Story
Meet Nora! She came in with her six brother and sister from an open access shelter with only outdoor kennels -- not an ideal place for puppies. We were able to help transfer them to us because of our dedicated puppy fosters. We were told she is a Great Dane / Miniature Poodle mix. She has spent the last couple of weeks with one of our fosters, here`s what she had to say:`Nora is very spunky and full of energy, but loves to cuddle when she’s done with a play session. Good with other dogs and cats. Definitely still working on potty training.`Stop by and meet her today!

Story
ADOPT CARL! 6 y.o., 20 pound, housetrained neutered Miniature Poodle/Pomeranian Mix Carl is a wonderful little fellow who makes a great companion once you earn his trust. Carl often lies with his foster grandpa while he watches TV. With people he is comfortable with, Carl shows he is a friendly, affectionate, playful dog who (naturally) loves his treats, those made specifically for dogs or broccoli, carrots or cauliflower. Our vet estimates that Carl is approximately 6 years old. We know virtually nothing about Carl’s past. He was picked up as a stray & taken to the local animal control as a scared boy who did not want to be touched. It took days for him to decompress in a foster home. Carl likes to chase thrown balls. He doesn’t often return them. He chases, picks them up, turns & waits for you to throw another. He also likes to chew on sticks. Carl’s anxiety is with unknown humans, not dogs. Carl gets along well with the other dogs in his foster home & has shown interest in other dogs he has met. Carl has quickly become friends with a few people who met him at his foster home & strictly followed our meeting protocol. Once he gets to know & trust you, you remain his friend, even after you leave him at the vet for a procedure. Carl does love his foster grandpa. While Carl is quite fond of sitting or lying on his foster grandpa on the couch, he needs & loves to run and play. A small dog secure fenced yard is an ABSOLUTE NECESSITY for Carl. Carl likes to spend significant time outside every day. Carl likes car rides & to explore on a leash walk. Carl will often bark at strangers, but calms down when not forced to interact. When he senses no danger, he will willingly walk with strangers with or without dogs. In the company of people he does not know, Carl naturally seeks reassurance from his foster grandpa. Do not expect Carl to go out in the rain. Carl needs a patient adopter without children with whom he can thrive. While prospective adopters’ children & Carl may form a mutual admiration society, it’s too much to expect their friends to understand just how different Carl’s fear makes his behavior. Carl’s trust in his foster grandpa has since achieved a level where his foster grandpa now shaves & cuts Carl’s coarse locks. For nail trims, his foster grandpa puts a cloth muzzle on Carl & holds him while the vet tech snips. We encourage you to see & learn more about Carl on his public Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61563018184933, or search FB on Carl Heather’s Foster Dogs. Carl is housetrained, neutered & microchipped as well as up to date on his vaccinations & monthly heartworm, flea & tick preventatives. Half of Carl’s $400 adoption fee has been sponsored. If you are interested in meeting Carl, then go to heathersfosterdogs.org. Using the menu at the top of the page, click on Adoption Application. Complete & submit your application, which will serve as the basis for a conversation, & you will be contacted. We will make arrangements to meet with prospective adopters for Carl only after a submitted application has been reviewed & a phone conversation has taken place. ***Please note that we are a foster based group located in the southern suburbs of Chicago. Carl's adopter must live in the greater Chicago metropolitan area.***

Dog social: He has done well with dogs around his size after a slow introduction, but has seemed less comfortable with larger dogs Cat social: Unknown Kid friendly: Likely not a match, as he can be protective of his food and his water bowl Raphael likes: - Snuggle time with his person - Running around and getting his zoomies out - being a smartypants and learning new things! Raphael is always happy to see you. Whether you’re gone for 3 hours or 3 minutes, he will wag his tail like crazy and ask for pets and hugs when he greets you. He loves being held and will put his little head on your shoulder or against your chest. He gets zoomies and loves to play with you. He’s very energetic and would be a famous athlete if he was a human! He’s also incredibly smart and he loves learning. He learned “paw”, “leave it”, “sit”, “down”, all within a couple of repetitions. He can be the perfect dog that fits your lifestyle, as long as you teach him what you need! Raphael has been diagnosed with central diabetes insipidus, which is managed with Desmopressin. Story
Piper is being fostered in PA. Piper is a gentle and quiet little guy who is fairly new to his foster home (January 2025). He can be found napping and usually changes beds so he makes it like a game of hide and seek to check on him. Piper is a bit skittish as far as being handled, especially with his head and face. He seems as though he's not been cuddled in a long time or else he is very timid in his new setting away from his original owner. He will take some time to learn to trust people and not pull away. If he is not being held, he does enjoy pets and scratches on his head and body, just not when being held. He is very good at finding his way around his foster home and will investigate or will follow his foster mom when it's meal time. There are also times he needs to be awakened from a deep sleep to eat. Piper is still adjusting to his new life. The first few days he would need his bedding changed about every 12 hours because he would mess in it but that has decreased to a very occasional poo on his bla

Story
Silverado is being fostered in PA. I am a silver mini poodle that was born on 11/9/2024. I was born blind, but I do not know that. I go by the name of River because I go with the flow of life. Being blind has not stopped me from playing, running in the backyard, and learning how to go up and down stairs. Toys, did someone say toys? "I love toys!" I love everyone I meet, 4-legged and 2-legged, with a wagging wiggly butt. Snuggling is one of my favorite things to do, on laps, on the couch..... well just about anywhere. I would do well in a home with a confident, gentle dog that can help me adjust to my furever home. Older children will be ok but little kids will scare me. I sleep in my crate at night. I am quiet for 6-8 hours then I need to go out to pee and pooh. Then I go right back into my crate and sleep till my Foster Mom says it is time to get up and play with my foster sister. I have a gorgeous coat that will require regular grooming. I do not mind being left alone as long as I am safely in my crate. I am a quiet guy. I only have accidents when my Foster Mom is busy and not paying attention to me. "Hey, I am standing by the backdoor. Got to go out.” I am also working on walking on a leash. It is a work in progress. I am UTD on all vaccines. So, I am ready to find my furever home. I promise to love you with all my heart. So, if I sound like you could love me forever, please apply to adopt me. BDRA has voted against the use of electrical fencing effective immediately.

Story
Banjo is being fostered in VA. Banjo is progressing with housebreaking skills. In January 2025, Banjo came to his Virginia foster home from Texas. His Texas family (who breed toy poodles) gave him to BDRA to rehome because an elderly person was worried she may trip over him. Banjo is a sweet 6 pound, 20-month-old poodle. Banjo’s coat is black except for a touch of grey on his back and then about two-thirds of his tail is grey too. Very distinctive and beautiful! He recently went to the groomers and she said he behaved very well! Banjo is very loving with his foster parents. He follows his foster mom around the house and loves to get attention. He especially loves ear rubs and is starting to enjoy “sofatime” in the evening with his foster mom and the other dogs. When he is going to be picked up, it helps him when his foster parents first let him smell their hands and also to hear their voices so he does not get startled by a touch he is not expecting. Once he knows who it is, he is excited and happy! Banjo likes the three other dogs in the foster home and enjoys sharing a bed with them - when they will allow it! When Banjo is out in the yard first, he immediately walks up to the other dogs when it is their turn to be outside. There is a cat in the foster home too. Banjo was very alert to the cat when he first arrived (he did not have cats in his former home) but now does not seem to notice her. Banjo lost his vision around the time of his birth but his hearing is good and so is his sense of smell. Within a couple weeks of being in his foster home, he learned his way around. He can be a high energy little guy, and anyone interested in adopting Banjo needs to be prepared for some activity! Remember, he is still a young dog and, while he is full-grown, he still some has puppy energy and can get so excited! At times, he will walk in circles; his foster mom guesses he has energy to burn so finds a safe circle to move around in (a safe circle since he has no vision) and then starts moving. But when he wants to, he can walk carefully in any direction he chooses. And, as he continues to settle into his foster home, he spends more time relaxing and less time on the go. When he is moving, he does a very good job at avoiding obstacles, including the other dogs, only occasionally gently bumping into them. He is even doing a bit of climbing (for example, from a dog bed to the top of a low dog crate that’s next to the bed). He is smart and is figuring things out! He has just started showing interest in playing with toys too. Banjo is very alert to sounds, especially new sounds, and he may growl or bark at times when he hears something new or unexpected. He also may join in the chorus of barking with the other three dogs who live in his foster home. Generally, though, he is quiet, including when he sleeps in his indoor pen at night. However, when he hears his foster parents getting up in the morning, he may bark a bit as if to say “come get me!” Banjo enjoys being outside. Like many dogs, he prefers mild, dry weather and, when the weather is good, he may walk all over the yard. There are times, though, when he is not interested in walking around (regardless of the weather) and so will stand still, waiting to be carried inside. While Banjo could likely learn to go up and down a step or two, Banjo would not be safe at this time going up and down a flight of steps on his own. Anyone interested in adopting Banjo needs to be prepared to carry him up and down steps. When Banjo arrived at his foster home, he was not housetrained so his foster parents have been working hard on this. He is making nice progress but still will have accidents. Anyone interested in adopting Banjo must be ready and willing to continue to work on housetraining with Banjo. Banjo loves to eat! When he first arrived at his foster home, he did not finish his food and turned his head at treats. Not anymore! He is thrilled at mealtime and cleans his bowl, and he loves to get a treat! Banjo was wonderful at his first vet visit, charming all the vet staff. The vet enjoyed holding Banjo in his lap while examining him. While Banjo was nervous when his blood was drawn, he never got snappy (nor has he ever been snappy at his foster home). He is a healthy dog and is on no medication. He is scheduled for a dental at the end of February to clean some tarter off his teeth and to investigate his eyes/eye sockets as there is some drainage. Once he is under anesthesia, the vet will be able to thoroughly check his eyes/eye sockets and make a decision about what needs to be done. After this surgery, it is expected Banjo will be ready to be adopted! :) Banjo is looking for a very special home. A home where his family understands he is still learning and where his family is willing to work with him as he continues to mature. Banjo is a sweet boy but would not be a good fit in a home with young children because young children tend to move quickly and unpredictably, and this would likely be startling for Banjo. If you believe you can provide Banjo with the loving, supportive, nurturing environment he deserves and can give Banjo the time he needs as he continues to learn and develop, please fill out an adoption application. More information will be provided to potential adopters after he has his surgery at the end of February. And remember the Blind Dog Rescue can work out a transport to get Banjo to you (within a reasonable distance). BDRA has voted against the use of electrical fencing effective immediately.
