Story
Shih Tzu puppy fully vetted and ready for adoption.Backstory for Jasper Animal Saints Rescue Society was asked to help with a hoarding situation where several litters of puppies were born in quick succession. Dozens of Shih Tzu were living in a very small apartment when hobby breeding quickly became untenable. It is an honor to help get all of the adults neutered so the breeding stops, as well as ensure that the babies are placed with lifetime families.     Get to Know Jasper Age: 9 months Breed: Shih Tzu birthdate: 2.20.2025 Weight: approximately 10 pounds. He is 85% of his full size. He could stay this size or gain another pound. Vaccines and treatments:  Rabies  Bordetella  DHPP, part one and two   Other tests and procedures for the litter:  Heart worm test - negative  Erlichia, Anaplasma, and Lyme test - negative Fecal test - negative  Additional procedures:  Microchipped Bloodwork -- in normal and healthy ranges Neuter surgery in October, 2025 Requested adoption donation fee is only $900. This is to partly cover his veterinary bills and care expenses that our 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal rescue incurred to help him. Breed and Hair Notes  Jasper has hair and not fur. He is a stunning white Shih Tzu with the sweetest smile and tongue. He is incredibly handsome and distinguished, even as a baby! PLEASE NOTE: Jasper's hair will grow as it is not fur. He will need professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. Only apply if you understand the additional maintenance and cost these dear hair-not-fur souls need and are willing to commit to life for such care. Jasper has been amazing for his baths, haircuts, and nail trims. He will even just lay down on the grooming table, thankful for the attention, love, and care given to him. Personality Jasper is incredibly loving and playful. He loves to wrestle and nap with his littermate named Ivy, as well as the other puppies we are helping at present. He's also become friends with some of the older Saints like Stanley here in the sanctuary. His favourite thing in the world is to be hugged and carried around.  Ideal Home It is ideal for Jasper to be in a home with other small dogs and/or very dog friendly cats around. He would not do well in a home as the only dog, especially if his people are gone all day at work. Families with children are case-by-case. Jasper will especially thrive in a home that can give him companionship day and night. Jasper would be okay for a few hours on his own with his siblings if you provided him with puzzles and things to do while you’re away.  Plan on sharing your sofa and bedroom with Jasper. He will want to be by your side, no matter where you are and what you are doing.  If you have a very secure fenced-in backyard for running and playing, this is ideal for Jasper. He is going to be a little boy, even full grown. He will need exercise but not miles and miles of daily hiking like a working dog. Jasper is a companion animal in the truest sense of the word. His goal is to love and be loved.  Love and Commitment  At Animal Saints Rescue Society, our goal is to keep dogs out of overcapacity animal control facilities and out of a re-homing cycle. We place the dogs we save into lifetime families. With this in mind, we seek families who understand that an adoption is a lifetime commitment. The families who adopt from us believe that love is not a feeling, it is a decision. Some humans still believe it’s okay to try out a dog for a few weeks, a few months, or even a few years — then discard when they get bored or don’t want to deal with emotional or physical ailments. We are looking for the empathetic, kind, and patient humans in this world who view these Animal Saints as family, and they will do whatever it takes to give them what they need.  Will that family be you? We look forward to finding out and receiving your application!     December 2, 2025, 6:38 pm

Ivy has been incredible for her baths, haircuts, and nail trims. She is such a love and is so patient. Personality If Ivy could walk on her back legs all of the time, she would to keep up with you! If that wasn't enough to make your heart melt into a puddle, she leans into her hugs like it's the most important thing in the world. Story
Backstory for Toby Toby found himself in an overcapacity animal control facility that euthanizes due to lack of space. He was an owner surrender, dropped off to be euthanized because they didn’t want to care for him anymore. Animal Saints Rescue Society was asked to pull him to safety to give him a second chance at life.    Get to Know Toby age: 7 breed: Shih Tzu blend weight: approximately 16 pounds  Vaccines and treatments:  Rabies  Bordetella  DHPP, part one and two  Dewormer  Flea/tick prevention  Other tests and procedures:  Heart worm test - negative  Fecal test - negative  Neuter surgery Additional procedures:  • Microchipped • Dental  • Bloodwork - normal ranges overall showing healthy organs. He has a grade 1 heart murmur that was only heard by one out of two veterinarians who examined him. He does not need any medication for it, and we hope that with proper nutrition and a safe environment, it will not be heard again. He currently has dry eye that involves some basic dry eye drops. He is so good about getting them, especially when there is a treat involved. Now, he sees the eye drop bottle and starts to wag his tail! Veterinary care costs given to Toby by Animal Saints Rescue Society, based upon NYC area pricing, is $2,000+ Requested adoption donation fee is only $750. This is to partly cover his lifesaving expenses that our 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal rescue incurred to give him a second chance at life. Breed and Hair Notes  PLEASE NOTE: Toby’s hair will grow as it is not fur. He is a blend of Shih Tzu and… we are not certain what else! What do you see? Whatever incredible blend he is, he will need professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. Only apply if you understand the additional maintenance and cost these dear hair-not-fur souls need and are willing to commit to life for such care. Toby is healing from an untreated skin infection before coming into our care, and he needs medicated baths weekly at present. As he continues to get good nutrition and comfort in a safe home, this will be diminished over time. He loves baths and loves the attention, and it’s a special way to connect with him.  Personality Toby is a quiet gentleman who is so ready to be by his person’s side all the time. He is so regal. Even his gate is elegant! As he heals from his past neglect, his magnificence shines through. He is stunning and charming. We are especially impressed with his loyalty. He follows our volunteers wherever they go. When they work where he resides, he will lay by their feet in a bed. He does not demand to be the center of attention. He just wants to be included. His readiness to connect and love is so moving after all he’s endured. He deserves to be at the center of someone’s life for the rest of his days!  Toby goes potty on pads indoors, and he likes going outdoors to potty as well. He will get into your routine in time.  We are working on leash training right now, and he is doing well with walking. He would enjoy taking short walks in nature or in quiet neighborhoods with sidewalks. He has been gentle meeting other dogs here in our sanctuary and enjoys meeting new people.  Basic foundational skills training sessions with a certified professional positive reinforcement trainer are required for Toby’s adoption. Just a few classes are needed, and they are fun. It’s an excellent way to connect with your newly adopted Saint, too.  You can enjoy meeting Toby in his short film:  Ideal Home It is ideal for Toby to be in a home with adults and possibly older and very, very respectful children who have good experience around dogs.  Toby is human focused, though he would enjoy gentle and laidback siblings.  Toby will especially thrive in a home that can give him companionship day and night. He would be okay for a few hours on his own if you provided him with puzzles and things to do while you’re away. But he is very much in want of a person around.  Plan on sharing your sofa and bedroom with Toby. He will want to be by your side, no matter where you are and what you are doing.  If you have a very secure fenced-in backyard for sauntering about for exercise and can safely give him frequent walks on a leash, this is ideal for dear Toby. Some humans still believe it’s okay to try out a dog for a few weeks, a few months, or even a few years — then discard when they get bored or don’t want to deal with emotional or physical needs.  We are looking for the empathetic, kind, and patient humans in this world who view these Animal Saints as family. They do not view them as subordinates to humans or mere possessions but view them as partners in life. They are committed to giving them a safe and loving home with dignity and respect. Will that family be you? We look forward to finding out and receiving your application!         January 11, 2026, 9:00 pm

Story
Backstory for Smiley Smiley found himself in an overcapacity animal control facility that euthanizes due to lack of space. He was found as a stray, severely matted from head to toe with hair casts on his legs. Animal Saints Rescue Society was asked to pull him to safety to give him a second chance at life.  Get to Know Smiley age: 3-4 breed: Shih Tzu Lhasa Apso blend weight: approximately 17-18 pounds  Vaccines and treatments:  Rabies  Bordetella  DHPP, part one and two  Dewormer  Flea/tick prevention  Other tests and procedures:  Neuter surgery Heart worm test - negative  Fecal test - negative  Bloodwork - overall normal ranges showing healthy organs Additional procedures:  Microchipped Requested adoption donation fee is only $800. This is to partly cover his lifesaving expenses that our 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal rescue incurred to give him a second chance at life. Breed and Hair Notes  Smiley has hair and not fur. He is one of the most handsome and soulful Shih Tzu we have helped in quite some time. He is a rare blend of brown and white with a brown nose. He has possibly Lhasa Apso in the mix as well.  PLEASE NOTE: Smiley’s hair will grow as it is not fur. He will need professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. Only apply if you understand the additional maintenance and cost these dear hair-not-fur souls need and are willing to commit to life for such care. Smiley is very patient for his baths and grooming. He’s learning that brushing actually feels good. He hasn’t had much experience with grooming in his short life, but he is quickly learning that it’s a good thing.  Personality Smiley is incredibly sweet, and he is very ready to have his person. He was fearful of humans when he first arrived, not sure if he could trust. He now meets our volunteers with such love. It has been moving to see the sadness in his eyes fade and be replaced by a calmness and joy for life. Smiley feels safe here, perhaps for the first time in his life. We see a smile on his face now, and his name suits him perfectly.  Smiley is a young adult and is agile. He loves running in our sanctuary garden for fun. A fenced-in yard is ideal for Smiley, as well as leashed walks in quiet neighborhoods without a lot of dogs passing by -- at least not a first while he gets used to being on a harness and leash.  Smiley is just learning how to walk on a harness and leash. He has been taught "sit" and the recall word “here” in our sanctuary. He is working on stay. He now reliably sits for his breakfast, snacks, and dinner.  Basic foundational skills training sessions with a certified professional positive reinforcement trainer are required for Smiley’s adoption. Just a few classes are needed, and they are fun. It’s an excellent way to connect with your newly adopted Saint, too.  You can enjoy meeting Smiley in his short film: https://vimeo.com/1153430387  Ideal Home It is ideal for Smiley to be in a laidback and quiet home. He is hesitant around boisterous people with loud voices and gravitates toward our quieter and sensitive volunteers. Someone who works from home or is active and retired is ideal for Smiley. He will especially thrive in a home that can give him companionship day and night.  Older children are case by case — only those who have experience living with dogs, understand dog behavior, and have great respect and love for them will be considered.  Smiley gets along with dogs with proper introductions. He has learned how to play with Frankie who is listed separately for adoption. It is not a requirement for him to have siblings, but he would appreciate the friendship of other dogs in his life.  Plan on sharing your sofa and bedroom with Smiley. He will want to be by your side, no matter where you are and what you are doing. He now loves hugs and seeks them out.
