Story
Maggie will cross the room for kisses and then put both front paws around whoever she has decided is hers, which is a lot of dog to be hugged by and very hard to turn down. She is a five year old Plott Hound mix, about 55 pounds, and she has been in foster care since October of 2025. The dog in that house now is not the dog who arrived. She has grown cuddly and confident, she is house trained, crate trained and spayed, and she settles into a household routine on her own. She is good with children. Maggie has spent that year working. She graduated a beginner obedience class with high praise from her trainer and she is enrolled now in an advanced program with additional classes and private sessions. She knows how to be told things and she likes it. The rest of her day is sunshine, birds and the yard. In a secure area she gets off leash time and comes back to the door on her own when she is ready to come in. She will chase a stick as long as you are willing to throw it, and then she will come lie down inside and let you get on with your evening. A few honest things before you apply. Maggie needs a fenced yard, and that one is not negotiable. She is also strong on leash, strong enough that her foster still works at holding her after a year of daily walks and training, so she needs an adopter with the physical ability to manage her and the willingness to keep that training going. Her prey drive rules out homes with cats or small animals. She can be reactive to some small dogs and will need slow, thoughtful introductions to any dog already in the home. Maggie is living in foster care rather than at the shelter, so meeting her is by appointment. Email adoptpetersburg@gmail.com and we will set up a time with her foster to introduce you.

Penny is a sweet, affectionate 3-year-old Catahoula/Pit mix who is ready to find her forever person! She is truly one of the most loving dogs her foster family has ever had the pleasure of caring for, and she has so much love to give. Penny is an adventure buddy, a playtime enthusiast, and a professional cuddler all rolled into one. She loves walks, toys, treats, and being by her person’s side. After a fun day of exploring, she is more than happy to curl up next to you for a cozy nap. Physical affection means the world to her, and she thrives when she feels loved and connected to her person. Penny is smart, eager to please, and listens really well. She enjoys learning and is looking for someone patient who will continue helping her grow while celebrating all the wonderful things that make her special. Penny plays well with other dogs when toys, treats, and bones aren’t involved. She does best with very slow, patient introductions and is still working on her manners during meet-and-greets. Her foster family is also continuing to work on her excitement around other dogs while out on walks because she just gets so happy when she sees them! With patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement, Penny is learning how to navigate these situations. She is fantastic with kids but would do best in a home without cats. Penny is spayed and ready to meet her person! Her ideal home is with someone active, patient, and ready to give her all the love, cuddles, playtime, and adventures she deserves.
