Meet Axel! This handsome 4½ year-old Great Dane deserves a happy ending.
Axel’s original mom loved him dearly, but when she had to leave an abusive situation, her life changed in ways that made it impossible for her to keep him. Axel found himself needing a new home through no fault of his own.
Today, Axel is being fostered by a fabulous board and train partner, where he’s receiving love, attention, and professional guidance while he waits for his forever family.
And what a personality this big guy has!
Axel is fabulous with other dogs! He loves their company, although he doesn't always seem to realize just how big he is. At 150 pounds, he often falls victim to the classic warning: "Objects are closer than they appear." 😂 Whether he's navigating around furniture or maneuvering those long Great Dane legs, his larger-than-life personality and occasional lack of spatial awareness are all part of his charm.
Axel can be a little reserved when meeting new people, but give him time, patience, and the chance to build trust, and you'll discover an affectionate, playful, and wonderfully expressive companion who is as loyal as they come.
He's been working on his obedience and leash manners with his foster trainers and has made so much progress. While he's safe, cared for, and surrounded by people who love and want the very best for him, there's something they can't replace...a family of his own.
Axel doesn't need everyone. He needs his someone.
Someone who understands that a dog his size needs more than love alone. He needs calm, confident leadership and consistency. Someone who appreciates his personality and size.
Axel would thrive with an experienced large or giant-breed owner who can provide structure, a predictable routine, and plenty of room for those long Great Dane legs. He also struggles during storms and would appreciate someone who can help him feel safe when the weather gets loud.
But there's so much more to Axel than his size or his training.
He's the dog who makes people smile with his goofy expressions. The dog who doesn't always realize he's taking up the entire room. The dog who LOVES to play in water. The dog who becomes DEEPLY DEVOTED once you've earned his trust.

Axel is neutered and located in Houston, Texas. Out-of-state adopters will be considered, with additional special transport fees, due to his size. Donna's Love Pet Rescue is happy to discuss Axel's history, training, and specific needs with potential adopters to help ensure the right match.
