Story
Meet Pongo — a 1-year-old, 51-pound gentle boy who is ready to blossom in a home of his own. Although he’s shy and timid in the shelter environment, the real Pongo shines once he’s away from the stress of the building. He may not show his best self during an adoption appointment, but this boy has so much personality waiting just beneath the surface. Out and about, Pongo may start off nervous or unsure, but he acclimates surprisingly quickly. Once he feels safe, he becomes affectionate, silly, and full of charm. He’ll roll around on the couch, wiggle his way into your heart, and offer up his version of cuddles — he wants comfort and closeness, even if he’s still learning full confidence with touch. While he may be a bit too shy to be a brewery or coffee shop dog, he'd thrive as someone's companion with slow introductions to new friends! Pongo has a playful, goofy side too. He loves toys and will happily entertain himself, tossing them around with joyful enthusiasm. On leash, he doesn’t pull much but does weave a bit in front of you — classic curious youngster behavior. He’s medium energy, enjoying a good play session followed by an equally good snooze. This smart boy is *very* treat motivated and seems to genuinely enjoy training. He’d excel with positive reinforcement and mental enrichment, though he will need guidance on not counter surfing for extra snackies. He may occasionally pick up items that aren’t toys, but a simple “eh eh” redirects him immediately. Pongo hops into the car on his own and rides well, sometimes giving a little bark out the window for fun. He appears interested in other dogs and could enjoy a canine buddy with slow introductions. Because he’s still building confidence with touch and new experiences, he would do best in a home without small children. Pongo does have some separation anxiety and will need someone to help him work through his fear of the crate. He's also been known to jump a 4.5 ft fence so a secure 6 ft fence will be best for him. While he's shown zero aggression, we feel he'd be best in a home with children 8+ years old as toddlers may overwhelm him. With his shiny lab coat, tender spirit, and eagerness to connect, Pongo is a gem who will absolutely thrive once he’s in a calm, loving home. If you’re willing to give him patience, reassurance, and guidance, he’ll reward you with love, laughter, and loyal companionship. Pongo has had positive interactions with other dogs. As always, we strongly recommend that resident dogs meet any new potential canine family members. If bringing a resident dog for a dog to dog test, please bring proof of Rabies, DHPP, and Bordetella vaccines. To meet your new pet, come to Guilford County Animal Services between 12 and 4 any day except Tuesday!

Story
Meet Felix! At 2 years and 8 months old and 58 lbs, this chocolate-brown sweetheart is the perfect mix of playful energy and irresistible snuggles. When he first heads out, Felix can be a bit high-energy, but once he’s with “his” person, he settles right in and becomes the ultimate Velcro dog. In the home, he loves nothing more than curling up beside you, drifting off into a cozy snore, and soaking in all the affection he can get. Felix is housetrained with a routine and is currently working on his crate training. He forms attachments quickly, so he can feel a little anxious when separated from his people, but with patience and consistency he continues to improve. Despite his size, Felix is incredibly gentle and has done wonderfully when meeting kids. Due to his size and strength, he'd likely be best suited for kids 8+ years old. He may occasionally pop up for a soft “hug,” but he redirects easily into a polite sit. This smart boy already knows “sit” and “shake/paw,” and he’s very treat-motivated—taking every treat with a gently. Once he’s fully comfortable, he enjoys toys and loves sniffing around outside. He sometimes needs a minute to warm up on walks because there’s so much to explore, but once he gets going, he finds his groove. Felix can be strong on leash at first, but with a harness he becomes much more manageable. Soft, sweet, and deeply loving, Felix is looking for adopters who can provide an active lifestyle, a little patience, and a whole lot of companionship. With the right people, he’ll flourish into the devoted, joyful family member he’s meant to be. Felix has had positive interactions with other dogs, but may initially come on a bit strong. He should do well with a playful canine siblings with slow intros.
