Story
Maverick, 3.5 years old (estimated DOB November 2022), neutered male, Retriever/Doberman mix (best guess), 55 pounds. He is in a foster home in SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS.
Maverick was the only dog saved from a euthanasia list at the county shelter in San Antonio several months ago. He has spent time in foster homes and has gone to boarding where he's enjoyed play groups with other dogs.
Some dogs make you smile. Maverick makes you feel loved.
This handsome boy has a heart as big as his adorable puppy-dog eyes. Maverick isn't looking for constant adventure or endless excitement—he's looking for his person. The kind of person who appreciates a loyal companion who wants nothing more than to be close, rest his head in your lap, and quietly enjoy life's simple moments together.
Maverick is fully house-trained, crate-trained, and an absolute gentleman indoors. He walks beautifully on leash without pulling, preferring to leisurely sniff his surroundings and take everything in. Every now and then he'll get so excited that he'll do the cutest little bunny hops before settling right back into his calm stroll.
Affection is Maverick's favorite language. He loves to gently rub his head against his people, and one of his sweetest habits is standing between your legs, patiently waiting for pets. If you're relaxing on the couch, don't be surprised if this cuddle expert finds a way to rest his head on you—it's his favorite place to be.
When it comes to other dogs, Maverick is friendly and social. He has lived with other dogs and has participated in playgroups while at boarding. He enjoys greeting other dogs with a polite sniff but is much more interested in peacefully coexisting than roughhousing. He's perfectly content lounging nearby and doesn't need another dog in the home to be happy. He simply wants people who will give him plenty of love and attention.
Maverick has no known history with cats, though he notices them on walks much like he notices other dogs. Because he hasn't lived with cats, a home without cats or one with slow, thoughtful introductions would be ideal. He previously lived with children and would do best in a home with kids 12 years and older who understand how to respectfully interact with dogs.
He's also a toy enthusiast, especially when it comes to squeaky toys and rope toys, and one of his favorite hobbies is soaking up the sunshine. Give him a sunny backyard or balcony, and he'll happily stretch out for a relaxing sunbath.
Maverick rides quietly in the car, although he can be a little nervous. His solution? Leaning his head against your arm for comfort—a perfect example of the gentle, trusting soul he is.
His ideal home is a calm, loving family that enjoys spending time at home. Whether you have a yard, a sunny patio, or simply a cozy couch and plenty of affection to give, Maverick will repay you with unwavering loyalty and endless love.
He does well on walks, trails or hikes but is low to moderate energy.
If you've been searching for a best friend who believes the greatest adventure is simply being by your side, Maverick is waiting to meet you.
