Norman: Surprise! You Ordered a Miniature Poodle.Meet Norman. We were told he was Miniature Poodle, coming out of a puppy mill. So his foster went to meet transport, and when he came out of the crate, SURPRISE!We had received the Standard-ish Poodle upgrade! No additional shipping charges. No returns accepted.At about 7 years old and 32 pounds, Norman may not technically be the giant poodle you were expecting, but he has a BIG personality waiting to emerge.Norman spent about seven years in a puppy mill, where he was likely used as a breeding stud. So when he arrived in rescue, he had some catching up to do. Things most dogs take for granted, like people, toys, mirrors, being alone, figuring out what the heck a treat is, are all relatively new concepts to this handsome guy.And watching him discover the world is pretty darn wonderful.Norman is ever evolving. When he first arrived, he was understandably nervous and unsure. As he gets comfortable, his silly side comes out. He can be playful and happy, but he also knows how to settle down and chill. He sleeps peacefully in his crate next to the bed, enjoys lounging on the couch, and has even decided that beds with humans and other dogs are perfectly acceptable accommodations.He is still scared and unsure about people. Not in general. People can pass on the street and he is fine with it, but at the vet or the groomer, he freezes. It appears that people have not been kind to him in his life thus far. But once he is used to you and you are deemed "good", he is your ride or die.He's also discovering the joy of toys. Unfortunately, Norman has apparently interpreted “stuffed toy” as “stuffed toy that must be immediately assassinated.” He is a stuffy killer, so his future family will need to stick with hard toys and safe chews to keep his impressive destruction skills from becoming a gastrointestinal emergency.And then there are the mirrors. Norman LOVES himself. Not in a vain way. More in a “Sir, why is that handsome dog staring at me and why does he refuse to leave?” kind of way. He will literally stand there and talk to his reflection for extended periods of time, so his foster family has had to cover the mirrors.Norman is good with other dogs and currently lives with two female Mastiffs. He would do especially well with a confident, playful canine companion who can show him the ropes. After seven years in a puppy mill, nobody taught Norman how to properly “dog,” and a good dog friend could be a wonderful teacher.He's also doing well with cats. His foster home's cats have had multiple nose to nose encounters with him, and Norman responds with curiosity and a wagging tail, not chasing or predatory behavior.He's good on leash and has already shown us that the big world isn't nearly as scary as he once thought. On a mile long walk along a busy bike path, Norman was completely non-reactive to bikes, runners, cars and motorcycles. That's a pretty impressive accomplishment for a guy who is still learning that the world is a safe place.But Norman does have one important request for his future family: please don't leave him alone all day. He doesn't like being alone and will let you know about it. With time, he does settle, but the initial howling, whining and barking can last a while. For that reason, no apartments or homes with shared walls, please. A family that is home more often than not would be ideal.Once Norman trusts you, we suspect you've got yourself a ride-or-die kind of dog. Road trips? Yes. Hiking? Absolutely. Beer garden patio? Norman would like to review the menu. Sitting beside you on the couch while you do absolutely nothing? Also excellent.He's still working on basic commands and isn't terribly treat motivated yet, so formal training is a work in progress. But he's smart, responsive and learning more every day. He is housebroken on a schedule, and will alert to go outside, but may need to be reminded to finish his business outside. He starts, gets excited, and forgets to finish. River is a Standard Poodle. He can be a little shy at first but is very sweet once he warms up. He is dad to the doodle pups that came to Wisconsin in June. He is done being a dad and ready to be spoiled and loved in a family of his own. He is currently housed with other dogs and kids. Odin is a loving, loyal companion who will be your devoted shadow. He's a true velcro dog who loves very hard. Odin is a large poodle Rottie X that came out this way from California years ago. His owner was not able to give him the proper care and enrichment he needed because of her work schedule and so she left him in our care. We came to know him as a bouncy, sweet, at times protective and even complex boy. He cherishes outdoor adventures, going on long walks, and he's well-trained with great leash manners. We have him crate-trained, potty-trained, good in the car, enjoys playing with his dog pals, and does well in boarding. Odin is a pretty neat and easy dog in the home aside from his tendency to resource guard some things such as couches/beds and high value items. We have spent many hours working with him and believe he is in a great behavioral place to find a home. Odin is very selective with strangers and is a bite risk towards unsuspecting people that push him past his comfort zone. He has undergone training to make him safer around others and has no problem wearing a basket muzzle when socializing or out in public. He has very good leash manners and won't go out of his way to bother any passersby. Odin will be an amazing best friend for a single man or woman, even a couple that can keep up with his rules and boundaries. He CANNOT live with little children and CANNOT live with cats. Odin would do fine with a playful female dog and can have one as a housemate. He may even enjoy a passive playful male. Odin will be protective of his territory and his people. Due to that drive in his nature he is part of our behavioral dog post adoption support program. About Me: Name: Waverly Breed (or best guess): Poodle or Doodle Approximate Age: 6 yr Gender: Female Approximate Weight: 25 lb Adoption Fee: $495 Requirements: Patient family, fenced yard preferred  Why In Rescue: puppy mill survivor Profile:  Foster Update - Waverly has been in a foster home learning to walk on a leash and doing great with her house/potty training.  Her foster says she is super sweet and very smart! Waverly came from a commercial breeder/puppy farmer who was no longer going to use her for breeding.  She is a little shy but okay with being handled.  She needs work on walking on a leash, so needs a fenced yard for her safety .  She gets along with other dogs, but will likely do fine as an only dog as well.  If you have the patience to help her learn about living the good life as a loved pet, she may be the perfect girl for you! Dogs from commercial breeders are generally undersocialized (often very scared/shy/skittish) and probably never lived in a house.  They will need to learn things like how to walk on a leash, go up stairs, and what things like a television are.  They need a patient adopter who will give them the time they need to adjust and to learn to trust people.  Every baby step forward needs to be celebrated, and the dog needs to be accepted for who they are at each step.  Some dogs can adjust quickly and learn how to be a loved pet pretty easily.  Others can take a long time to even be comfortable with things like walking through the house and being in the same room as a person.  No matter how far and how fast the breeder dogs progress, they are wonderful dogs and deserve a great home after their life on the puppy farm.  A fence or at least a secure fenced in potty area is highly recommended for the dog's safety, and may be required for some dogs.  Another small dog in the house can also help many former breeders adjust faster to life in a home, and also may be required in some cases.  We do put the needs of the dog's first, so it is nothing personal if we determine a particular dog isn't suitable for your specific home and living situation.
