Story
Hello! I came to the shelter as a stray. The kind people that found me were able to give me a bath with no issues (I was a little stinky). They report that I am shy about cars and stairs, but they were able to pick me up and carry me with no issues (of course I`m a big dog so I was heavy). I`m friendly and I love playing and exploring. I was found with another dog and we got along well, but I`ll definitely need slow, planned, monitored introductions to any other dogs in a new home. It is unknown how I might behave around cats. Visit this page for more information about properly introducing pets.Like many dogs in NC, I am currently heartworm positive, but don`t worry - OCAS will cover the cost of my treatment. Staff members at the shelter can give you more information about that if you are interested in adopting me.In North Carolina, it`s unfortunately common to see many dogs that are infected with heartworms (they are transmitted by mosquito bites). Heartworm disease may cause severe lung disease, heart failure, or other organ damage in dogs. It`s usually fatal if left untreated. Heartworm treatment is costly. With your support, OCAS can help more dogs with this disease - resulting in healthier dogs that are even more likely to get adopted. Please consider donating to our GoFundMe campaign.

Story
Meet Hopper. Hopper is a 1 year, 7 month old, 66-pound sweetheart who captures hearts almost instantly. He is a tripod after having a damaged leg amputated, and he has adapted incredibly well. His mobility and confidence are impressive, and his three-legged status does not slow him down. He is easy to get out of the kennel, eager but manageable when leashing up, and appears to be housetrained. Hopper walks nicely on leash, especially for a young dog of his size, and moves comfortably and confidently. He truly enjoys being outside and thrives when he has space to explore and move. Hopper enjoys car rides and is excited to load up, though he may need a little help getting into taller vehicles. He can be vocal at first but settles with time, particularly when given something appropriate to chew on. He loves toys, enjoys playing fetch, and is very treat motivated. Hopper takes treats gently, knows “sit” reliably, and may take a moment to adjust his footing before sitting. People are one of Hopper’s favorite things. He is affectionate, social, and leans in for attention. He happily accepts pets from new people and has done well meeting older children. He enjoys being close to his people and clearly values human connection. Around other dogs, Hopper displays loose body language and wagging, though he can be vocal at times and may bark out of excitement or to express himself. In general, he is a bit of a talker and has an opinionated, grumbly way of communicating that many people find endearing. Bath time is not Hopper’s favorite activity, likely due to difficulty maintaining footing in a slippery tub, so gentle handling and positive experiences will be important for grooming routines. Hopper is a resilient, loving, and playful young dog with a big personality and an even bigger heart. He is ready for a home that will appreciate his affectionate nature, his joyful energy, and his unique way of communicating with the people he loves. As always, we strongly recommend that resident dogs meet any new potential canine family members. If bringing a resident dog for a dog to dog test, please bring proof of Rabies, DHPP, and Bordetella vaccines. To meet your new pet, come to Guilford County Animal Services between 12 and 4 any day except Tuesday!

Story
Shadow is a gentle giant. She is a senior dog that really needs more love than she's able to receive right now. She was adopted about sixish years ago. Her ideal home would be one filled with love and attention. Despite her age, she still has energy, especially when someone starts getting excited around her. She's very passive and just wants to be in the same room as you as much as possible. She is reluctant to get into cars. She was found in a field, and I'm not sure if a car accident brought her there. She has a dog bed and dog food that the next forever home can have if they would like it!
