Story
Meet DIXIE! 🐾 This adorable girl is just the perfect package!! Dixie found herself, through no fault of her own, in a rural shelter that keep most of their pups outside under tarps and with hay in the winter. One look at that face and we scooped her right up. We were shocked to find out how sweet, loving and gentle this adorable doll was. This amazing girl just loves life and hanging out with her people and dog buddies. She is the first to welcome you home and last to leave your side. She has the perfect energy one is looking for in a dog. Dixie is approximately 5 months and practically out of all those time consuming puppy stages. 💖 Personality: Goofy, playful and energetic. Dixie has a wonderful temperament and gets along great with her foster mates. She is super smart and a fast learner. She will be up for learning any new tricks you might want to throw her way. She is fostering in a home in Memphis, TN and her foster mom would love to tell you all about her. Dixie is going to be great family companion and she is ready to be your new best friend! If you’re ready to give DIXIE a lifetime of belly rubs, treats, and a cozy bed, please reach out! Let’s find this sweet pup the forever home she soooo deserves. 🐶💕 Once adopted she will travel via the Rescue Transport to her new family. They travel each and every weekend from Memphis, Tennessee to the north east, delivering pups along the way as far north as West Greenwich, Rhode Island. Transport is an additional $185. If you would like to make this cutie part of your family please follow the link below to our adoption application. Our turnaround time is typically less than 24 hours so please be prepared before you submit your application. https://forms.gle/APKvbgFJcaRvgKgk9

Story
Ava came to us a 9 week old puppy suffering from Megaesophagus secondary to PRAA. This is a condition in which the esophagus will not move the food down her throat as it should. Ava has surgery to correct her PRAA and it did lessen the severity of her Mega Esophagus but didnt totally correct it. Ava must eat her food after its been soaked and blended in a blender and she needs to eat out of an elevated feeder. She drinks water normally. Ava does have allergies that are controlled with a daily medication.. Ava loves other dogs and cats and children however she's incredibly bossy and rather possessive over things and will growl and snarl at other animals that come near her toy or bone she's chewing. Most of the animals in her foster home ignore her and walk away.. She is potty trained and crate trained. She needs a family that will be diligent on ensuring that no small objects are left where she can get them because they can pose choking hazards for her with her mega E. Please take a few minutes to read up on Megaesophagus to see what it is and what care is required for a dog with the condiotion if you feel you are interested in Ava.

Good with dogs,
Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. [10/26/24]  I've had Maria for 5.5 months now.  She's come a very long way.  Her skin issues have cleared up (she's now on a daily dose of Apoquel to ensure her skin remains healthy).  Maria was spayed on 10/1/24.  If you had read the 6/20/24 update below, we planned to have her spayed in June.  But she went into heat and best practices indicate that females should not be spayed for about 3-4 months after a heat cycle ends.  The vets want to make sure that hormones have calmed down enough to do the spay.  So we waited until October. She was a trooper throughout recuperation - even with the cone (NOT her favorite).  The incision healed nicely.  It was a bit longer than most spay incisions because the  vet also repaired an umbilical hernia during the procedure.  I thought Maria was happy before the spay, but after that cone came off and I no longer had to use a leash, she was ecstatic!  I'm guessing since the hernia was repaired, she felt a whole lot better.  Maria has learned to sit and wait for her bowl to be placed down.  We've been working on leash training, but she hasn't got the hang of that yet.  Since the spay, there are times where she doesn't pull on lead (the leash goes soft), but then she pulls again.  Her forever home will likely want to work with her on that.  She is crate trained - she goes in the crate at night and whenever I leave my house.  She also hasn't had an accident in the house for over 5 months, so I think it's safe to say that she's house trained as well.  :) She does have a high prey drive, so we're thinking a forever home with no small animals.  It might also be best if there were no small children in the home.  She is essentially an 86 lb puppy - bouncy, fast, zoomies, etc.  She's leaarning spatial boundaries and I'm sure she will continue to improve.  One additional observation is that her coat seems to be getting lighter.  I had her DNA tested and she came back 100% White Shepherd.  It'll be interesting to see how light her coat might get.  Oh, and I'll be happy to include those results with the  documentation we send with Maria.  Maria is definitely ready for her forever home.  If you might be interested in this special girl, please do apply to adopt.  If you are already approved to adopt, please contact us.  [6/20/24] Maria went to the vet yesterday and was a little nervous but was great with both the vet tech and the vet. Her skin issues are better, but haven't quite cleared up yet so she'll be on an antibiotic a while longer. The vet also gave me a mousse to rub into her skin. I'll start that today. Her spay is scheduled for July 2. At that time, the vet will also repair what appears to be an umbilical hernia. Big doin's coming up for this sweet girl. She'd also gained 4-5 lbs. This is great and the vet was okay about the food amount and the frequency of the feedings (3 times/day). Today, I started a new 'thing' with her. She knows 'sit' and I decided to ask her to sit before I open a door. We've been through two doors so far and after a few seconds she managed it both times. She's coming along nicely. And she's just got the best smile. :)  [6/18/2024]  I've had Maria for about 6.5 weeks and am getting to know her.   She'll go to the vet tomorrow for a recheck. She seems to have gained a little weight. Her body is looking softer and her face is filling in. I'm now wondering how long it will take for her to catch up to those wonderful ears of hers. Right now, I'm thinking no small children and no small animals. She's has a small frame, but is very strong and very much like a big puppy. She bumps and rubs up against me and could easily knock a small child down. She's chased both bunnies and squirrels in the yard. I don't know about cats, but I'm guessing she would be VERY interested. I'm also thinking that an active family would be great for her. She's so delighted and excited with the world now. She just bounces with her energy. Once she learns to relax on leash, she will do great on walks (I'm working on this). She's very smart and catches on fairly quickly. She now 'sits' (without being asked) for her meal AND 'waits' for me to tell her 'okay.' This means she's not diving for her dish anymore. We're also working on 'wait.' Like with the meals, I've started putting a treat on the floor and asking her to 'wait' until I say 'okay.' Stay tuned for more updates on this special girl. Story
Beau has been with us since he was an 8 week old puppy and is now 6 years old. He is very smart and very good with kids. He has grown up with 6 young children and is gentle with them. He walks well on a leash, loves to fetch tennis balls, and will come when called. He knows commands such as “sit”, “down”, and “shake”. Beau needs a home where he will get plenty of attention and exercise. He does not like other animals especially cats. He has lived with another dog and they get along and play great together. However, he does not like other dogs that he doesn’t know. I think that he could get along with another dog but it would take some time. We are rehoming him because one of our children has developed allergies to him so he cannot be in the house anymore.

https://foha.org/pet/lambert2021/ Hi! I'm Lambert. If you like big mutts, then I'm your guy! You can't deny, bigger dog = bigger heart! That means I have a lot of love to give. One look into my eyes and you'll realize - it's go big or go home! When I'm out for a walk I'll want to be right by your side! I walk nicely and love exploring. Even though I think I'm already pretty special, I'm ready to learn how to be the perfect dog (especially if there are treats involved)! I've gotten along with other dogs here at FOHA that match my calm demeanor. I'm learning more and more everyday and I can't wait to have even more new experiences with a family of my own! I am easily startled when sleeping so be sure to approach me gently. Due to my size, strength and energy level, I would do best in a home with no small children and an experienced owner. Submit an application to meet me and I'll show you that a big guy means big love! Check out all of the dogs available at Friends of Homeless Animals! https://foha.org/pet-adoption/find-a-dog/

https://foha.org/pet/marble2024/ Hi, I’m Marble! 💕 I’m a cuddle queen on the hunt for my forever family. As a sweet German Shepherd, I’m all about snuggles—there’s nothing better than cozying up next to you on the couch for hours. When the wind picks up, you’ll find me outside chasing leaves like it’s my favorite game (because it totally is!). I’m housebroken, love my daily walks, and have mastered the art of being a laid-back, loyal companion. My dream home is simple yet full of love. I imagine being with people who cherish me, taking lovely walks together, and having a cozy couch where I can snuggle up and feel safe. 🏡🐾 I’d do best in an adult-only home with folks who have experience with German Shepherds—I’m looking for someone who understands my breed and can give me the love and structure I thrive on. Right now, I’m waiting for my forever couch (and family) to snuggle with. Could that be you? If you’re looking for a fun-loving yet laid-back companion to brighten your days, I’m your girl! Let’s meet soon. 💕

MAX would make the most amazing ESA for a children's hospital or a senior living home! MEET MAX THE PERFECT ONE! He is a 6-year-old Dutch Shepard mix with beautiful bright dreamy eyes who thinks he’s human and loves everyone that he meets. His sister and her puppies were pulled from the shelter, and he was left behind for two years and became the house pet of the shelter, and everyone adored him, but it is time for him to find a new home. He has a gentle and kind soul. Spent time with a 87 year old mother and was very calm and respectful. He doesn’t need another doggy to be happy but acclimates if there was another doggy. He doesn’t need an active family just a family that wants a doggy to love. He thinks he’s 10 lbs. but weighs 60 lbs. He extremely friendly to other dogs and loves children. He walks perfect on a leash and loves to talk long walks and does not pull responds well to directions. His foster family loves him dearly and would love the opportunity to share more stories about MAX! Once adopted she will travel via private transport Rescue Vet (transport cost is $160.00) to a location closest to you.
