❤️ MEET OBERON — A DOG UNLIKE ANY OTHER
Some dogs make you smile.
Some dogs make you laugh.
And then there are dogs like Oberon, who make you forget everything else happening in the world.
At first glance, Oberon can be intimidating. His enormous size, powerful build, cropped ears, and majestic appearance might make you think you're standing before a formidable guardian.
But give him a few seconds.
Just a few seconds.
And you'll discover something extraordinary.
Behind that imposing appearance lives one of the gentlest, calmest, most affectionate, and beautifully behaved dogs you could ever hope to meet.
Oberon is not simply a big dog.
He's a big dog with an even bigger heart. ❤️
🌎 WHEN OBERON IS AROUND, THE WORLD SLOWS DOWN
There is something almost magical about spending time with Oberon.
Watching him walk peacefully around the play yard, watching him run after his enormous balls (yes, we're talking about balls nearly a foot in diameter!), watching him approach you for affection...
Everything seems to happen in slow motion.
His movements are gentle and fluid. His personality is calm and joyful. Even his excitement has a certain dignity.
It's as though Oberon carries his own peaceful rhythm through life, and somehow, when you're with him, you begin to follow that rhythm too.
The noise of the world fades away.
The worries of the day become smaller.
And for a little while, there's nothing more important than enjoying the company of a wonderful dog.
Oberon doesn't just make you feel loved. He makes you feel peaceful. ❤️
🎾 BIG DOG. BIG TOYS. BIG FUN!
Don't let his calm personality fool you!
Oberon absolutely loves to play.
And naturally, a dog his size needs toys worthy of his enthusiasm!
His favorites include enormous balls, some almost 12 inches in diameter. Watching this magnificent giant chasing and playing with them is an unforgettable sight.
💦 And then there's the water!
Oberon LOVES drinking directly from the garden hose.
Giving him a bath can become an adventure of its own. He enjoys the water, and if you're the person holding the hose, there's an excellent chance you'll end up getting a bath yourself!
But that's part of the fun.
Oberon knows how to enjoy life's simple pleasures, and he has a wonderful way of making everyone around him enjoy them too.
🧠 A GENTLEMAN WITH BRAINS!
Oberon isn't just handsome and affectionate.
He's remarkably intelligent, attentive, and eager to please.
He already knows several commands, including:
🐾 Sit
🐾 Down
🐾 Paw
🐾 Stay
🐾 Come
And he's more than capable of learning additional commands.
His secret motivation?
TREATS! 🦴
Oberon absolutely loves them!
Given the opportunity, he might happily eat a mountain of treats. But what makes him so special is how gently he accepts them.
Despite his enormous head and powerful jaws, he takes treats with remarkable delicacy.
He responds beautifully to positive reinforcement, and training with him is a pleasure.
His future family will discover a dog who genuinely enjoys interacting, learning, and cooperating with his people.
🥰 THE WORLD'S BIGGEST LAP DOG?
Well... perhaps not literally the biggest.
But Oberon certainly deserves a place among the contenders!
When this magnificent fellow begins walking toward you with the slow, peaceful confidence of a lion, you can usually guess what he's looking for.
Affection.
And lots of it!
❤️ Gentle petting
❤️ Ear scratches
❤️ Relaxing massages
❤️ Belly rubs
❤️ A comfortable place to rest his enormous head
Oberon loves being close to his people.
Sometimes he'll simply settle beside you, place that enormous head in your lap, and quietly enjoy your company.
He doesn't need constant excitement or entertainment.
He understands something that humans sometimes forget:
Good friendship doesn't always need words, activities, or excitement. Sometimes, simply being together is enough.
And Oberon is exceptionally good at simply being together.
🚶 A GENTLE GIANT ON WALKS — WITH ONE IMPORTANT EXCEPTION!
Despite his tremendous size, Oberon generally walks beautifully on a leash.
He's calm, cooperative, and often happy to walk right beside his handler.
However, there's something every potential adopter must understand.
🐿️ SQUIRRELS!
Oberon has a high prey drive, and squirrels are particularly exciting to him.
When he spots one, his enthusiasm can suddenly remind you that you're holding the leash of an extraordinarily powerful dog!
For this reason, Oberon needs someone physically capable of managing his size and strength, attentive to the surroundings, and experienced with large, powerful breeds.
A properly fitted harness, proactive handling, and early redirection are strongly recommended.
The good news?
Oberon responds well to redirection when his handler recognizes distractions early and helps him refocus.
With knowledgeable handling, walks with Oberon can be peaceful and deeply enjoyable. .
🏡 WHAT KIND OF HOME WOULD MAKE OBERON HAPPY?
Oberon has many wonderful qualities that could make him an exceptional companion.
He's:
💚 Calm and affectionate
💚 Housetrained
💚 Intelligent and responsive
💚 Gentle when accepting treats
💚 Playful without being constantly hyperactive
💚 Social and people-oriented
💚 Comfortable with handling and affection
💚 A staff and volunteer favorite
💚 Neutered and ready for adoption
However, loving Oberon also means understanding the responsibilities of sharing your life with a giant breed.
🐕 Giant-breed experience strongly preferred.
Oberon's size and strength require knowledgeable, confident handling, appropriate equipment, and a home prepared for a very large dog.
👨👩👧 Children ages 13 and older.
Oberon has shown a wonderfully gentle personality, but his sheer size means he could accidentally knock over a smaller child.
The shelter recommends homes with children ages 13 and older. All interactions should be appropriately supervised.
🐈 No cats or small animals.
Oberon has a high prey drive and is not suitable for a home with cats.
🐕 Other dogs: Evaluation pending.
Oberon has not yet completed formal dog compatibility testing.
Encouragingly, he has not shown reactivity toward other dogs during walks in the park or on neighborhood streets.
However, this does not establish compatibility for living with another dog. Because of his extraordinary size and strength, a carefully managed professional compatibility assessment is strongly recommended before considering a multi-dog household.
💦 And yes... HE DROOLS!
Let's talk about one of the great traditions of Mastiff ownership.
Drool.
Oberon has plenty of it!
On your hands, your clothes, your lap, the floor, perhaps the sofa...
And when he shakes that magnificent head, you may discover that Mastiff drool has an impressive traveling distance!
Experienced Mastiff lovers know the secret:
A little drool is a very small price to pay for the extraordinary affection, companionship, and joy these dogs bring into a home.
If a spotless sofa is your highest priority, Oberon may not be your ideal match.
But if your highest priority is a beautiful friendship with a magnificent dog...
You might just have found your soulmate. ❤️
💙 WHY OBERON IS SO SPECIAL
Ask the volunteers who spend time with Oberon, and you'll discover that this enormous fellow has a remarkable ability to capture people's hearts.
One volunteer who knows him especially well describes their time together as something almost impossible to put into words.
Despite being considerably smaller than Oberon, this volunteer has enjoyed countless peaceful walks, play sessions, training moments, and quiet afternoons with him.
Not because Oberon is small or weak.
Quite the opposite.
Because Oberon combines extraordinary physical power with an equally extraordinary gentleness.
Of course, responsible handling and giant-breed experience remain essential.
But there's something deeply moving about watching such a powerful animal choose to be so gentle.
And perhaps that is Oberon's greatest gift.
He reminds us that strength and tenderness are not opposites.
They can exist together.
Beautifully.
❤️ SOMEWHERE, THERE IS A PERSON WAITING FOR OBERON
Somewhere, there is someone who understands giant breeds.
Someone who doesn't mind a little drool.
Someone who will laugh when the garden hose becomes a water party.
Someone who will enjoy watching an enormous Mastiff chase an equally enormous ball.
Someone who knows that a peaceful walk, a gentle head resting in your lap, and a quiet afternoon together can be among life's greatest pleasures.
And somewhere, that person has a place in their home and heart for Oberon.
Oberon doesn't need to become a different dog to be loved.
He simply needs someone who understands how wonderful the dog he already is can be.
And when that person finally finds him, they won't just be adopting a magnificent Mastiff.
They'll be welcoming home a loyal companion, a gentle friend, and a truly unforgettable soul.
🐾 Come meet Oberon at Upland Animal Shelter.
Spend a little time with him.
Watch him play.
Offer him a treat.
Sit beside him and let him rest that enormous head in your lap.
And discover for yourself what makes this gentle giant so extraordinary.
You may arrive looking for a dog.
You may leave having found one of the greatest friendships of your life. ❤️
