Story
History: Our Out of the Cold Rescue Effort was a great success in welcoming over 180+ animals to rescue from rural areas in North Dakota before the cold set in. These animals are all so deserving and thankful to get a second chance in finding a forever home of their own! A Note from the Foster: Greetings! If you are a Greek Mythology fan you may have heard of my namesake; Boreas, the god of the north wind. My name was chosen for me because I was part of the OOTC (Out of the Cold) rescue effort that happens each November to help save dogs like me from spending the frigid winter fending for ourselves. Now that I have explained my name, I want to tell you about me! I am a sweet, big boy who is still learning how big I really am. I am also working on basic manners because no one ever taught me how to be the best boy until I came to rescue. I love to run and play around the yard with the other dogs in my foster home. Chasing each other around the yard is fun. I love to chase the ball if you throw it, but the concept of picking it up and bringing it back is completely lost to me (for now). So many things to learn! It is clear that I have not had a lot of exposure to things like leashes or being in a home. I am working really hard on learning how to be a good boy. My foster momma says it's a good thing I am adorable. I will need a family that can help me continue to learn how to be the best boy. Maybe that's you?

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Meet Kittee! Don't let her stunning Akita looks fool you, Kittee isn't your typical aloof Akita – she's an extra-friendly sweetheart! This magnificent girl is a strong, powerful breed, and while she'd never use her strength against you, she thrives with an understanding owner who can provide confident direction. She's got an independent, stubborn streak, but it's all part of her charm! At heart, Kittee is still a playful puppy. Her favorite game? Fetch with herself! You'll often find her joyfully tossing her toys around. When it's time for bed, Kittee is a clean kennel keeper, though she might put on the breaks a little when first going in. She absolutely adores outdoor adventures, whether it's exploring with you or enjoying some independent sniff time. Kittee is a cuddly girl, especially after a good romp. She treats everyone like her best friend, greeting them with an open heart. Her bouncy playstyle is contagious, especially when she’s chasing tennis balls and rope toys – just don’t expect a perfect retrieve every time! If you're ready for a strong, loving, and slightly goofy companion, Kittee is eager to meet her forever family! Kittee will need to be the only dog in the home or adopted into a home with a submissive, neutered male dog.   Kittee came into rescue with swelling in her leg, and after veterinary evaluation and cytology, she’s been diagnosed with a sarcoma with high suspicion of osteosarcoma. Because of this diagnosis, Kittee will be available as a hospice adoption. Our goal with hospice adoptions is to give animals like Kittee the chance to live in loving family homes, surrounded by care and comfort, for however much time they have left rather than staying in rescue. For full transparency: there is no true cure for osteosarcoma. The typical recommendation is amputation of the affected leg with radiation or chemotherapy. Without treatment, average life expectancy is 4–6 months; with treatment it may be extended up to two years. Because Kittee is a young, large dog, we’ve decided not to put her through the pain and recovery of amputation, but instead focus on her comfort and quality of life. She is currently on pain medication to help keep her comfortable and mobile, and we’ll continue to monitor her needs closely.   Kittee is from a local impound. If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract. To learn more about Ruff Start’s adoption process and the care our foster animals receive, please visit our How to Adopt page. If you are unable to adopt but want to help this animal and others in our care, you can donate   to support the medical and veterinary needs of all Ruff Start Rescue animals.   Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.December 2, 2025, 4:54 pm

Story
Hi! I'm Polar Vortex.  I am a lovable, stubborn, energetic pup around 3-4 years old! True I am a big puppy and I need lots of guidance and training to ensure that I am set up for success in my life. Where I am staying currently there are no toys, human food or treats allowed as I haven't fully learned how to share. I love playing with the resident dogs. Speaking of the resident dogs I am with, I LOVE PLAYING ROUGH with them. I love to raise my big strong paw and give a smack to get the wrestling match started! I am a stereotypical Malamute in that respect. My foster mom says that it comes with Malamute territory and with being a puppy. I know how to kennel up, and I have been allowed to free roam when the humans leave. I didn’t cause trouble either way while the humans were away. I do eat my meals in the kennel so I can eat in peace, again not a fan of sharing... yet. I am a very smart, yet stubborn. I do not care for car rides at the moment. I will get into the car if and when I choose. My foster mommy is working on enticing me with treats to get into the car. I will admit, it is starting to work. I am still a puppy who wants to play. I am eager to learn the skills though and once I have them my foster mom says I will be a wonderful companion. Ooooh, and I almost forgot, I take treats very nice, you hardly know I am grabbing the treat from your hand. I am almost fully potty trained! My foster mommy also calls me her “little” velcro puppy. I want to make sure she is still home so I follow her everywhere. I really like sleeping with her at night on the big soft bed. She finds it funny that I currently don’t jump onto the couches, but I have no issue sleeping on the big soft bed with her at night. Who knows, maybe I will surprise everyone and start jumping onto the couches as I now understand the pleasures of sleeping on a human bed.  Adoption fee includes: Full veterinary exam, Alter, Prepaid microchip, Dewormed, Rabies vaccine (if age appropriate), Distemper combo vaccine(s) appropriate to age, Bordetella vaccine, 4DX (over 6 months of age), Flea/tick and heartworm preventative while in rescue. Adoption fee: $475.00 Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.December 5, 2025, 10:35 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. //   Find our applications at www.midwestanimalrescue.orgAdoption Fee $400 plus tax Sweetie is a spunky, independent, sweet loving girl who is going to make a great companion! Meet Sweetie!AKA Presley is a bright, energetic, and athletic young dog who’s ready to bring fun and excitement to an active forever home. She’s incredibly smart—she’s already mastered every puzzle toy she’s been given, yet still lights up with excitement when she sees them. Sweetie is housebroken and walks well on a leash, though she could benefit from some continued training, especially with recall. Luckily, she’s a quick learner and highly responsive to direction, making her a great candidate for obedience classes or agility training. She thrives on activity and would do best in a home that can offer her plenty of daily mental and physical stimulation. Apartment living isn’t the right fit for Sweetie due to her energy needs—she’d love a yard or easy access to outdoor adventures. Sweetie’s favorite activities include going for walks, chasing squirrels in the backyard, and making friends (both canine and human!) at the dog park. She's very dog-friendly and loves socializing. She’s not overly vocal but will bark to alert you when someone’s at the door or when she needs to go outside. Sweetie has brought endless joy and laughter to her foster home, and now she’s ready to do the same for her forever family. If you're looking for a loving, lively, and loyal companion, Sweetie might just be your perfect match!
