That’s all Spirit had left when we rescued her from the shelter where she’d been waiting for weeks. A staff favorite and the undeniable queen of doggy playgroup, Spirit was adored— but as the days passed and the noise, isolation, and lack of stimulation wore her down, she started to panic. With only an hour a day (at best!) outside of her kennel, she grew desperate, even injuring herself trying to get out (you might notice the healing mark above her eye). But the moment she landed in her foster home, Spirit’s true self began to shine— and oh, what a spirit she has. Spirit is a 2 year old, 48 lb English Pointer mix who is playful, affectionate, and wildly full of life. She's the kind of dog who wakes up ready for joy and doesn't slow down until it's time to cuddle up and snooze. She starts her day around 6:30-7am, has a hearty breakfast, then spends the day zooming around the backyard, playing tag with the resident dog, and collecting as many toys as possible—soft, squeaky, chew, ball—she doesn’t discriminate. If it’s a toy, it’s her new favorite. She is especially playful and loves to romp with other dogs, always reading their cues and knowing when to dial it down. After a good game of chase or sunbathing session, she’ll snuggle up on the couch (or right on top of you) for a nap. In the evening, she enjoys relaxing with her people, then heads to her crate around 10pm where she sleeps through the night like a champ. Spirit is also wonderful with kids— especially older ones who are steady on their feet and can keep their electronics (and snacks!) out of reach. She's friendly and gentle, always excited to greet her human siblings in the morning with kisses and tail wags. During a recent pool party, Spirit happily patrolled the pool perimeter, licking water off kids’ heads and making sure everyone was having fun. She even tried a quick dip herself (once was enough!) and decided that lifeguard duty suited her better. Is she perfect? Not quite— but close. Spirit is strong, food-motivated, and highly trainable. She already knows “sit” and responds to “no,” but she’ll need continued structure and supervision— especially when it comes to chewing and counter surfing. She walks on a leash but could use more practice; a harness helps, and she prefers a brisk pace with lots to sniff and see. Spirit is crate-trained, house-trained, and a wonderful companion for an active home with a big yard, older kids, and another dog to play with (though she’d be fine as a solo pup, too—with plenty of people interaction and exercise). This beautiful, goofy, snuggly, joyful girl was days away from being forgotten. Now, she’s unforgettable. If you’re looking for a dog who brings energy, heart, and a whole lot of fun to the table, Spirit is your girl. Her name is Spirit for a reason—she never gave up, and she’s ready to live her best life.June 12, 2025, 5:01 am
