Story
Hi, Im Nala—sunshine in dog form and part-time zoomies expert. I did not get the kind of start I deserved (my sister Lucy and I were left behind), but I decided pretty quickly that I was not going to let that define me. These days, I am a happy, playful girl who loves other dogs, adores people, and treats every open space like my personal racetrack. If there is fresh air, room to run, and someone to share it with, I am already living my best life. I bring the energy, the fun, and the kind of joy that makes ordinary days feel a lot more exciting. I am currently in the Middle East with my freedom flight ready—I just need my person or foster to say go. So tell me… are you ready for a best friend who turns every day into a good day? 🐾

Story
Hi, Im Lucy—professional sunshine spreader and part-time zoomies champion. I did not get the kind of start I deserved (my sister Nala and I were left behind), but I decided pretty quickly that I was not going to let that dim my sparkle. These days, I am a happy, playful girl who loves other dogs, adores people, and treats every patch of grass like my personal playground. If there is room to run, I am already halfway there. I am all about good vibes, outdoor adventures, and being part of whatever fun is happening. Life is just better when I am included, and I promise to bring the energy and the smiles. I am currently in the Middle East, but I have my freedom ride ready—I just need my person or foster to say go. So tell me… are you ready to add a little extra joy (and a lot of tail wags) to your life? 🐾

Story
Lola is a beautiful 2-year-old German Shepherd mix with a heart as big as her playful spirit. This sweet girl has quite the story—she spent over a month as a stray in her neighborhood, where she quickly won over everyone, especially the local kids. She would happily walk them to and from the bus stop, soaking up all the love, playtime, and snacks they had to offer. It’s clear from the start: Lola adores people, especially children. Lola is the perfect mix of fun and well-mannered. She loves toys (especially balls!) and will happily play fetch and retrieve to her heart’s content. She also enjoys playing with other dogs and would do great in a home with a canine companion. She’s both house-trained and kennel-trained, and can relax comfortably in a crate for extended periods without issue. Lola travels well in the car (especially in her crate) and is always up for an adventure—she truly loves going for rides. Lola is smart and eager to please, showing all the classic German Shepherd traits. She knows her name, responds well to training, and even does well off-leash in appropriate settings like trails. She’s not destructive and doesn’t chew on household items—she’d much rather enjoy a Milk-Bone or a good game of fetch. While Lola is generally well-behaved in the home, she can be a bit vocal when excited, especially when greeting people or when someone comes to the door. This is typical of her breed and manageable with continued guidance and training. Once she settles, she’s affectionate, attentive, and loves being close to her people. She has shown that she can coexist with cats and is overall a very adaptable, social dog. Lola has even waded into a pond before—so she might enjoy some water fun—but baths are definitely not her favorite activity! Lola is spayed, up to date on vaccines, and on prevention, ready to find her forever home. Ideal Home:
Lola would thrive in an active home where she can get plenty of playtime, exercise, and attention. A family with kids, another playful dog, or someone who enjoys outdoor adventures would be a great match for her. If you’re looking for a loyal, loving, and playful companion who will stick by your side and keep you smiling, Lola just might be your girl. If this sounds like the pup for you, please complete an application at https://www.saveastray.org/forms/form?formid=3635 Once the application is approved, a FaceTime will be set up for a virtual meet and greet. You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Please contact Tammy (tnhuck@yahoo.com) for more information about this pet.Update 13 September 2024 Pancake 6757 is a 4 year old sweetheart who has been in the rescue for quite some time. She came to us very sick and emaciated. Pancake had EPI which had been left untreated. She requires enzymes for her EPI. Her foster family has her looking beautiful! She’s healthy and is a petite girl even filled out! Pancake is a higher energy gal who would love a fenced-in yard and an energetic canine playmate.  Seniors and small children would not be a great fit for her.  She plays almost constantly during doggie play dates.  Pancake is weighing in around 55lbs, which the vet said is a good weight for her.  She does well at the vet, she is getting better with leash walking but still pulls (and she is very strong), and she does not like thunderstorms.  She is a really sweet dog who would love to finally find her forever family! Please consider Pancake! Approved adopters may contact her foster parent at tnhuck@yahoo.com Update 10 June 2024 Pancake is up to a whopping 45 pounds!  Fortunately, she is food-motivated so she is making really good progress.  The vet suggested that she gain about another 10 pounds. Her sparkling personality is also shining through even more.  She loves to play fetch with tennis balls, chew on Nylabones, and play with furry squeaky toys, which she also enjoys shredding.  And that’s okay, she is a happy young lady who can entertain herself, given the right toys.  She does love interaction with human beings and she will come over for attention and follow a person around the home.  And she is a good guard dog with a loud, authoritative bark! To burn off some of her energy, I have taken Pancake for short (1-2 mile) runs around a local park.  She gets distracted easily so it is a bit of a challenge, but she does enjoy the extra time outside and she is noticeably more poopered out at the end of the day.  Her leash manners are improving but they still need some work.  Sometimes she walks with neighbors and their dogs, so she is learning socialization skills. Pancake has attended two adoption events and done reasonably well.  She is a little anxious in new situations but she should get better about that as her confidence grows. 4/4/24. Pancake is a really sweet 3.5 year old white shepherd.   The best part about Pancake is her personality.  She is affectionate, house-trained and crate-trained.  She is well-socialized with people and she generally ignores or tolerates other dogs.  Her foster sister Pawlina 6087 is the same way, so they usually hang out in different parts of the living room.  Pancake enjoys being outside and going for walks; the world is her oyster!  Her leash manners could use some work – she is stronger than she looks and she likes to sniff pretty much everything. Unfortunately, Pancake has exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, or EPI.  This means that she has to be on a restricted diet and have enzymes on her food.  The condition is easily managed but it makes her upkeep a little more expensive and time-consuming, as the enzymes need to be added to her food with warm water, and then the mixture needs to sit for at least 20 minutes before serving. We are working to get Pancake’s weight back up to normal and to figure out what diet will work for her, as well as her enzyme dose.  She had a vet appointment in March and she did great.  Her blood test came back negative for heartworms, and her fecal sample was negative for parasites.  She also had her nails trimmed.  She came into rescue with some sores on her legs; they are healing nicely and the vet removed the blue tape on them that can be seen in some of the photos.  Her right ear doesn’t stand up straight, and the vet said perhaps she had a hematoma in her younger years, but it adds to her charm.  Pancake behaved perfectly the entire time at her doctor’s appointment, she had no problem being handled by the vet and the techs. Pancake is currently living in a condo and she is not a barker, so she would do fine in any type of household.  She visits her foster cousins on the weekends in a single-family home, and she doesn’t play in the yard with the other dogs, she prefers the company of people. Pancake is spayed and up-to-date on shots.  She is living in Arlington, VA and she plans to attend adoption events in Northern Virginia.  Approved adopters may contact her foster parent at tnhuck@yahoo.com  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.March 7, 2026, 9:07 am

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Meet Queenie — A Sweet, Shy German Shepherd Searching for a Patient, Loving Home Queenie is a beautiful 4 year-old German Shepherd with a stunning black-and-tan coat. After a rough start in a shelter (she was pregnant and gave birth right before she was surrended to a shelter), she’s still learning how to trust the world, but with patience, consistency, and love, she has blossomed into a calmer (though still anxious), affectionate, and loyal companion. Once Queenie feels safe with you, she bonds deeply and becomes your devoted velcro dog. Queenie’s Ideal Home Queenie thrives in a peaceful, low-stress environment with someone who understands that trust takes time. She’s not a dog who warms up overnight, she may need a few months to fully settle, but she’s worth every minute. Here’s what she’s looking for: Queenie needs someone who will give her the time and space to adjust at her own pace. Once she trusts you, she’ll follow you everywhere — from room to room or straight onto the couch for cuddles. Her perfect day includes lounging on comfy dog beds, relaxing on the couch, and soaking up the safety of a secure, quiet home. She’s crate trained and sees her crate as her sanctuary, especially at night. If you have a yard, a fenced yard (6 ft preferred) will give her the comfort and freedom to enjoy the outdoors with confidence and security. Queenie does well on walks but she’s unsure around some dogs. She’ll thrive as the only pet or with a calm, independent companion who respects her space. Her timid nature means she’s best suited for a home with older children who can be gentle and understand boundaries. What Queenie Needs From You Patience — lots of it. Queenie may resource-guard a room or space when meeting new people, especially early on. This is her way of coping with stress, and with gentle guidance and time, it improves significantly. Consistency and structure. A calm, steady home will help her gain confidence day by day. Willingness to train. She doesn’t know many basic commands yet, so a patient adopter who’s ready to teach her with positive reinforcement will help her continue to build trust and feel secure. Taining with a professional would also be helpful due to her anxious nature. A loving heart. If you’re looking for a dog who will eventually bond deeply and stick by your side, Queenie will be your loyal best friend for life.  Ready to Give Queenie the Second Chance She Deserves? Queenie may take time to warm up — weeks or even a few months — but once she does, her love is unwavering. If you’re prepared to be patient, move slowly, and let this sweet girl come out of her shell in her own time, Queenie will reward you with devotion, gentleness, and lifelong companionship.
