Story
Jett is 6 years old and was adopted from a shelter as a puppy for my then teenage niece. She is now in college and couldn’t take him with her. I have taken him in from my sister because she has had to take on additional work to put my niece through college which requires him to be left alone for long periods of time. I am legally blind and have a dog of my own, and it has become too much for me to handle as well. Jett is house trained and an indoor dog, but he would benefit from a home with a yard for him to run around. He is the sweetest dog and gets along well with my other dog. He loves back scratches and bully rubs. He has never been around cats or children for extended periods of time, but he’s always friendly with children when we’re out on walks. He has also been boarded in homes with cats and I was told he did fine. He does have allergies but they are well managed with meds. We want nothing more than for him to find a new home where he’ll get the same amount of love he gives.

Story
Meet Nova & Eddie — two incredible, resilient souls ready for their forever homes! About them Nova (female) — Chocolate Lab mix, ~3 years old. Gentle and a little wary at first, Nova warms up quickly once she trusts you and becomes a loyal, loving companion. Spayed, heartworm‑negative, vaccinated, and microchipped. Eddie (male) — Small black Lab mix, ~3 years old. Visually impaired but confident and independent, Eddie is brave, affectionate, and full of spirit. Neutered, heartworm‑negative, vaccinated, and microchipped. Their story Nova and Eddie didn’t have a stable start in life — they’ve been moved between neglectful situations — but they remain sweet, hopeful, and ready for kindness. These littermates are extra deserving of a calm, loving home where they can heal and thrive. Adoption details Bonded but adaptable: They can be adopted together or separately. If adopted apart, both must go to their new homes on the same day. Ideal home: Must be the only animals in a mature, experienced household. They’ve done well with kids before but will flourish best in a calm, stable environment. Training & care: Both are leash‑ and crate‑trained. They will go home with Trupanion pet insurance for added peace of mind. Requirements: An approved adoption application is required before scheduling meet‑and‑greets. Ready to meet them? These big, lovable “meatheads” are full of love and eagerly awaiting a second chance. To apply, visit www.hillhounds.org and complete an adoption application, or message us to learn more and arrange a visit. Could you be the family (ies) Nova and Eddie have been waiting for?

Story
Meet Applewood Applewood is our three and a half year old Louisiana lovebug! When Applewood came to HAP she was positive for heartworm so we got to work right away in getting her treated and cleared of heartworm and now she's ready for her furever home! Applewood loves loves loves to cuddle. It's her absolute favorite thing in the world and she will not hesitate to find whatever human is nearby and move her entire body in for snuggles! Seriously, she would just lay by your side all day if you'd let her. But when she's not getting all the love, she loves to play with her toys and can happily entertain herself if there's squeaky toys involved. It's the cutest thing to see her toss them up and run around pouncing on the squeakers. Applewood hasn't been the biggest fan of sharing all the attention with other dogs and has preferred to soak everything in all on her own so would do best in a home where she can be the center of attention. She has met a few children and has done well with her loving and gentle temperament so would probably do well with children of any ages. So if you're looking for a lap dog that will be your best friend and provide all the cuddles, Applewood is the girl for you! While completing her treatment, Applewood spent some time in foster and here's what they had to say about her: "Applewood spent a few weeks with us while she was undergoing heartworm treatment and she was a gem! Despite the meds making her feel a little yucky and out of it, she was always wagging her tail when she saw us and would spend most of her time by one of our sides soaking up all the pets we had to offer. She also found where the sun spots would be throughout the day and would move from spot to spot soaking up the sun. She loved sunbathing and relaxing in our backyard regardless of the weather. She wanted to be outside and loved to spend time out there and going on short walks while her activity was restricted. Applewood was a sweetheart and we hope she finds the perfect home soon!" If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. If you are interested in this specific dog but it ends up not being the best fit upon meeting, our adoption counselors will work with you to help find a match! All household members, including children and other dogs, must come along for the meeting to make sure it's a good fit. If a match is made, we encourage same-day adoptions! Our adoption fees include the animals' spay/neuter, microchip, age-appropriate vaccinations and preventatives, fecal testing, heartworm testing, and a small bag of food to get you started.

Story
Dog Name: Truffles Breed: Lab mix Sex: female Age: Approx 3yo Weight: 50 lbs approx.   Medical Needs: Truffles is literally allergic to everything. When she arrived from Georgia, she had mange. She has recovered, however, she continues to have skin allergies. She takes 1 fish oil supplement pill twice daily along with 2 Solliquin twice daily, and a half of Apoquel (16mg) twice daily.  Also, Truffles is on a salmon grain free food due to her allergies.  For Flea and Tick prevention, she takes Credelio monthly. Additionally, when she is experiencing a skin flare up, she takes medicated baths twice weekly.   Housebroken: Yes    Crate trained: Yes, her crate is her happy place. She loves to chew on her toys and bones. Truffles will only willingly leave her crate to go outside with her bestie. If her bestie doesn’t go outside, Truffles will bark and return to her crate. You cannot stand near her crate or the door, otherwise, she won’t go out or come in. Truffles will allow us to climb in her crate for scratches and love but will not willingly leave her crate for attention. Occasionally, she will venture out for treats, but not consistently. She will allow us to carry her to the couch, and will lay quietly in your lap while getting lots of love.    Good in the car: A work in progress, if her bestie is with her, she is happy, if she’s alone, she will shake.   Good on a leash: A work in progress. Again, if her bestie is with her, and she is on a chain leash, she will take a few steps. Otherwise, she is growling and chewing on the leash, with all four breaks on.     Energy level: medium   Need a fenced in yard: Yes, Truffles is no fan of leashed walks. She loves to race and play with her resident bestie and other resident dogs.   Dog Friendly: Yes. She lived her whole life with other dogs, and takes great solace with having friends. Truffles can be a bit rough playing, but loves all our dogs.     If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive?   Absolutely, over the past year, Truffles has made a lot of progress, but needs the confidence of a friend, to know that you can be trusted. This is a requirement for her adoption.   Cat Friendly? She is fine with our dog savvy cats    Kid Friendly: Unknown   If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? Kids old enough to give her space and understand that Truffles is a special girl who is not interested in attention.   Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them?  Truffles was rescued from a horrific abusive hoarding ‘rescue’ situation in Georgia, where she lived in an outdoor pen with numerous other dogs, and was literally feral when she was pulled. Over the past year, Truffles has made great progress, but she will never be an affectionate carefree dog, and needs an adopter who understands her needs and patience. Truffles will require another dog in the home to ease her transition.   Fosters Location: Harrington, DE   Application can be found here: https://www.grrde.org/adoption-application (if you already have an approved application on file email GrassRootsDE@gmail.com and ask the app team to pull your app ##2213948##

Story
*looking for a low key household* Dog Name: Pau Pau Breed: Lab Mix Sex: Male Age: 9-10 Weight: 60 Medical needs: Pau Pau is a distemper survivor. The disease can cause some long-term effect like scarring of the lungs. Due to this, his breathing sounds a little rough but he doesn't require medication. Will be be running any marathons? No! But he is content with short walks. Pau also used to weigh 114 pounds and his previous foster worked hard to get him to a healthier weight, so it's important that his adopter doesn't overfeed him. The thing about Pau is that he has a bottomless stomach and a nose for culinary delights, so you will have to put your foot down and offer him healthy snacks. Housebroken: Yes Crate trained: Yes. However, Pau can be crate/barrier reactive with new people, especially men. Good in the car: Yes Good on a leash: Ok, some light pulling Energy level: Medium Need a fenced in yard: No Dog Friendly: Yes, currently fostered with 3 other dogs and gets along great with all of them If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive homes? No Cat Friendly? Unknown (can be tested) Kid Friendly: yes, he was previously fostered with young kids and is currently fostered with two teenagers. If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? Due to potential reactivity (and since Ive never personally observed him around younger kids) I would recommend teens Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them? Pau knows sit, down and is currently working on the place command. He’s the perfect example that you CAN teach an old dog new tricks and eager to learn if it involves treats. Speaking of treats…. Pau Pau came to us from Texas where he was found as a stray weighing a whooping 114 pounds After a 1.5 year diet he is now down to 60ish pounds. That being said, he acts like a 4-legged vacuum cleaner and will try to snatch food if you're not careful. We’re looking for an experienced owner since Pau can be reactive when meeting new people. Meets are best done outside with some tasty treats. Once he warmed up to you, his tail never stops wagging. Literally NEVER.
