Story
Meet George: A Survivor Ready for a Second Chance & Loves to Cuddle! George didn't have the easiest start. Found as a stray, he was so hungry that he survived on anything he could find—even sauce packets (found in his stomach during his neuter). But those days of starvation are behind him. Though he’s still working on reaching his goal weight, his spirit is bigger than his frame. He is a social butterfly at doggy daycare and gets along great with non-dominant dogs. Because of his history, he’s currently a "student" in training, learning that he never has to worry about his next meal again. He’s looking for a patient family who will celebrate his progress and offer him the unconditional love he’s been searching for. Now that he is in a foster home he is settling in nicely, enjoys his mid-day dog walker and is completely trustworthy left out of a crate. He's ready to be a great addition to any family who's ready to love him. Update: Since being in his foster home, Sequoia, who now goes by George, has shown to be house broken, a couch potato, and knows some commands. This beautiful brindle boy loves sitting on the porch or going on walks and does great while wearing his Gentle Leader. He is very friendly to everyone he meets (old and young) and especially loves smelling leaves on trees or bushes. He is also a good car traveler. George would sit in your lap all day if you let him -- he is a huge cuddle bug and very loving Dane. Story
“Winston” is a 4-year-old, neutered male, brindle, weighing approximately 116 pounds. “Winston” came to us as an owner surrender on 01/22/2026, he had some head shyness when he came in but seems to be getting better about it!! He is a huge love bug and probably one of the best Great Danes we’ve ever had in our facility! The shelter is full and he is so large they have to keep him in the back in their double runs. Good with dogs, Not good with cats,
Story
Daisy is the epitome of ‘I’m just a girl’—a giant love bug, smart, curious, a little bit of a drama queen, and lives for a good snack. She is learning (and doing great!) with leash manners, has “sit” down pat, and is a social butterfly! Since she has perfected her Great Dane lean, she’d do best in a home with kids that are old enough to hold their own—only because she isn’t quite aware that she is a miniature horse. She’s been around kids 7+ and was inducted into their girl gang, so I’m taking that to be a great sign she’d do amazing with 2 legged siblings. Daisy has lived the good life being a stay at home couch dog in foster care and doesn’t mind being on her own during the days, but has told me she would thrive being around more people during the day for lunch dates in the middle of their wfh day—social butterfly, remember! On the practical side of things, she’d be ok in an apartment but better in a house. No large yard needed. She’s low-moderate on the energy scale and enjoys leisurely walks and will play toy for a bit before chilling out. She settles pretty easily and can be crated, but doesn’t NEED to be. Housebroken, doesn’t show signs of resource guarding, has not been exposed to cats or small dogs. Watching Daisy heal, grow, and having her personality emerge has been such a treat—the big, high value treats. If it were up to Grandpa & Grandma Foster, she would already have a new forever home—unfortunately, their current dogs feel differently. She’ll be an amazing addition to any family and bring you so much joy! Daisy is now available. Update: Our Miss Daisy is doing so well! I am so proud of how well she is adjusting, and she seems to be settling in very well. These past couple of days she has been very energetic when I get home from work. I took her to the dog park- And it went well! There were three other dogs in the park, two smallish poodle looking mixes and a medium sized dog. She loved the smaller dogs and desperately wanted to play with them, but she was too big and energetic to really be able to do much with them- she made them a little nervous with her play dancing. She tried to introduce herself to the medium sized dog, but he was not interested in her. We are also doing walks on just her flat collar instead of the easy leader. She has been really good with that as well. The only thing she does occasionally is decide she wants to go somewhere and just goes. We are working on being more receptive to understanding that she can't go wherever she wants, otherwise we will have to go back to the easy leader (which she is not a huge fan of). She has yet to meet a person she doesn't just want to love on- men and women. She really likes kids too, but with her size, she hasn't had much interaction- I am worried she will unintentionally knock them down with her love! DAISY - UPDATE APRIL 2026 Her skin is looking really good, her itchiness is almost gone, and her tummy and poops are everything tummies and poops should be. I may be making this up, but I feel like the probiotic we got from the vet has helped her process her food better and she has put on some good weight! She's still thin but it looks more like a stylish super model choice and less like neglect. Even when she must have been feeling terrible and even as we are doing treatments she doesn't love (ear rinse and drops), she has been the absolute sweetest, kindest girl. She really has yet to meet a man, woman or child she doesn't want to love. We are set in our routine, and things are going really well. She is a very good walking buddy, and we are able to take some fun wanders around the neighborhood and beyond. She loves sniffing all the sniffs and she assumes any time someone gets out of their car or comes out of their house as we go by that they are doing so in order to pet her! She would make a fantastic hiking or adventure partner- she loves to do and see things and really enjoys car rides. She can be a little timid of new places- I think she may not have been exposed to much when she was younger, but she really relies on her person for confidence. The only time she really got scared is when we encountered a grub hub food delivery robot near the ODU campus- she was NOT having that! But that was early on and now that we are good buddies, we have been able to walk past them no problem. She truly is a lovely girl and just desperately wants to be the best girl ever! She loves HARD and wants nothing more than to be loved in return!
