Story
Black and white Shih Tzu adult Backstory for Stanley Stanley found himself in an overcapacity animal control facility that euthanizes due to lack of space. He was abandoned at a "friends" house by someone who left the state and never returned. He arrived to the animal control facility neglected, not neutered, and with a damaged eye. Animal Saints Rescue Society was asked to pull him to safety to give him a second chance at life.    Get to Know Stanley age: 6-8 years breed: Shih Tzu  weight: approximately 16 pounds  Vaccines and treatments:  Rabies  Bordetella  DHPP, part one and two  Dewormer  Flea/tick prevention  Other tests and procedures:  Heart worm test - negative  Fecal test - negative  Urinalysis to help treat initial infection which has been resolved  Neuter surgery Additional procedures:  • Eye enucleation of his left eye that was too infected to repair • Microchipped • Laser therapy to help with initial pain from infection which is now gone • Bloodwork - some elevated WBC and BUN due to infection when he was pulled to safety. It has been checked twice so far, and numbers are decreasing to show he is healing. Kidney levels are higher than normal range and should be rechecked in a few months. Stanley should be fed a lower protein diet to keep his kidneys functioning well. Veterinary care costs given to Stanley by Animal Saints Rescue Society, based upon NYC area pricing, is $3,500+ Requested adoption donation fee is only $750. This is to partly cover his lifesaving expenses that our 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal rescue incurred to give him a second chance at life. Breed and Hair Notes  Stanley has hair and not fur. He is a handsome blend of grey and white hair.  PLEASE NOTE: Stanley's hair will grow as it is not fur. He will need professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. Only apply if you understand the additional maintenance and cost these dear hair-not-fur souls need and are willing to commit to life for such care. Stanley is wonderful for baths and hair trims. He loves attention, and giving him treats through it all makes it even more fun for him.  Personality Stanley is a gentle bloke who wants a quiet existence with his people nearby. It seems as though he has spent most of his life inside. He goes potty on potty pads, and he loves to nap on any available sofa.  Stanley is not thrilled about the outdoors, though he is just starting to show signs of enjoying it. He is timid about going for walks at present. In time, we can see him gaining confidence outside. For now, he will be your best friend inside by the fireside. He has met several dogs of all ages, and he enjoys their company. He is the quiet boy in the group, letting the bolder ones move forward while he waits for attention.  Stanley is incredibly sweet and an all-around heart melter.  He can see well out of his remaining eye. Given he is without his left eye, he can be startled if approached from his left side. He gets around well and has adjusted brilliantly after his surgery.  Basic foundational skills training sessions with a certified professional positive reinforcement trainer are required for Stanley's adoption. Just a few classes are needed, and they are fun. It’s an excellent way to connect with your newly adopted Saint, too.  You can enjoy meeting Stanley in his short film: https://vimeo.com/1142284479 Ideal Home It is ideal for Stanley to be in a very laidback home with only adults. Older children are possible, but only those who have experience living with dogs and have great respect and love for them. Stanley loves the company of other dogs. It is not a requirement for him to have siblings, but he would appreciate the company of other dogs in his life.  Stanley will especially thrive in a home that can give him companionship day and night. He’d be okay for a few hours on his own if you provided him with puzzles and things to do while you’re away.  Plan on sharing your sofa and bedroom with Stanley. He will want to be by your side, no matter where you are and what you are doing. No crates for Stanley.  If you have a very secure fenced-in backyard or outdoor space where he feels safe to venture outside, this would be ideal. Love and Commitment  At Animal Saints Rescue Society, our goal is to keep dogs out of overcapacity animal control facilities and out of a re-homing cycle. Our goal is to place the dogs we save into lifetime families.  With this in mind, we seek adopters who understand that an adoption is a lifetime commitment. The families who adopt from us believe that love is not a feeling, it is a decision. Some humans still believe it’s okay to try out a dog for a few weeks, a few months, or even a few years — then discard when they get bored or don’t want to deal with emotional or physical ailments.  We are looking for the empathetic, kind, and patient humans in this world who view these Animal Saints as family. They don't believe animals are subordinates or view them as mere possessions; they are partners in life. They are committed to giving them the safety and love they need to flourish.  Will that family be you? We look forward to finding out and receiving your application!       February 11, 2026, 4:27 pm

Shih Tzu puppy fully vetted and ready for adoption.Backstory for Jasper Animal Saints Rescue Society was asked to help with a hoarding situation where several litters of puppies were born in quick succession. Dozens of Shih Tzu were living in a very small apartment when hobby breeding quickly became untenable. It is an honor to help get all of the adults neutered so the breeding stops, as well as ensure that the babies are placed with lifetime families.     Get to Know Jasper Age: 12 months Breed: Shih Tzu birthdate: 2.20.2025 Weight: approximately 13 pounds Vaccines and treatments:  Rabies  Bordetella  DHPP, part one and two   Other tests and procedures for the litter:  Heart worm test - negative  Erlichia, Anaplasma, and Lyme test - negative Fecal test - negative  Additional procedures:  Microchipped Bloodwork -- in normal and healthy ranges Neuter surgery in October, 2025 Requested adoption donation fee is only $900. This is to partly cover his veterinary bills and care expenses that our 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal rescue incurred to help him. Breed and Hair Notes  Jasper has hair and not fur. He is a stunning white Shih Tzu with the sweetest smile and tongue. He is incredibly handsome and distinguished, even as a baby! PLEASE NOTE: Jasper's hair will grow as it is not fur. He will need professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. Only apply if you understand the additional maintenance and cost these dear hair-not-fur souls need and are willing to commit to life for such care. Jasper has been amazing for his baths, haircuts, and nail trims. He will even just lay down on the grooming table, thankful for the attention, love, and care given to him. Personality Jasper is incredibly loving and playful. He loves to wrestle and nap with his littermate named Ivy, as well as the other puppies we are helping at present. He's also become friends with some of the older Saints like Stanley here in the sanctuary. His favourite thing in the world is to be hugged and carried around.  Ideal Home It is ideal for Jasper to be in a home with other small dogs and/or very dog friendly cats around. He would not do well in a home as the only dog, especially if his people are gone all day at work. Families with children are case-by-case. Jasper will especially thrive in a home that can give him companionship day and night. Jasper would be okay for a few hours on his own with his siblings if you provided him with puzzles and things to do while you’re away.  Plan on sharing your sofa and bedroom with Jasper. He will want to be by your side, no matter where you are and what you are doing. Crating is not an option for Jasper. If you need crates for your lifestyle, then Jasper is not an ideal fit.  If you have a very secure fenced-in backyard for running and playing, this is ideal for Jasper. He is going to be a little boy, even full grown. He will need exercise but not miles and miles of daily hiking like a working dog. Jasper is a companion animal in the truest sense of the word. His goal is to love and be loved.  Love and Commitment  At Animal Saints Rescue Society, our goal is to keep dogs out of overcapacity animal control facilities and out of a re-homing cycle. Ivy has been incredible for her baths, haircuts, and nail trims. She is such a love and is so patient. Personality If Ivy could walk on her back legs all of the time, she would to keep up with you! If that wasn't enough to make your heart melt into a puddle, she leans into her hugs like it's the most important thing in the world. She's a Saint in the truest sense of the word.  Ivy loves to play and is quite a friend to everyone here -- from baby Shih Tzu to senior Saints here in the sanctuary. She likes to keep up with her littermate Jasper and especially snuggles with him.  Ideal Home It is ideal for Ivy to be in a home with other small dogs and/or very dog friendly cats around. Full grown, she will be 11-13 pounds Vaccines and treatments so far:  Rabies  DHPP plus lepto, part one  Other tests and procedures:  Fecal test: negative Spay surgery scheduled for April unless she is adopted first. If adopted before April, spay voucher will be given to adopters for our partnering animal hospital. Alternatively, adopter can have surgery completed by veterinarian of their choice at their expense within a month after adoption.  Additional procedures:  • Microchipped Requested adoption donation fee is only $900. This is to partly cover her medical expenses that our 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal rescue has incurred.  Breed and Hair Notes  Peggy has hair and not fur. She is mostly Shih Tzu with a possibility of other breeds in the mix.  PLEASE NOTE: Peggy's hair will grow as it is not fur. She will need professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. Only apply if you understand the additional maintenance and cost these dear hair-not-fur souls need and are willing to commit to life for such care. Peggy is laidback for baths and haircuts. She leans in to hugs, and she loves them while we are trimming her.  Personality It is Peggy's goal to be everyone's friend. She is the peacemaker of the group. She wants to be friends with everyone -- especially her sister Frannie.  Peggy is young and full of energy and joy. Just like her littermates, she loves to bound around the sanctuary, and she meets the older Animal Saints with ease. She especially loves running and playing with her littermate Frannie. If you're looking to adopt a pair, they are gentle and sweet together.  Peggy is being socialized well by meeting some of our volunteers, and she meets new people with ease. Peggy has had her first training sessions, and she knows how to sit. She sits and waits patiently for every meal. She also knows the recall word “here.” We expect her family to pick up where we have started in her training.  Basic foundational skills training sessions with a certified professional positive reinforcement trainer are required for Betty’s adoption. Just a few classes are needed, and they are fun. It’s an excellent way to connect with your newly adopted Saint, too.  You can enjoy meeting Peggy in this short film: https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/1166198029 Ideal Home It is ideal for Peggy to be in a home with people who are around most of the time. If you need to be away for a few hours during the day or night, she needs canine siblings to keep her company.  Children are case by case — only those who have experience living with dogs, understand dog behavior, and have great respect and love for them will be considered.  Peggy enjoys the the company of other dogs. It is not a requirement for her to have siblings, but she would appreciate and very much needs the friendship of other dogs in her life. Again, she is very good friends with her littermate Peggy, and it's hilarious to see them run and play together. If you are open to adopting a pair, they would do well living together.  Plan on sharing your sofa and bedroom with Peggy. She will want to be by your side, no matter where you are and what you are doing. No crates for Peggy. If they are a must for your lifestyle, then she is not for you.  If you have a very secure fenced-in backyard or outdoor space where she can bound about safely outside, this would be ideal.  Love and Commitment  At Animal Saints Rescue Society, our goal is to keep dogs out of overcapacity animal control facilities and out of a re-homing cycle. Story
Backstory for Toby Toby found himself in an overcapacity animal control facility that euthanizes due to lack of space. He was an owner surrender, dropped off to be euthanized because they didn’t want to care for him anymore. Animal Saints Rescue Society was asked to pull him to safety to give him a second chance at life.    Get to Know Toby age: 7 breed: Shih Tzu blend weight: approximately 16 pounds  Vaccines and treatments:  Rabies  Bordetella  DHPP, part one and two  Dewormer  Flea/tick prevention  Other tests and procedures:  Heart worm test - negative  Fecal test - negative  Neuter surgery Additional procedures:  • Microchipped • Dental  • Bloodwork - normal ranges overall showing healthy organs. He has a grade 1 heart murmur that was only heard by one out of two veterinarians who examined him. He does not need any medication for it, and we hope that with proper nutrition and a safe environment, it will not be heard again. He currently has dry eye that involves some basic dry eye drops. He is so good about getting them, especially when there is a treat involved. Now, he sees the eye drop bottle and starts to wag his tail! Veterinary care costs given to Toby by Animal Saints Rescue Society, based upon NYC area pricing, is $2,000+ Requested adoption donation fee is only $750. This is to partly cover his lifesaving expenses that our 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal rescue incurred to give him a second chance at life. Breed and Hair Notes  PLEASE NOTE: Toby’s hair will grow as it is not fur. He is a blend of Shih Tzu and… we are not certain what else! What do you see? Whatever incredible blend he is, he will need professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. Only apply if you understand the additional maintenance and cost these dear hair-not-fur souls need and are willing to commit to life for such care. Toby is healing from an untreated skin infection before coming into our care, and he needs medicated baths weekly at present. As he continues to get good nutrition and comfort in a safe home, this will be diminished over time. He loves baths and loves the attention, and it’s a special way to connect with him.  Personality Toby is a quiet gentleman who is so ready to be by his person’s side all the time. He is so regal. Even his gate is elegant! As he heals from his past neglect, his magnificence shines through. He is stunning and charming. We are especially impressed with his loyalty. He follows our volunteers wherever they go. When they work where he resides, he will lay by their feet in a bed. He does not demand to be the center of attention. He just wants to be included. His readiness to connect and love is so moving after all he’s endured. He deserves to be at the center of someone’s life for the rest of his days!  Toby goes potty on pads indoors, and he likes going outdoors to potty as well. He will get into your routine in time.  We are working on leash training right now, and he is doing well with walking. He would enjoy taking short walks in nature or in quiet neighborhoods with sidewalks. He has been gentle meeting other dogs here in our sanctuary and enjoys meeting new people.  Basic foundational skills training sessions with a certified professional positive reinforcement trainer are required for Toby’s adoption. Just a few classes are needed, and they are fun. It’s an excellent way to connect with your newly adopted Saint, too.  You can enjoy meeting Toby in his short film:  Ideal Home It is ideal for Toby to be in a home with adults and possibly older and very, very respectful children who have good experience around dogs.  Toby is human focused, though he would enjoy gentle and laidback siblings.  Toby will especially thrive in a home that can give him companionship day and night. He would be okay for a few hours on his own if you provided him with puzzles and things to do while you’re away. But he is very much in want of a person around.  Plan on sharing your sofa and bedroom with Toby. He will want to be by your side, no matter where you are and what you are doing.  If you have a very secure fenced-in backyard for sauntering about for exercise and can safely give him frequent walks on a leash, this is ideal for dear Toby.  Love and Commitment  At Animal Saints Rescue Society, our goal is to keep dogs out of overcapacity animal control facilities and out of a re-homing cycle. We place the dogs we save into lifetime families. With this in mind, we seek families who understand that an adoption is a lifetime commitment.  The families who adopt from us believe that love is not a feeling, it is a decision. Some humans still believe it’s okay to try out a dog for a few weeks, a few months, or even a few years — then discard when they get bored or don’t want to deal with emotional or physical needs.  We are looking for the empathetic, kind, and patient humans in this world who view these Animal Saints as family. They do not view them as subordinates to humans or mere possessions but view them as partners in life. They are committed to giving them a safe and loving home with dignity and respect. Backstory for Kacey  Kacey found herself in an overcapacity animal control facility that euthanizes due to lack of space. Animal Saints Rescue Society was asked to pull her to safety to give her a second chance at life.  _____________________  Get to Know Kacey  age: 7-8  breed: Shih Tzu, Maltese?  weight: approximately 9 Vaccines and treatments:  Rabies  Bordetella  DHPP, part one and two  Dewormer Flea/tick prevention  Other tests and procedures:  Heart worm test - negative  Fecal test - negative  Spay surgery  Additional procedures and care:  • Microchipped  • Dental  • Bloodwork - normal ranges overall showing healthy organs. Some were very slightly elevated levels initially due to skin infection and hotspots that have been treated and healed.    Veterinary care costs given to Kacey by Animal Saints Rescue Society, based upon NYC area pricing, is $2,500+  Requested adoption donation fee is only $750. This is to partly cover her lifesaving expenses that our 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal rescue incurred to give her a second chance at life.  __________________  Breed and Hair Notes Kacey has hair and not fur. She is an incredible Shih Tzu blend. Maltese? Lhasa? What do you see? Whatever she is, she's a Saint. PLEASE NOTE: Kacey’s hair will grow as it is not fur. She will need professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. Only apply if you understand the additional maintenance and cost these dear hair-not-fur souls need and are willing to commit to life for such care.  Kacey has been treated for severe skin infection and hotspots that happened before coming into our care. She had to be partially shaved down to let her skin heal. Her hair is growing in beautifully, and her skin is looking so healthy. We are thrilled that she’s doing so well with time and patience.    ___________________ Personality  Kacey is the quietest and sweetest Saint here in our sanctuary. She is very, very shy initially. When she gets nervous, she will twirl a bit until she calms down. Once she does, she wants to connect. She follows the humans she trusts around and is so loyal. She wants to be part of what they are doing, though sometimes she needs an invitation. We expect this will change in time, once she has her person.  Her gentleness and soulful eyes have such a presence in the room, even though she barely makes a sound. Once she trusts a person, she will dance for them before dinner. She loves to connect by coming up to our faces, touch her nose to ours, and take in the smell of our hair.  Kacey has met all of the adoptable Saints in the sanctuary, and she is so gentle with everyone — even the more sensitive ones like dear Abigail. She is nervous around puppy energy, and she’ll wait in the corner while they are playing. She gravitates toward the quieter Saints like Toby and Stanley. They hang out together by the fireside, enjoying the safety and quietude of the sanctuary while they await their lifetime families to adopt them.  Kacey goes potty outside as well as potty on pads indoors. She will adjust to your schedule. She is starting to walk on a leash, but she will need some time and patience for her to be more confident on walks. She’d prefer a quieter setting; she would not do well as a city dweller — if you want to take her out on walks in a busy setting. She will thrive with a quiet backyard or a quiet walk (and possibly carry) to a lowkey local park.  Kacey is a bit camera shy, but you can get a glimpse of her gentleness and angelic presence in this short film: https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/1167209014   Ideal Home  Kacey will especially thrive in a home that can give her companionship day and night. She would be okay for a few hours on her own, but she is truly in want of being around someone most of the time.  Older children are case by case — only those who have experience living with dogs, understand dog behavior, and have great respect and love for them will be considered. Kacey gets nervous around energetic puppies and louder noises, so it’s best to match her with gentler, quieter humans and canines.  Plan on sharing your sofa and bedroom with Kacey. She will want to be by your side. No crates for Kacey. If they are a must for your lifestyle, then she is not for you.  She likes her quiet time, but expect her to dance with joy when you return back into the room. Her gentleness, sweetness, and loyalty will blow you away.    ___________________  Love and Commitment At Animal Saints Rescue Society, our goal is to keep dogs out of overcapacity animal control facilities and out of a re-homing cycle.
