Story
Hi there! My name is Delores,!I am a 9-year-old, medium-sized lab mix that was trying my best to survive living in the forest before AHeinz57 came and rescued me. Living in the forest was not easy for me, so my hard start to life has made me slow to trust people and leery of other dogs, but I have learned a lot since I arrived. The volunteers have described me as shy, sweet, and cautious, but when I see people I know, my tail wags with excitement! I have learned to take treats gently from hands, but I am still hesitant to be petted. I even allowed some of the volunteers to brush me and change my collar, which were big steps that were not so easy for me! I even love fluffy beds and keep my kennel clean. One thing is for sure is that the shelter life is so much better than the forest, but I would still love to be in a home to call my own!Since being here at the shelter, I not only do well with my buddy Howard and have grown closer enough to play with him in the yard, but I have also learned to play nicely with other dogs and may even do well with another dog in the home. Although I have not lived in a home with another dog, it may be a little difficult at first to find the right routine, but as long as I have proper and slow introductions to them, we can learn to get along. I would do best in an adult home since kids are too noisy and loud for me, as I can get scared easily. It will take multiple meetings with me and even then, I might not be the most social, but I promise to love you forgiving me a chance. I do require a fully fenced in yard as it will help keep me safe and secure from wandering away. With the fence being a requirement, an apartment or townhome would not work well for me, but I appreciate the thought of wishing me luck in finding the perfect home for me! Now that the majority of my pack have since been adopted, I hear the volunteers talk about how all of them are doing well in their homes, and how they wish the same for me and my buddy Howard. I would love the opportunity for a quiet, patient, and consistent home that will let me grow at my own pace but will also show me the perks of house living! All of us forest dogs have our little quirks, but that is what makes us special. If you are interested in scheduling a time to meet with me or would like to know more information about me, please fill out an adoption application.Until then, I will be waiting for you and the chance to have a home to call my own.

Story
Hi, I`m Fenmore! I was found in an abandoned shed with my girlfriend (Summer Thayer) and her puppies. Because there wasn`t a way for us to get out and get to food, I taught myself how to parkour and I am now known as an escape artist. With my jumping abilities and my high energy, I’m apparently seen as a flight risk, so a fenced in yard is not required for me. I am a bit of a chatter box, so a home with shared walls may not be the best fit for me.Although I can be a little more energetic, I also like to chill out if given a little attention and love. When volunteers come to hang out with me, I usually give them a big hug to show how much I care for them! When I make new friends, I give them hugs too!In playgroups, I’ve loved to play with other dogs and have been in the rough and rowdy group, but I will need a proper introduction to any furry friends in your home as well as humans to make sure that we all get along! I make fast friends, but sometimes my energy could be a lot for little kids and can scare them, but older children may feel most comfortable with my energy. I have not met a cat since my time here at AHeinz57, but I bet the volunteers or employees here would be happy to test me with a feline to see if I will like them or if I would consider them more like a fun interactive toy.If you would like to know more information or would like to schedule a time to meet with me, complete an application on the website or call the rescue to talk with one of my friends!

Story
Meet Tator!Tator traveled from Oklahoma to Iowa, looking to have a second shot at life. He is a 7-month-old Lab/Retriever mix that currently is around 40 pounds, but we believe that he will likely land around 45-50 pounds once all filled out, since he still has some growing left to do. Now that Tator is here, he can focus on learning trust, what it is like to be a dog, and how to continue learning new things! Tator can be nervous about being touched at first, but once he feels safe and comes out of his shell, his sweetness shines through. Given his shy behavior, Tator may need a few meets to feel comfortable with new people, so a visit with all resident family members will be needed to make sure that he is a good fit. Although shy with people, he has done great with cats, and shows playful behavior with other dogs, but would still love proper introductions to make sure he would be a good fit! Tator is still building confidence on leash, so a fenced in yard is highly recommended for him at this time. With patience, consistency, gentle guidance, and a steady home to help him blossom, he will continue to grow into a more confident walker. If you are looking for a young dog with a gentle soul, with lots of love to give, please fill out an adoption application on our website!

Story
Meet Glenn! Glenn is a 2 1/2-year-old Shepherd/lab mix that is about 80 pounds at full growth and is still looking to find his forever home.Glenn can be fearful of new people, so he will need multiple introductions for him to warm up in order to feel comfortable, but once he trusts you, he is such an amazing boy! He loves to be silly and can be such a playful guy! He can entertain himself with a ball, benebone or Kong, and is always pulling out all the toys from the basket! He also loves to suntan outside and prefers to be where his humans are! Glenn is also very treat motivated and extremely smart! He has been through obedience clicker training and responds to several verbal and hand commands such as `sit`, `down`, `break`, `come`, and `place` (especially if it involved a nice soft bed to chill in!). He is also potty trained and kennel trained.Glenn would love to find a slow and patient home that is willing to encourage him to be the best boy he can be! Because he can be slow to trust new people, a home without kids would be best. While Glenn does well on a leash, he does need more training when it comes to other dogs and people walking by, so at this time, we are requiring a fence for him. Although he has learned to do well better with puppies, we do think he would do best as the only dog in the home, as he does have resource guarding with toys and food. Glenn would benefit with continued training to build his confidence and an enriching environment to keep his skills sharp. If you are interested in knowing more information about Glenn or meeting with him, please fill out an application at www.aheinz57.com. He deserves the best life!

Story
Meet Joy: Happy energetic sweetheartJoy is exactly what her name promises — a bright, happy girl who brings enthusiasm and love everywhere she goes. This 8-month-old yellow Lab mix who might have some GSD has a beautiful, thick, wavy coat and a personality to match.Joy came to AHeinz on transport from an Oklahoma shelter, escaping a dangerous winter freeze in an open shelter where care was limited. Now she’s safe, warm, and ready to start the next chapter of her life.At about 45 pounds, Joy is likely close to her adult size. She’s an energetic young dog with a big heart and lots of affection to give. She absolutely adores people and is always thrilled to receive attention — sometimes a little too thrilled! Because she hasn’t learned that not everyone loves jumping hugs, Joy would do best in a home without small children, where her enthusiasm won’t accidentally knock anyone over.Joy is:-Very friendly with people and dogs-Great with larger dogs who can match her energy-Not a good fit for homes with cats or very small dogs-In need of leash training and would benefit from continued basic training-Not mouthy or barky and slept quietly through the night in a puppy pen-Showed signs of house training though not sure yet how wellJoy has just arrived, so we’re still getting to know her, but she already shows signs of being a loving, eager young dog who will thrive with structure, consistency, and an active home. With some guidance, she’ll be an amazing companion for someone who enjoys training and watching a dog grow into her best self.Joy is spayed and will be fully vaccinated prior to adoption. If you’re looking for a fun-loving, affectionate companion and don’t mind a little joyful enthusiasm while she polishes her manners, Joy may be your perfect match. Updates will be shared as we learn more about this wonderful girl.
