Story
Adira was found running at large in Memphis and was subsequently brought to a veterinary clinic by a kind MPD Officer. She was severely emaciated and scared. “Addie” as she has come to be known, quickly made herself at home at her Foster’s farm while she gained weight and recuperated. She is now around 65 pounds and estimated to be 2-3 years old. Addie loves to play ball, go on long walks through the woods, run, ride in cars, and snuggle. She is wonderful for baths, tolerates nail trims, and more than anything, just wants to be anywhere her human is. Although she is high energy when the opportunity presents itself, Addie would make a suitable apartment dog for someone who works from home. Her foster family works from home and she spends the entire workday snuggled on her bed beside her foster mom while she works. Addie is kennel trained, but she is a large dog and would not be suited for kenneling all day while family or individual works. Addie will do best with an active lifestyle and plenty of time for play. She does need to be the only dog as she is an alpha female and does not share her humans or her territory. Addie is deeply loyal and very protective. She is friendly to new people if her person is friendly to them. Once adopted she will travel via private transport Rescue Vet (transport cost is $160.00) to a location closest to you. Story
Ava came to us a 9 week old puppy suffering from Megaesophagus secondary to PRAA. This is a condition in which the esophagus will not move the food down her throat as it should. Ava has surgery to correct her PRAA and it did lessen the severity of her Mega Esophagus but didnt totally correct it. Ava must eat her food after its been soaked and blended in a blender and she needs to eat out of an elevated feeder. She drinks water normally. Ava does have allergies that are controlled with a daily medication.. Ava loves other dogs and cats and children however she's incredibly bossy and rather possessive over things and will growl and snarl at other animals that come near her toy or bone she's chewing. Most of the animals in her foster home ignore her and walk away.. She is potty trained and crate trained. She needs a family that will be diligent on ensuring that no small objects are left where she can get them because they can pose choking hazards for her with her mega E. Please take a few minutes to read up on Megaesophagus to see what it is and what care is required for a dog with the condiotion if you feel you are interested in Ava.

Story
Maxfield was rescued from a high-kill shelter in Texas on a whim from an SSR volunteer. He was at risk of euthanasia so she brought him home instead. He spent two years living with his foster in Texas, and she treated him like one of her own dogs. Eventually she decided it was time for him to find his forever family and head north to Virginia.  Maxfield has shown signs of dog reactivity so he is currently with our training partner, Sadie's Rules, in Nellysford, VA. Max has had some unfortunate encounters with dogs in the past and has even been attacked previously. Poor Max was even bit while out on a leashed neighborhood walk with his foster in TX prior to coming to VA. A stray came upon them and she was unable to safely remove Max before that stray attacked. This old guy has suffered a lot of trauma in his TX life and we promised him a brighter future here up North! Are you the bright spot in his life? Max prefers to be the center of your world and would do better as the only dog in your home. He does not like when other dogs get in his personal space because of what he has experienced  (and who can blame him?) but he can coexist with other dogs. As a protective measure, when Max is out on the trail at training with numerous other dogs, he often wears a basket muzzle. He needs to know his new owner has his back and will protect him and not put him in dangerous situations. Max was already treated for heartworm disease and is negative. He is allergic to chicken and does really well on the raw diet he is on. His previous foster can share information regarding the holistic protocol and supplements she found successful in keeping him healthy. The finishing touches of his training program are wrapping up and Max is actively looking for his forever home! The  15/10 Foundation  has launched an initiative to encourage the adoptions of German Shepherds and German Shepherd mixes over the age of 5 years. Maxfield has been nominated and approved for adoption fee sponsorship. Story
Peaches was adopted and had a life as a family member, but sadly was returned after 6 years. We are all sad for her and hoping her forever home will love her for the good girl she can be. Sweet Peaches is affectionate, loves to chill on the couch, enjoys a good car ride, a long walk, and playing with her toys. Peaches adores all sized people, although the littles may not stay upright around 'miss big love'. She is spayed, housebroken, and knows all the basic commands. This girl listens well, she completed her training at Creature Comfort Inn and is currently being fostered by a trainer. She is a strong girl that will need a strong leader, continued structure will be best to keep everyone happiest. Peaches is a beautiful tall German Shepherd, weighting 85 pounds. She prefers to be the only animal in the house and does have a strong prey drive, so small critters wouldn't fair well around this queen. Peaches has EPI (Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency), which means her pancreas doesn't produce enough enzymes to break down the food properly. This is not too costly and easy to manage. Enzyme powder is added to her food at each meal and she needs a B12 supplement. So please don't let EPI scare you! Peaches is a healthy senior girl, looking for her happily-ever-after! Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.  If you are an approved adopter and are interested in this dog, please let your case worker know. Story
Thor was rescued from a high kill shelter in Texas. Thor is an older gentleman that is used to getting what he wants and he needs continued structure and a strong leader present in his daily life to continue living out his Golden Years happily. Thor has lived in a foster home with other German Shepherds and settled in nicely with them after proper introductions. He seeks out affection and will approach you for petting, but be prepared because he will not want you to stop!  He has excellent house manners and he thoroughly enjoys his walks outside. He is also content relaxing on his orthopedic bed playing with his squeaky toys. Unfortunately, with Thor's unknown past and vetting history, his body is that of an old man. He was not able to tell his foster mom that his slower movements were more than just the typical senior daily aches and his oral medication was not bringing him much relief. Sadly, Thor started to react negatively towards his foster siblings (also rescues and seniors themselves) and was causing them additional stress, too. He then started to exhibit signs of resource guarding towards the foster and they were not equipped to handle his behavioral challenges. Thankfully, SSR has a partnership with an amazing trainer who accepted Thor into her program so he could become the perfect gentleman he was truly meant to be! Alas, if it were only that easy. Once Thor arrived at training, it became obvious with the professional training assessment that something medically was causing Thor to behave in this manner. This poor old guy was in a a lot of pain!! He was sore. He was grumpy. He was acting out.  Thor now receives Librela injections at the vet which has helped tremendously with his joint pain. Prior to those, it was difficult for him to just move around. He is also on joint supplements and oral medication to assist with additional pain. Thor is looking for a very special forever retirement home. No stairs for Thor- single story living is best for him. Also, no small children for Thor. He is HUGE and will use all 100 pounds and that large head of his and easily push little kids over. Thor is currently being fostered by our trainer in Nellysford, VA. Although he is no longer officially part of her training program (his old body cannot handle the daily rigors of training), he enjoys living in her home and getting out on the trail.  He is scheduled to be neutered and is currently on the slow-kill method for heartworm disease treatment. If he is adopted prior to the completion of treatment, SSR continues to pay for that. He currently eats Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach 7 + Salmon & Rice. Thor rides well in a car and was trained properly on using a ramp to make getting in and out of vehicles easy.  The  15/10 Foundation  has launched an initiative to encourage the adoptions of German Shepherds and German Shepherd mixes over the age of 5 years. Thor has been nominated and approved for adoption fee sponsorship. Story
Jack was rescued from south Texas and adopted in April 2020. He was later returned to SSR when the original adopter rehomed him to a family unfamiliar with the German Shepherd breed, not understanding his needs. Jack has been a wonderful and happy healthy boy! He loves all humans, big and small. He's a goofy, playful, obedient good guy. This affectionate fella is up to date on shots, heartworm negative, neutered, and housebroken. Such a big snuggle couch buddy! He can coexist with other dogs, but he is picky about who he lets in his inner circle. So slow introductions with resident dog(s) will need to happen before Jack can be adopted. Cats are a nope. After all, we want to make sure his next home is his forever home! If you have room in your home and heart to give this guy the love he deserves ,please apply today to adopt him.  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.  If you are an approved adopter and are interested in this dog, please let your case worker know. Story
Nesta was rescued from a high kill shelter in TX.  She has made it to VA! Upon arrival, she was very scared and did not want to get out of her crate. We don't know what she has been through, but it is plain to see she has not had a great life. Nesta has now started living the good life with her foster.  It took Nesta a while to start trusting.  Now that she has started to settle in at her foster home, she knows she is safe. Nesta has become a Velcro dog and follows her fomom everywhere. She is always asking for pets and butt scratches. This young lady is friendly but definitely needs to work on her manners   She gets along with dogs but hasn't quite figured out how to play.  A home with a fur sibling will help her to learn.  Nesta does great around small children but because of her jumping and zoomies, a home with older children is recommended.  She has not been cat tested as yet.  Nesta is up to date on vaccinations, has been spayed and is heart worm negative.    UPDATE: &#226&#128&#139Nesta started her professional training at Sadie's Rules K9 Training on 2/2024 to further develop the confidence she needs to be the best version of herself. She is doing very well there and is learning even the basic commands from scratch. She is a high energy and high drive dog but enjoys simple things and an "ordinary" dog life. Nesta is not super-outgoing. She manages just fine on occasional outings but prefers to be a homebody and does not like to go outside at night. She likes being around other dogs and is still learning proper cues from other dogs as she was not socialized prior to coming into rescue.  At this point, we will say no cats because of her drive but she has not been officially tested. Stay tuned as we learn more about her!Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.  If you are an approved adopter and are interested in this dog, please let your case worker know. Story
Nonie was found as a TX stray with her litter of 7 puppies.  All of her puppies have been adopted.  Nonie is still searching high and low for her forever home.  She has been with her VA foster family since May 2023.  Nonie is wondering why no one wants her.....  This sweet, gentle gal is 2-3 years old, around 65 lbs, and has the best smile ever! She is pretty close to perfect! Seriously. If you want a low-maintenance best friend, this girl is for you. Nonie is crate-trained, potty-trained, spayed, healthy, and heartworm negative! She aims to please and is easily corrected. Nonie is kid-friendly, but maybe more suitable for older children to ensure she does not knock down any little ones!  She is NOT cat-friendly and does not care for small dogs.  Nonie loves playing with her dog friends, going for  walks, water activities, watching (chasing) squirrels, and snuggling with her humans. She is very food-motivated and takes treats very gently. She would be perfectly fine as an only dog or in a home with another pup or two. Nonie is very patient and playful with the 1-year-old resident puppy, and they really enjoy wrestling and chasing each other.  All Nonie needs to be happy is a full belly, a soft bed/couch, a few walks per day, and lots of snuggles. She enjoys being outside and would love a yard, but it's not required. She does struggle with a fear of thunderstorms, can be reactive on the leash, and she is  a sloppy drinker. Hey, no one is perfect. Nonie says: 'Please take a chance on me!!'
