We haven't seen her with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! She tested positive for Heartworm disease but has already been treated! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. We are happy to talk more in depth about heartworm disease and treatment during the adoption counseling process. Additionally, dogs from Puerto Rico have a major transition to go through when they arrive and will need humans who are very committed to socialization. We think Lara would do best with either a resident dog or a family who can make sure she can go on walks regularly with other dogs, visit the dog park, or go to doggie daycare to learn the ropes. Lara is Looking For: Her forever family! How does a GREAT DANE, of all breeds, become homeless on Vieques, a small island off Puerto Rico? We don't know! The most important thing to know is that we are committed to connecting her with her humans. She's seeking her forever family for sniffy walks (can you just imagine?
