Tallahassee is a 9.5-pound Maltese senior with a soft spirit, a shy heart, and the sweetest presence you could ever hope for in a companion. She’s around 9–10 years old and has some medical needs, but she is full of love, calm energy, and quiet companionship. She is incredibly gentle and wonderfully quiet — truly a dream dog for anyone with shared walls or a peaceful home. She never barks for attention, food, or visitors. Instead, she prefers to quietly observe the world around her, taking her time to warm up before offering her trust. Once she feels safe, she loves being in the same room as her person, napping nearby, and soaking up the comfort of simply being close.  Because of this, she would thrive in a home where someone is around much of the time to keep her company. Tallahassee is a sweet, affectionate girl who loves being petted and spending time outside. She has a soft curiosity about the world and enjoys taking in her surroundings at her own pace. She’s doing well on walks and continues to grow more confident with each outing. She has been doing very well with her potty routine when kept on a consistent schedule. Tally does best with regular potty breaks every 3–4 hours and will reliably go outside when given the opportunity. During freezing or very rainy weather, she has also used potty pads on an enclosed porch. She keeps her kennel clean and settles in beautifully when crated. Like many dogs who are still learning house habits, she may occasionally mistake rugs or previously marked areas for potty spots if not kept on a routine, but she continues to make great progress. She now sleeps with her foster mom and loves the comfort and security of being close at night. Indoors, she enjoys cozy spots to rest, while outside she’s happy to explore, people watch, or simply enjoy the fresh air. Tallahassee is wonderful with other dogs and has a very calm, respectful presence. She may feel nervous if another dog rushes up too quickly or in unfamiliar situations, and may try to quietly slip away until she feels safe again. She has made nice progress in the car and is gaining confidence with each ride. She has also learned commands like “come,” “down,” and “go potty.” She has several medical needs, including a heart murmur requiring twice-daily medication, as well as a hernia and significant dental disease. Due to her heart condition, she is not a candidate for anesthesia, so she is not able to be spayed and her dental and surgical needs will be managed conservatively. She will need a home committed to her comfort, routine care, and gentle handling. Tallahassee doesn’t have much interest in toys, but she loves soft treats, warm naps, and being near her person. She is the sweetest little companion who will sit with you for hours, offering quiet affection and a peaceful, steady presence. If you’re looking for a gentle, loving senior who wants nothing more than a calm home, a soft bed, and someone to adore—Tallahassee is ready to be your devoted little shadow. Some souls are quiet, but they love the deepest—Tallahassee is one of them Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders. Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption. This will be at the adopter’s expense, so we encourage you to research the breed and be prepared for grooming expenses. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. Our foster dog Pecan sure hopes so!Pecan is a 3 year old Bichon mix who came to us after being stray for a bit. He was a bit of a matted mess but after a good grooming session, had a great glow-up! We are still working with him on his tear stains but those should also clear up.Pecan's daily goal is to be with you as much as possible. In your lap, under your feet, Pecan doesn't care, as long as you are together! Do you work remotely? Pecan would love to hang out in your office as you have a conference call (he promises to be quiet).Do you have another dog? Great! Pecan loves other dogs and is good at doing what another dog wants to do - be calm, hang out, play, he's down for anything. Do you have a cat? Great! Pecan is good at ignoring them, but he might try to play just in case they want to be friends.Do you have older kids? Cool! Pecan likes kids who have some dog experience and understand that sometimes dogs need space and peace and quiet. Do you have a beard? Cool, just know that Pecan might need a moment to check out and approve your facial hair.Pecan is house and crate trained and friendly to everyone. He loves baths, which is great because he will need regular grooming. Meet little Oliver! He is a 7+ year old, pocket sized maltese mix. Oliver weighs in at a mere 9 pounds! What he lacks in size, he makes up for in love and personality. Oliver started out very timid and skittish for the first few days in his foster home. Once he got comfortable with the lay of the land, he settled right in. Oliver loves snoozing the day away in his comfy bed. He eagerly wakes up for important things like lunch and pottying outside. He is pretty much potty trained, as long as he is let out regularly. If he doesn't go out often enough, he will eventually go potty inside. Once outside, Oliver loves to explore the yard. He trots around checking things out and doing his business. Oliver barks on occasion but is not overly vocal. He most often speaks up when a dog is walking by or when he is excited and really wants your attention. Oliver had extensive dental issues when he arrived in the rescue. This led to all of his teeth being removed so he is now part gummy bear! While the vet said he may be able to resume eating kibble, he is perfectly happy eating canned, wet food. Oliver sleeps in bed with his foster parents at night. They tried putting him in his kennel one night, but he wasn't a fan of that so now he just settles right into their bed and sleeps through the night. Oliver does great with other dogs and children. He is very gentle and snuggly. Because he is so short, he uses stairs to get up on the couch. He uses a couple of steps to get out to the yard but has not attempted a full set of stairs yet. He is a little nervous in the car but does well, overall, mostly just needs a little reassurance from his humans. Oliver does well on a leash but does not seem to like to go potty while leashed. He will hold it until he gets back home. If you need a little extra love in your life, Oliver is your man!
