If happiness could wag its tail, we'd be pretty sure it would look exactly like Susie Q. This girl wakes up every morning like she's just won the lottery. Everything is exciting, everyone is her friend, and life is simply too much fun not to enjoy. Whether she's happily trotting around with those adorable floppy ears swinging from side to side, tossing a tennis ball around all by herself, or wagging her whole body because you looked in her direction, Susie Q has the kind of joy that's impossible not to catch. Her foster says his favorite thing about her is simply how happy she is all the time, and honestly, we couldn't agree more. As with any rescue dog, her exact breed is always a mystery, but our best guess is some combination of Dachshund, Basset Hound, Schnauzer... and who knows what else. Whatever her genetics are, they absolutely nailed it. She has a long little body like a Dachshund, short Basset legs, floppy Bloodhound ears that sway with every step, and the cutest scruffy little face that always seems to be smiling. One of our favorite things about Susie Q is that she truly is the best of both worlds. She's playful enough to keep life fun but settles down beautifully when it's time to relax. She'd happily join you for a walk around the neighborhood, a trip to a dog-friendly patio, or a game of fetch in the backyard, and afterward she'll be more than content curling up beside you for some well-earned cuddles. She's the kind of dog that's always ready to say yes when adventure calls, but she's just as happy spending a quiet evening at home with her people. If there happens to be a tennis ball involved, even better. Susie Q absolutely loves toys, especially balls, and has even figured out how to entertain herself by tossing one into the air and chasing after it all on her own. It's every bit as adorable as it sounds. She loves playing fetch and could happily spend time chasing a ball around the yard before proudly bringing it back to do it all over again. She's also one smart cookie. Susie Q already knows how to sit, absolutely loves treats, and is eager to please. Like any young dog, she's still polishing up some of her manners. Sometimes she gets so excited that she jumps up to say hello, she can get a little mouthy during play, and she's still learning that walks aren't supposed to be a race to investigate every exciting thing she sees. Lizards happen to be at the top of that list. The good news is she's incredibly food motivated and thrives with consistency, structure, and routine, so we think she's going to continue learning quickly. Susie Q is dog friendly and would absolutely love a playful canine buddy. She's currently fostered with an older Chihuahua who would much rather enjoy retirement than chase toys, and while Susie Q would love nothing more than to convince her new friend to play, she's respectful when the answer is no. Since her foster's dog isn't interested in games, he's arranged playdates with the neighbor's large dog instead, and they have an absolute blast together. The two of them spend their time happily running around the yard playing chase until they're both worn out. Whether she has another playful dog in the home or gets to soak up all the attention herself, we think she'll do great. Susie also met our house cat Biggie and did well around him. She did seem like the type that is going to want to play with a cat but we do not know if she has ever lived in a home before with a cat and this was our first time seeing her with a cat. Biggie seemed comfortable around her and when he started wrestling with her and play biting her, she did not react. If you have a cat in the home, we can arrange for her to have a sleepover with a cat upon request. Just let us know! She's fully potty trained and settled into her foster home's routine within just a day or two. She's also crate trained and sleeps quietly through the night in her kennel. She may let out a few little protests when she first goes into her crate, but she settles quickly and relaxes. Her foster has done a wonderful job giving her structure with morning walks, breakfast, midday potty breaks, evening playtime, and bedtime, and Susie Q has absolutely thrived with the consistency. We think Susie Q would be happiest in a home with a backyard where she can stretch those adorable little legs, play fetch, and get the occasional zoomies out. That said, her foster also believes she has the potential to do well in an apartment as long as she's getting regular exercise and plenty of opportunities to burn off some energy. A semi-active family that enjoys taking their dog along for everyday adventures would be a wonderful fit for her.
