Are you looking for a walking/hiking partner? A travel companion? Someone to snuggle on the couch with after a long day and watch TV? Well your search is over! Let me introduce myself . I'm Barney a 30 pound one year old Jack Russell mix. I'm friendly with other dogs and wouldn't mind a fursibling to play with. I'm housebroken and sit nice for treats. I'm still working on controlling my youthful exuberance so I'd do best with older children. Did I mention how handsome I am? I'm ready to find my furever family! Story
Sweet, sensitive, shy Penny seeks a quiet, loving, and patient retirement home; could it be yours? Miss Penny is estimated to be 11 years of age and weighs in at 20 pounds. Her breed mix is unknown, and without a DNA test, we cannot say with certainty what breeds combined to create our beautiful girl, but we suspect Beagle and Jack Russell or other similar terrier high up in her family tree. This precious little lady was adopted from Pal's Place in June 2014 when she was about six months old. Ten years later, a now senior, mature Penny has been returned to Pal's Place and has again found herself searching for a family to spend her golden years with. Penny's previous adopters welcomed a new baby into their home several months ago, and Penny was having difficulty adjusting to the new, tiny human in the home. Penny was nervous and unsure around the infant. Her previous adopters felt she was living in a constant state of anxiety and stress and thought it best she be returned to the rescue for placement in a child-free home. Penny has been in the care of a Pal's Place foster home for several months and is adjusting to her new reality. After losing the only family she's ever known after a decade, she was very scared, confused, and depressed, understandably so, when she first arrived. Her wonderful, nurturing foster parent has given Penny lots of time, patience, space, and love to decompress and acclimate to her foster home. At first, Penny was not interested in interacting with her foster parent at all and would do all she could to avoid them. After several weeks, she slowly started getting comfortable and would accept a few pets from her new caregiver. She's slowly getting braver and more relaxed. Penny now follows her foster around the house, sits on the couch with them, and offers up some tail wags and smiles when greeting them. She is food-motivated, so many yummy, small, high-value treats have helped Penny bond with new humans. She also loves walks and a good game of fetch with one of her stuffies, and Miss P's foster parent incorporates several short walks and play sessions into her day to help facilitate trust and bonding. She is still spooked by quick or sudden movements of her foster parent and still prefers a very slow, deliberate approach. Penny is and most likely will always be extremely shy and skittish with new people and will need guardians who will understand this aspect of her temperament. She is housebroken, crate-trained, quiet, and well-behaved. Penny is being fostered in a home with several other dogs and gets along well with her temporary canine siblings. We feel she may adjust more quickly to her forever home if another dog is in the home. Many shy, nervous, or timid dogs thrive in homes with other dogs as they will look to other pups for cues, comfort, confidence, and support. However, this is not a requirement for her adoption as she has lived for the past ten years as the only dog in the home. Her ideal home is a quiet, adult-only environment with guardians willing and able to give her all the time, love, understanding, and patience she will need to adjust to a new home and new people. Guardians who will not expect her to be affectionate or lovey-dovey with them immediately and ones willing to put in the time and effort to earn her trust. While she may need some extra time and space to bond and trust, once she does, the love, affection, loyalty, playfulness, and companionship she'll return to you will be well worth the effort, and knowing you've helped heal her broken heart by offering her the retirement home she deserves will be incredibly rewarding for all. We understand Penny is not the most adoptable or desirable dog, but we have faith that her humans are out there! If you're looking to give an underdog, a dog who truly needs you, a second chance, a loving, forever home, then Miss P could be your gal. Penny is anxious for her happily ever after; please apply to meet her today! Penny is spayed, microchipped, up-to-date with vaccines, taking monthly flea and heartworm prevention, and is a very healthy mature pooch! Her adoption fee to the rescue is $275. She is in a foster home on Chicago's north side and can be seen by appointment only after an application has been submitted. Story
Amber first arrived to CRA with her litter of puppies, there after referred to as the Seinfeld litter. They have all since been adopted and while Amber's original family wanted to keep her, it ended up not working out and now she's in the market for her own happily ever after. Amber is a small terrier mix with lots of youthful energy left to entertain you. She is also, without any doubt, a chihuahua mix. She does not sell herself well and she gives absolutely zero craps about it because she knows her foster mom will continue to let her live rent free forever anyways. (Side note from her foster mom: she's holding me hostage please send help.) Amber is "v sus about strangers and would prefer it if you just didn't perceive her at all because quite honestly it's criminal that people should expect to just be in her presence for free without paying some kind of toll or subscription. Once she stops being a diva, she's actually a pretty chill little psych ward escapee. She has an olympic medal in zoomies (don't ask to see it though, just take us at our word please). She's cute as heck and soft like a bunny. She loves trashy TV and talking crap about you co-workers with you. Amber is also a very accomplished body guard and does not stand for people hurting those whom she has decided to tolerate. Have you ever wondered what your dog would do if someone broke into your house? You don't need to worry what Amber would do, cuz I'll tell you. She'll open up a full can of chihuahua sass on any unsavory visitors and make sure they think twice before crossing you again. For this reason, we'd like to avoid putting her in a home with children. Mostly because we're pretty positive she'd teach them about arson and pirating music and how to open a dog crate without using any opposable thumbs and sneak out of the house without being caught and we don't want to be responsible for the corruption of your family dynamic. Amber gets along with other chill dogs and has a very "you stay out of my way and I'll stay out of yours mentality. That said, she does not do well with barriers and gets extra spicy when she can't properly sniff a butt. For this reason also we'd love to see her land somewhere with a yard that allows her to not have to be denied butt sniffing due to leash restraints and distance. She'd love to meet you and extort you for all the treats in your possession. She's perfectly imperfect but also at the same time exactly who she was meant to be, and we love that for her. Don't pass on this sass! She's worth it! Amber's adoption fee includes her up to date vaccines and preventatives, heartworm negative, spay, and microchip. If you are interested in being considered for Amber and live within 3 hours of Chicago, please apply directly. If you have any questions before applying please email adopt@chicagorescueauthority.org.
