has become playful, silly, and so much more confident. We have watched little pieces of her personality step out from behind the curtain one by one.Crystal absolutely LOVES other dogs and looks to them for confidence and reassurance. She lights up around them in a way that is impossible not to smile at. They help her remember that maybe new things aren't so scary after all.Crystal's dream home would include:✨ A securely fenced yard✨ A quieter home with less chaos✨ No young children-they're too loud and unpredictable✨ Playful, confident dog siblings are required✨ Someone patient who understands that trust isn't built overnightShe needs someone who understands that the best things sometimes take time.Because for the person willing to wait, Crystal isn't a challenge to overcome. She's a story unfolding. ❤️Apply to adopt at EffinghamCountyHumaneSociety.orgHer adoption fee is $200 and this includes her spay, heartworm tested negative, vaccines, and a microchip that we register for you.
