Story
Tucker is a spunky, playful, big-hearted dog who loves everyone and everything except cats! He is gentle and affectionate, seems relatively quiet, and up for any adventure. Tucker's owners unfortunately need to return him as the woman went into assisted living due to an illness and the man spends all of his time there and feels it isn't fair to Tucker. From his owner: Tucker is a great guy. He loves people and has no problems with strangers. He barks fiercely when strangers come to the door, but is welcoming when I let them in. He is very affectionate and loves having his back and his tummy rubbed. He is not a problem licker. I accidently stepped on his paw one time (not badly) and he yelped, but did not snap at me. Instead, he limped around until I gave him a treat and told him I was sorry. I do not know how he is with small children, but the only problem is that he is rambunctious and might knock them down. He is great with other dogs, but with his energetic way of playing might hurt small dogs. He would never do so intentionally. I have taught him sit, stay and come by giving a small treat as a reward. When I feed him, he will sit and impatiently wait as long as I hold up my index finger. When I point at the food, he scarfs is down. He is food motivated. He thinks squirrels are plotting against us and will go after them given an opportunity. He absolutely loves his toys, especially plush ones, but is really not destructive of them. The only ones destroyed were from tug-of-war with other dogs. He loves it when you throw them for him. He is high energy and loves walks and running in the yard. The yard must be fenced because if he has an opportunity he will take off to explore. I have not been able to train him yet to come under that situation and he must be tracked down. That is his only real flaw. He just needs more training. He is a counter surfer, but I have had a dog who was before and just make sure not to leave temptation out when we are gone. He sleeps in a crate in our bedroom at night, door latched. He does hate being left in the crate while we are gone and yelps when we leave, but we let him roam free in the house for hours with no problem. Except for used Kleenexes, for which he has a fetish. Why, you might well ask, would I not be keeping such a warm, affectionate, fun-loving dog? Only, and I mean only, because my wife has Parkinson's that has recently gotten very worse and she went into a facility. I am with here every day from early morning until late at night. Tucker is home alone and starved for companionship. If you cannot give him attention, you are not a good fit. If you can, you cannot find a better guy than Tucker. I have had him about 4 months and it breaks my heart that I cannot keep him any more. He is really has become a part of the family. He needs a loving home again. If you are interested in meeting Tucker, please fill out an application at www.tahoewarf.org and text 775-338-6631 or 775-846-3773.February 9, 2026, 3:19 pm

Story
Here is Declan! He has been in our care for over three years, being pulled from a kill shelter on his last day by a WARF volunteer. On arrival at our sanctuary, we discovered that Declan's left eye was completely ruptured and had to be removed due to either bullet or blunt force trauma. We also discovered that he was likely a former guard dog that had been badly trained, resulting in misplaced aggression towards people and animals. Declan started out with only one friend in the world and was aggressive towards everyone, but he is now confident enough to be able to be introduced to new people by his trusted handlers in a slow, controlled environment. In the three years that Declan has been with WARF, he has made slow but steady progress, and we now feel that he is ready to find his special person. He would be an ideal dog for a single woman, as his protective nature really comes through once he has bonded with someone. He would prefer an indoor-outdoor environment, as he likes to roam the perimeter, making sure everything is safe, but needs to be securely contained as he is a big, strong boy and can't be in an environment where he could encounter a person or animal he does not know. Declan has learned to walk nicely alongside other dogs but does not want to share his life, or his people, with other animals. If you are interested in learning more about this incredibly resilient dog, please call/text 775-338-6631. An adoption process for Declan would require a calm but confident person who is willing to commit to multiple get-acquainted visits and a home check, as we want to be sure that he never has to go through abandonment and trauma again.February 2, 2025, 3:22 pm

Story
*** COURTESY LISTING *** PLEASE CALL OR E-MAIL THE PERSON LISTED. DO NOT CONTACT WARF AS WE HAVE NO FURTHER INFO. Meet Griff, an approximately 5y.o. neutered German Shepherd-Pit mix up to date on vaccines who is looking for a home. Unfortunately we have seen a lot of unexpected changes in our lives recently surrounding work and a serious injury with surgeries looming, and it's become difficult to give him his best life. He's happy and healthy, gets exercise and walks and visits with friends, cuddles on the sofa, and his needs are met- but we just can't give him the 100% we were able to before our lives changed. Griff had been abandoned overnight at a construction site in 2021 where the owner was working. Someone left him tied up in freezing temperatures with a bark collar on, unneutered and unchipped at the time. Police and Animal Control never found the culprits. He is a sweet, energetic, loyal, alert, and very intelligent dog who loves his human and canine friends. He loves to go on hikes, backpacking, trail runs, follow you on a bike, chase a ball, perform his many tricks, and is eager to learn and train. He's great at home and snoozes on the couch when we're gone, and is crate trained and great on leash. That said, he's a complicated dog. Not long after we took him in we started to see significant behavioral quirks. Whatever past trauma or lack of socialization he had likely led to his reactivity with new people and new dogs. Griff had a lot of success working with a great dog trainer and has gained confidence and a sense of safety out in the world since then. Nonetheless he struggles to meet new dogs and new people in the way that most dogs do. With a structured routine he is able to safely meet others and welcome them into his life and be friends, and he's loved living with other dogs we've fostered. What he can't safely do is suddenly meet other dogs while he or they are off leash, and strangers can't come right up to him and pet him; he needs to feel safe and calm before engaging. There have never been any serious altercations but we are diligent to avoid any situation that could lead to trouble. We are hoping to find someone looking for a new canine companion who can provide a structured, engaging life for this handsome dog. With these things in mind, this new family should be reactive-dog savvy and live an active lifestyle. We don't think he's a great fit for a home with children or cats. If you happen to know of anyone who might be a good fit for Griff please reach out- he is in Tahoe and are owners are willing to travel with him for the right situation. Story
Finn is a 1-year-old shepherd mix who looks like a mini German Shepherd, weighing about 40lbs of pure energy and personality. If you've ever wanted a dog who lives life at full speed, Finn is your guy. He is extremely playful and gets the zoomies at the drop of a hat&#194&#151seriously, blink and you might miss him flying past. Finn can jump impressively high (think springs for legs), so he'll thrive in a home that enjoys active play, training, and keeping both his body and brain busy. Finn also has a naturally protective streak and is very aware of his surroundings, making him a loyal companion who takes his job of watching over his people seriously. With the right guidance and structure, that protectiveness can shine as confidence and devotion. Finn is dog selective and would do best with slow, thoughtful introductions to other dogs. He is not a fan of cats, so a cat-free home is a must. This smart, athletic boy would be happiest with an adopter who understands shepherd-type dogs and is ready to channel his energy into positive outlets like training, games, and adventures. In return, Finn will give you endless laughs, fierce loyalty, and a front-row seat to the best zoomies show in town. If you're looking for a fun, fast, and devoted best friend, Finn is ready to leap (literally) into your life. If you are interested in meeting Finn, please fill out an application at www.tahoewarf.org and text 775-338-6631 or 775-846-3773.January 13, 2026, 7:07 pm
