Charlie is a typical Akbash/Pyr mix, who is head strong and protective of his person. He is fully vetted, heartworm negative and microchipped. Charlie does well with the smaller dogs in the current foster home, though seems unsure of large dogs. He very much enjoys "working"...having something to do. Though we do not allow him to be an outdoor dog, he very much enjoys his time in the yard/sun. Charlie loves going for walks, but is often scared of other unknown big dogs. Adoption Fee: $475 When available, all animals are fixed in accordance with Colorado law, up to date on vaccines (may need boosters), and microchipped! What we know: Came to CPR from Española Humane Shelter in New Mexico with his sister in May 2026 at 3 months old and was adopted. Returned in August 2026 due to reported food aggression with the other dog and people in the household. Louie will need a family who understands this behavior and is willing to work through it with him, as he is still at an age where this can be brought to a more manageable level, if not resolved. FOSTER UPDATE: After over a week of exemplary puppy behavior on Louie's part, we invited our 3-year-old granddog over for a visit (NOT at mealtime) to see how the two dogs got along. They were okay with each other until the granddog sniffed at the kibble container, which set off a trigger in Louie who attacked her. We removed the kibble to another room, but Louie attacked her again when she walked near where the kibble had previously been. We had to separate the dogs and the visit came to an end. From this experience I learned that Louie's resource guarding is there, even if he seems perfectly calm and gentle otherwise. The CPR guidelines for him to be in a home with no other dogs and no children under 10 years of age seem wise. Maybe consulting a dog trainer would be a good idea too. He is a REALLY GOOD dog in other respects, and he deserves to be in a situation where he can show his best self all the time. From the foster: Louie is such a big puppy that it's hard to remember he's only 6 months old and the world is largely still new to him. He's past his puppy chewing stage, but likes to play with toys. He knows how to Sit, Lie Down, and Shake. He's potty trained - he had a few accidents the first day when he was getting acclimated but none since - and he sleeps through the night on the foot of our bed. He's affectionate, gentle and curious. He likes to keep his people in sight. He has a deep voice and barks at unfamiliar noises and people walking past the house (with or without dogs). Initially he was quite interested in our caged bird, but he's gotten used to the bird's presence so they're coexisting peaceably. We're working to help him get over being anxious when we leave him. (We haven't crated him, although I think he was crate trained in his earlier home.) He is overjoyed when we return. He's been a good walker and sniffer, not pulling much, and he has greeted dogs and people respectfully - sometimes hesitantly - both in the neighborhood and at the dog park (where we've kept him on leash). We haven't seen any signs of the food aggression for which he was returned, but in this house there's noone competing to eat the kibble. I pat him while he's eating and put my hand near his bowl and it doesn't seem to bother him. Louie is a sweet big handsome puppy boy, with a lot to love.
