Story
Meet Max! A wise and wonderful twelve-year-old Poodle mix currently living in Ayer, MA, whose heart is as soft as his charcoal-dusted black coat. Max is a medium-sized gentleman, weighing in at 40 pounds, and he’s got one soulful eye that sees straight into your heart—and probably your snack bag, too! Max is the definition of a devoted companion. His world revolves around his people, and he’s happiest when he’s close—whether it's trotting by your side on a peaceful walk, snoozing nearby while you work, or simply following you from room to room. Max isn’t just a velcro dog—he’s a full-on shadow with a heartbeat. Because Max forms deep bonds, he struggles when left alone. His separation anxiety is very real and not just a bit of whining. When his people leave, Max becomes stressed and unsettled. At first, he’ll pace and vocalize his concern with soft whining and barking. If left for longer stretches, this turns into digging or chewing at doors and crates in a determined effort to find his way back to his loved ones. He doesn’t mean harm—his heart just hurts when he’s not near his favorite human. This anxiety can also make Max reactive in certain situations. When feeling stressed or unsure, he may bark, growl, or charge at other dogs or unfamiliar people, especially if they approach him or his person too quickly. It’s his way of saying, “I’m scared and overwhelmed,” not “I’m aggressive.” Max is working on this through consistency, calm guidance, and plenty of reassurance. A quiet home with an experienced caregiver who understands reactivity and is comfortable using positive reinforcement will be key in helping him feel safe and confident. Max knows a long list of commands and thrives with structure, routine, and predictability. He’s neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. He requires a low-fat diet to manage chronic pancreatitis and receives care for hypothyroidism. Max is seeking a home where he can be the one-and-only pet, without young children or a revolving door of visitors. If you’re someone who’s home often or can include Max in your daily routine, he’ll repay you with unwavering loyalty and affection! Could Max be the one to fill your life with quiet companionship and devoted love? Reach out to meet him at adopt@joyfulpets.com!

Our on-site trainers support the positive growth of our dogs and we enjoy seeing their progress!    Our commitment to comprehensive medical care sets us apart. We've received glowing feedback from veterinarians who commend our dedication to ensuring the health and well-being of every animal in our care with treatments that often go above and beyond.   Our adoption fees reflect the extensive care and resources that go into each animal we save. The adoption fee is a donation to the mission and goes far beyond getting a fully vetted pet.    The rescue’s hard costs alone (excluding transport) for a healthy dog to go through our program typically range between $412 to $859, which includes boarding, food, medications, vaccines, and spay/neuter. For heartworm-positive dogs, hard costs are upwards of $1,368. Additionally, dogs requiring extended boarding, extra training, or extra medical care—such as dental work, vision care, or orthopedic care—can lead to expenses running into the thousands. Also, included in the adoption fee are costs to cover transport up to the Pacific Northwest or East Coast. Transport is a significant additional expense to the rescue.  While adoption fees help cover part of these expenses, we want to emphasize that the rescue does not receive government funding and must fundraise to offset the remaining expense balance which ranges $100-1,000++ per animal on these direct costs.   It doesn’t stop there! Our adopters also receive these SPECIAL PERKS:   Extensive behavioral testing and information from trainers on our staff to ensure the perfect fit for your family  Discounts on Embark DNA test kit- $30 off of Breed ID test & $50 off of Breed ID plus Health test 30 day trial of pet insurance with Trupanion A free private online dog training session with GoodPup, plus low pricing for future sessions  70% off of your first order of Fetch, a delicious PNW based fresh dog meatballs subscription Coupons for a fun visit to Petco 20% off of Dr. Cuddles pet first aid and hygiene solutions Discounted heartworm, flea prevention, and monthly dewormer  Access to our exclusive FB Adopters page, where you can network for play dates, resources, and connect with other adopters that share their passion for their adopted pup!   Did you know that the Greater Houston area faces some of the highest stray and overpopulation rates in the nation? We are a non profit charity. Our goal is simple— to reduce the homeless pet population through community outreach, free spay and neuter services, and by rescuing animals from the streets or overcrowded shelters where euthanasia due to lack of space is often the only option. Story
MeShell MaBelle is a story of quiet endurance and beautiful transformation. At three years old and 60 pounds, this striking black Standard Poodle embodies everything people love about the breed — intelligence, sensitivity, and a deep emotional awareness of her people. For much of her early life, MeShell tried to be content with limited interaction and long hours alone. While she loved her family, the lack of stimulation and extended crate confinement placed stress on her gentle system, eventually leading to a diagnosis of Addison’s Disease — a condition that is very manageable, especially in a home built on routine, consistency, and love. Everything changed when MeShell entered foster care. Surrounded for the first time by open skies, fresh air, and patient guidance, she began discovering what life could be. On a lively farm filled with dogs of all sizes, curious cats, horses, donkeys, and even pigs, MeShell absorbed new experiences with quiet determination. She learned how to play, how to relax in the presence of others, and how to take joy in simple freedoms — running through tall grass, resting near trusted humans, and curling up beside a canine companion at the end of the day. Today, MeShell is a happy, affectionate, and energetic girl who thrives on companionship and gentle structure. She is deeply people-oriented and does best when she is included, seen, and emotionally connected to her humans. Her care needs are straightforward: a daily pill, a once-monthly injection, and a lifelong promise that she will never again be overlooked. What she gives in return is immeasurable — loyalty, intelligence, and a love that feels steady, intentional, and profoundly sincere. MeShell MaBelle is ready to leave her past behind and step fully into a future where she is cherished as both a companion and a soul. If you feel a pull toward a dog who has known hardship but still offers her whole heart, she may be the one you’ve been waiting for. To learn more about adopting MeShell, please email Critter Cavalry Rescue at ccrnewengland@gmail.com and include your location when inquiring. Adoptions are available to Tennessee residents, with regular transport offered to families in the northeastern states. PLEASE NOTE:   Our dogs and cats are fostered in Tennessee and can transport weekly up to the Northeast region.  Request an application and learn more about Critter Cavalry at https://www.crittercavalry.com/adoption.February 4, 2026, 1:44 pm
