Story
Cayden’s backstory: Cayden was a stray at an animal control facility, completely covered in dirt and mats with bulging eyes due to untreated glaucoma. When we saw him, we knew we had to pull him to safety after no owners came forward to claim him. His treatment became an emergency, and several rescue transport volunteers made a relay across several states to get him to our emergency veterinarian. He had to have one eye removed because it was beyond repair and was very painful for him. Thankfully, we were able to save his other, though he lost his sight from it. Cayden also had a complete dental, neuter, and is now up-to-date on his essential vaccinations. Breed and Hair Notes: Cayden has hair that grows and not fur. He is a stunning blend of Shih Tzu and perhaps Lhasa Apso. He is agreeable to baths at home and calmly stands in a bathtub for them. He is grateful to be taken care of after years of neglect. You can see how different he looks with long hair and then shaved. We wanted to keep his stunning locks, but they were too matted to his skin. He is now shaved down, but his hair will grow again! PLEASE NOTE: his hair will grow indefinitely, and he will need professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. Only apply if you understand the additional maintenance and cost that these dear hair-not-fur souls need and are willing to commit to life for such care. Get to Know Cayden: Cayden is approximately 5-6 years old and about 18 pounds. He is currently being taught to go potty on pads indoors and to go potty outside on walks by his foster family. Despite Cayden not having his sight, he LOVES his walks. He follows the lead of his person, and he confidently walks and trusts his person’s guidance. Cayden wags his tail a lot and is described as super sweet and lovable by everyone who meets him. Recently, Cayden has learned the joys of sleeping with the pack on the bed for naps and throughout the night. He also enjoys dog beds and is happy on his own at times throughout the day. When he wants to know who is around him and where everyone is, he will call bark, then wait for an answer as if to ask, “Where are you? I want to be with you!” He seldom barks, but he uses his voice strategically to connect with this family. He wants to be part of things, and he will follow with sound and smell to stay connected. He is impressive and amazing. He does not feel sorry for himself, and we should not feel sorry for him either. We can learn a lot from dear Cayden, just by watching his actions and love for life, despite all he’s been through. Cayden loves to be cuddled and fall asleep in his people’s arms. He’s a gentle soul with so much life to live. Ideal Home: Cayden is a pretty laid back guy and takes his lack of sight in stride. At the same time, he needs extra attention due to it. Things must stay in place in the home so he can maneuver safely through it. A quiet and calm home is ideal, not one that has a lot of people coming and going in it. He should also be in a home without young children who do not understand boundaries. Older children who respect boundaries would be loved by Cayden. If you expect to put Cayden in a crate at all during the day or night, please do not apply. Cayden will flourish in a home where he can hang out with his people during the day and sleep with them at night. Cayden can successfully be in a home where he is the only dog, though he lives in a foster home with multiple dogs, and he really enjoys their company. Cayden is a gem, and we are so thrilled to have the opportunity to give him this second chance for a committed and ideal family!

Story
Ernest’s Backstory: Ernest was a stray at animal control. We found him completely covered in mats, dirty, and emaciated. We knew he needed our help as it was clear no one was going to step forward. He was rushed to one of our experienced fosters who became an ICU with one of our partnering veterinarians, helping to help him stable. He made it through some dark and long days, and we are starting to see brighter days for dear Ernest! Breed and Hair Notes: Ernest has hair that grows and not fur. He is an incredible miniature Shih Tzu who weighs about 6 pounds. His grey and black mix of hair is distinguished and endearing. He is agreeable to hair trims and is patient with grooming. PLEASE NOTE: his hair will grow indefinitely, and he will need professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. Only apply if you understand the additional maintenance and cost that these dear hair-not-fur souls need and are willing to commit to life for such care. Get to Know Ernest: Ernest is a gem in the truest sense of the word. His former people never gave him a dental, and they let his teeth rot. We just had an emergency dental for him (he was neutered at the same time) and all of his painful teeth are now removed. He has none remaining, which means he will need high quality soft food only. Never kibble as he cannot chew hard food. Some doctors place him at 10+, though the veterinarian who just did surgery for him says his bloodwork looks like he's only five it's so good! Because we do not know his history, we do not know. What we do know is that has a 4/6 heart murmur and is currently on Lasix and VetMedin. He is in the beginning stages of congestive heart failure. If you are not familiar with the disease, please look it up so you can have a sense of how to best help him. He will be on this medicine for the rest of his life, which is shortened due to this form of heart disease. Think quality time with gem Ernest Edward. Ernest Edward is also mostly blind, but he gets along without any issue, and he does not let this stop him from moving about from dog bed to dog bed! It seems he can see shadows and bright light. He has severe dry eye, and he needs cyclosporine morning and night and Optixcare gel 4 times a day. Ernest Edward is a gentle and loving soul. He is so deserving of an ideal home where he can be doted on for his remaining months, and hopefully years, of his life. He loves hanging out in dog beds with the other gem dogs our sanctuary. He is ready to be loved and to relax! Ideal Home: If you expect to put Ernest in a crate at all during the day or night, please do not apply. Ernest will flourish in a home where he can hang out with his people during the day and sleep near them at night. He is a gem with special needs, and he should not be left at home for long periods of time. People who work from home most of the time or retired people who know how to take care of gems like Ernest is what he needs. Ernest can successfully be in a home where he is the only dog. He currently lives in a foster home with multiple dogs, so he can also be in a home with other gentle animals. He should NOT be in a home with young children. Only respectful teenagers and adults should be in his family. A quiet and low-key household is what Ernest needs. Are you ready to be utterly blown away by the love gem Ernest will give you? If so, we look forward to receiving your adoption application!

Teddy’s Backstory: Teddy’s life before being Animal Saint’s care was one of neglect. His elderly person was too ill to take care of him, and it resulted in months of not being groomed and living in a crate. He is ready to live a life of freedom in a home with lots of attention and life outside of a crate! Breed and Hair Notes: Teddy has hair that grows and not fur. He is a stunning Shih Tzu, darling as darling can be. He has incredible hair, now that he’s had time to recuperate. We are letting it grow in all its Shih Tzu glory, and he gets a professional groom every month. PLEASE NOTE: his hair will grow indefinitely, and he will need professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. Only apply if you understand the additional maintenance and cost that these dear hair-not-fur souls need and are willing to commit to life for such care. Get to Know Teddy: Because of his past, Teddy needs an adopter that is willing to give him space and time to get settled into this new life he's been given. He is doing well in his foster home, and he is now seeking attention from them after weeks of rest after his surgeries. Due to the extreme neglect in his past, he had to have an eye removed from untreated dry eye. His sight is minimal out of his other eye, and he navigates well through sound and smell. If Teddy needs to eat or needs something from you, he will let you know with his cute bark. He loves to go outside, and he is beginning to learn how to walk on a leash! Teddy was recently neutered and received a compete dental cleaning and some tooth extractions. He's all up to date on his vaccines. His bloodwork is good. He's ready to go! Ideal Home: Snoopy needs an experienced dog parent who has the empathy to understand what trauma he endured in his past. He is so darling and sweet. He so wants to connect with his people. You will just need to give him time in order for this to happen. He is a laidback gent with a gentle soul and a lot of love to give. He currently lives with other dogs and cats and lives peacefully with all of them. He tends to hang out by himself and sometimes with the quieter, older dogs in their home. Because of his gentleness, he would be okay around children who were taught how to respect and touch a dog under supervision. Loving teenagers would be ideal. We look forward to finding this gentleman the ideal family who is deserving of his gentleness. He's ready for his new life! Will it be with you?

Sir Hadley’s Backstory: Sir Hadley was brought into a partnering animal control facility, matted and neglected. His hair was so dirty and matted on his face that he could not see. Animal Saints was asked to help pull him to safety during the overcapacity issues in their facility. It is an honor to help Sir Hadley in his second chance and to find his lifetime family! Get to Know Sir Hadley: Age: approximately 8 (range of 6-8 given by most recent veterinarian) Weight: 16 pounds Neutered: yes Heart worm test: negative Dewormer: yes Fecal exam: negative Bloodwork: normal ranges overall - Very slight elevations in a few which are indicative of dehydration from recent rescue transport (bloodwork taken upon arrival to hospital). Personality: Hadley is gentle and sweet. He takes everything in stride and gets along with everyone. He is currently living with several dogs, and he enjoys everyone. Cats, too. PLEASE NOTE: his hair will grow indefinitely, and he will need professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. Only apply if you understand the additional maintenance and cost that these dear hair-not-fur souls need and are willing to commit to life for such care. Ideal Home: Sir Hadley is easygoing, but he is still catching his breath from the neglect he endured before Animal Saints pulled him to safety. He needs a quieter and gentler home. He is smart and inquisitive. He is laidback, but he needs someone wiling to keep his curiosity going with puzzles and training, This will allow him to flourish and give him what he needs. For Sir Hadley’s adoption, we require basic foundational skills in-person training with a certified positive reinforcement trainer in your area. This is to begin right after adoption to set Hadley and his new family up for a successful transition. The classes are also SO much fun and are such a positive way to begin this new journey in life with your new Animal Saint. People who work from home or are retired are an ideal match for dear Hadley. Story
Samuel Albert’s Backstory: Samuel Albert was dropped off at an overcapacity animal control facility. Our rescue was asked to help, and we pulled him to safety to give him the second chance he deserves! Get to Know Samuel Albert: Have you ever met a dog who makes your heart melt with love and empathy for them? This was how we reacted to Samuel Albert when we first met him. We were greeted with a hug and a kiss on the cheek while we carried him around in the garden. Samuel is a sweet and sensitive soul who takes everything in stride. We can tell he’s been and seen a LOT. Yet, he’s so ready to love and receive attention. His blend of breeds is stunning and one-of-a-kind. We have asked veterinarians what they see, and everyone see something a little different. Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Havanese, Affenpinscher, Terrier... what do you see? If you only see love at first sight, then you need to apply because this dear boy could be the match you're looking for! PLEASE NOTE: his hair will grow indefinitely, and he will need professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. Only apply if you understand the additional maintenance and cost that these dear hair-not-fur souls need and are willing to commit to life for such care. Age: approximately 7-9 Weight: 13.5 Neutered: yes Heartworm: negative Fecal exam: negative Bloodwork: normal range with very slight elevations in a couple of numbers, most likely due to being dehydrated upon arrival to hospital. This can be viewed upon request. Flea and tick treatment: yes Vaccines: rabies, distemper, bordetella Dental: yes — cleaning and tooth extractions Potty training — working on it and doing well During his complete wellness exam, our veterinarian detected a slight heart murmur at 1-2 out of 6. But she said he’s doing so well that no medication was prescribed. Samuel Albert has limited vision. He can still see, but it's not in normal range. He needs to be given a heads-up when approached with the sweetness of your voice as he sometimes does not see in certain light. It does not stop him from loving life and wanting to explore. With this in mind, a quieter home without young children is ideal for him. Samuel is slowly coming out of his shell after the trauma of being dropped off at a chaotic animal control facility with large barking dogs. Everyone who has gotten to know him says he’s very sweet. You need to let him approach you, and then he will trust. Ideal Home: Sammy gets along with most small dogs and cats. He’s met several and gets along with calmer and quiet dogs. He is not an alpha dog. In a group, he backs away and lets the more enthusiastic ones take center stage. He waits for interaction. His foster home says he’s a wonder in that way! Please keep in mind he does not care for puppy energy or children energy. It frightens him. Because of his gentleness, a quieter home is ideal. He wants attention from humans and needs it. Only a home with older children is ideal. Family who is home most of the time is ideal as Samuel Albert would very much like to be around trustworthy humans. If you plan to put Samuel in a crate, please do not apply. He needs the space and ability to be around his people! Does the gentleness and soulfulness of Samuel draw you in? It does us, too. This is why it’s such an honor to find him a permanent home, one that is committed to giving him a lifetime of love.

Story
Meet Pip and Smithy Pip and Smithy’s backstory: Pip and Smithy were dropped off at an overcapacity animal control facility. We were asked to get them out asap to help them. Their former owners did not have time for them anymore. The boys lived together and have an undeniable bond. They are ready for a committed family to love them both for the rest of their lives! Breed and Hair Notes: Both Pip and Smithy have hair that grows and not fur. They are both Poodle and Shih Tzu blends, though they look more much more than dogs. A blend of bear, monkey, human, and dog. They are so expressive and have such soulful looks and expressions. PLEASE NOTE: Their hair will grow indefinitely, and they will need professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. Only apply if you understand the additional maintenance and cost that these dear hair-not-fur souls need and are willing to commit to life for such care. Get to Know Pip and Smithy: Pip: age: 1 weight: 11 pounds neutered: yes rabies vaccine: yes distemper vaccine: yes bordetella vaccine: yes flea and tick prevention: yes heart worm test: yes, negative fecal test: yes, negative de-wormer treatment: yes potty trained: yes Smithy: age: 2-3 weight: 19 neutered: yes rabies vaccine: yes distemper vaccine: yes bordetella vaccine: yes flea and tick prevention: yes heart worm test: yes, negative fecal test: yes, negative de-wormer treatment: yes potty trained: yes They were both just professionally groomed, and the groomer said they were very well behaved and sweet. Adoption fee: $1,000 for the pair. This is to cover the expense of saving lives that our 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal rescue incurs. Pip and Smithy are a bonded pair, and they will only be adopted to a family who promises to keep them together. They have endured a lot of upset in their lives recently, and they clearly need one another to make it through. They are best friends. We all need best friends, and we owe it to them to keep them together for the rest of their lives. Their connection is a joy to see. They play together often. They are now here in our sanctuary, learning some basics in clicker training and how to walk on a leash. They adapt quickly and easily. Ideal Home: They are especially in need of connecting with a person and a family. They seek attention throughout the day and want to be by humans who are kind and loving to them. If you need to leave them for short periods of time, they can handle it because they have one another. Kongs and puzzles are key to keeping them happy while you leave the home. A family who works from home or is only away for short periods of time is ideal. At night, plan on sharing your sofa with them as you relax. They want to cuddle and sleep through the night with humans, too. In short, Pip and Smithy will flourish in a home where they can hang out with their people during the day and sleep near or with them at night. Pip and Smithy are young and full of life, though they are beyond the puppy energy stage -- a wonderful bonus! They will require a fenced-in yard for playing and running, a nearby small dog park, and/or someone who will give them daily walks. The rest of the time, expect them to be very laidback and nap while you're working. They would enjoy older and respectful children, too. If they sound like the sweetest pair, it’s because they are. You’ll have double the joy with these incredibly sweet and loving pair!
