Story
MEET CLARAClara is a beautiful, 3-year-old Mini Poodle who has spent her entire life in a puppy mill. Until coming to us, Clara didn’t know what it felt like to walk on grass, play with a toy, or feel safe or loved. She had to be shaved down due to the poor conditions she was living in, while her hair will grow back, healing her heart will take much more time and patience.Because of her past, Clara is very scared of new people and unfamiliar situations. She wasn’t taught how to be a pet, she only knew how to survive. She lived in a cage, went to the bathroom in her cage, had her babies in her cage and then had her babies taken from her to be sold at pet stores. She had little to no human kindness. Things most dogs take for granted, leashes, house training, toys, even gentle affection are all brand new to her.But here’s the beautiful part: Clara is trying. Since before Christmas, our staff and volunteers have been working with her, and she has already come a long way. She is beginning to trust. She’s started playing with toys. She’s learning that humans can be kind. And when she feels safe, you can see just how sweet and gentle she truly is.Clara absolutely needs another small dog in her home. She is a completely different dog when she has a little friend by her side. We believe she may have been kenneled with another dog in the mill, and she clearly finds comfort, confidence, and joy in canine companionship. Another small dog will help teach her how to be a dog, how to play, how to explore, how to feel brave.Clara’s perfect home would be a calm, quiet household with at least one other small dog (under 20 lbs). No children (they would be too scary for her) and No large dogs (they would overwhelm her). She needs a family with patience, understanding, and lots of loveClara is not housebroken yet, as she was forced to go to the bathroom in her cage for years. She will need to use pee pads while she slowly learns leash skills and house training, all at her pace. Nothing about Clara’s journey will happen overnight. Trauma like hers takes time to heal.Puppy mills don’t just hurt dogs physically, they rob them of normal life experiences. Dogs like Clara miss out on socialization, training, comfort, and love during critical developmental stages. The result is a dog who doesn’t know how to trust, how to play, or how to feel safe. None of this is Clara’s fault. She was never given a chance to just be a dog.

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Noelle... this pretty girl birthed litter after litter as a commercial breeder. Commercial breeding dogs, year after year, are housed in large numbers in small runs that have both indoor and outdoor access at all times. All day, every day, they are kept alive for one sole purpose... in anticipation for the next litter to make the breeder $$$$! This is 100% what factory farming of dogs looks like. These dogs are extremely fearful of human touch because they rarely are given any human attention. The only interaction these dogs get are when someone comes to feed them or to shove them through to the outside to clean their kennel. The wasted years of emotional neglect takes their toll on these beautiful dogs. It can take weeks, months or even years for them to trust you. Noelle has been in rescue for over a year. She is just now inquisitively coming out of her kennel. We truly believe she is ready to go home. We believe with patience, time, and alot of compassion, she will be a wonderful dog. The years spent in the commercial kennel may always linger in the background. You can see she wants to be loved so badly and yet, her fear holds her back. If you ever truly wanted to rescue... this is your girl. Your decision to consider adoption through ODAAT warms our hearts. We believe in finding not just homes, but forever families for our beloved animals. Our thorough adoption process is designed to ensure that each furry friend finds the perfect match based on their unique needs and personalities. Please know that we do not rush this process, as we prioritize compatibility over speed. Your patience and understanding as we work towards finding the ideal match for both our rescues and your family mean the world to us. Our applications can be found at www.onedogatatime.us . Please watch for a welcome email so we can process your application. If you are interested in adopting or fostering this dog. Please visit our website - www.cockeradoptions.org   There, you will find the current status of the dog, the links to our adoption and foster applications, and detailed information about our adopting and fostering procedures.   MY ORIGINAL INTAKE INFORMATION: Hi Everyone! My name is Chip, and I just arrived at CSAC. I was rescued from a puppy mill. I have spent my life in a barn, a shed or a cage. I do have a defective paw on my right leg. No one knows how I was injured. The CSAC volunteer says that I am very sweet. I was very comfortable with all the new people I was meeting, and I loved all the attention I was getting. I will be a great lap dog. The best home for me has people who have dog experience who can help with my training and acclimating to the outside world. The people in my new home should be able to teach me the skills I need to be a great pet: walking on a lead, house training, and socializing. Right now, I am in the caring hands of one of the great Vets that work with CSAC. They are checking me out and making sure I am healthy. Hopefully, I will find my new family that will help me to understand that I am a cherished family pet, not just an animal to be used to make money. For more information about this dog, email our Adoption Coordinator. Our adoption process starts with an application. If you are interested in adopting this pup, please click the Adopt menu at the top of the screen, read about our process, and click the application link. The medical and custodial care of the many Cockers in our care is tremendous. More and more dogs are abandoned with urgent and serious medical issues. We are committed to providing the best possible care for these forgotten friends. Unfortunately, the mounting high costs are beginning to limit the number of dogs we are able to take into our program. Even if you cannot adopt or foster one of our current adoptable dogs, please consider making a donation. The Cocker Spaniel Adoption Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization, and your donations are entirely tax deductible. Click the Donate menu at the top of the screen.
