Story
Mara is a stunning 3-year-old American Bulldog mix who recently returned to our care—and she’s been her happy, friendly self ever since! The moment she saw familiar faces, her whole body lit up. She’s been soaking up affection from staff and reminding everyone just how special she is. Mara was returned through no fault of her own. She has a high prey drive toward cats and small animals, which couldn’t be safely managed in her previous home. Because of this, Mara may need a cat-free home with no small animals. When it comes to dogs, Mara may do well with a canine companion given slow, supervised introductions. She enjoyed meeting our test dog here at the shelter, though thoughtful matching is important—especially with other dominant female dogs. This sweet girl is loving, social, and truly shines when given structure, consistency, and positive guidance. She’s smart, active, and will thrive with daily exercise and mental enrichment. Mara walks nicely on leash, and continued obedience training is highly recommended—not only to build her social skills, but also to strengthen the bond with her future family. A professional trainer who worked with Mara shared this: “She is the sweetest, softest dog on the planet. She’s extremely responsive to gentle vocal correction and truly loves positive reinforcement.” Mara can be a bit nervous at first, and may bark at strangers or other dogs, but with calm, confident guidance and proper introductions, she does wonderfully. Because of this, we believe Mara would do best in a home (not an apartment) with more space and a less busy environment to set her up for success. If you’re willing to offer patience, consistency, and love, Mara will reward you with unwavering loyalty, affection, and a truly special companionship. Could Mara be the one you’ve been waiting for? Story
Hi there, I’m Blizzard!I’m a friendly and affectionate boy, always happy to say hello and make new friends. Do you have any toys? I LOVE to play! I can be a bit mouthy at times, but I mean well—I just get really excited and playing with toys helps to keep my mouth busy. I’m looking for a family that’s interested in training and will help me work on things like barking at dogs when I’m on my leash and getting used to handling. Adopting me means endless love and companionship... I`m ready to be your new loyal friend!MY IDEAL HOME INVOLVES…CHILDREN: Yes, with respectful children who aren’t too fragile for my exuberant and sometimes mouthy behaviours.OTHER DOGS: Yes, I would love a playmate in the home! And what a great way for me to get out energy!CATS: No, I bark at cats and I don’t think your kitties would appreciate that.FIRST-TIME DOG OWNERS: Potentially, if you have some dog experience and interest in training.FENCED-IN YARD: Recommended for a safe space to run and burn energy.HOUSING ENVIRONMENT: No apartment buildings given I sometimes bark at dogs on leash.SOMEONE HOME MOST OF THE DAY: Not necessarily, though a home where I would be left for a full work day wouldn’t be the best match.SOME OTHER THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT ME…ACTIVITY LEVEL: Medium.HOUSE-TRAINED: YesIf you think I could be a good match for your home, click the “Adopt Me” button to apply!

Story
Lunatomiti was adopted as a youngster but has found his way back to the shelter due to his active behaviour and the owners limited time to help him. He has been in one of our foster homes with experience in training their pups and has proven to be a quick study. He has lots to do and other animals to play with so at the end of the day he loves to cuddle and rest. Are you ready for the story of these young one`s lives. In eight weeks, they have been to more homes, have had meds and been fed the best however, we do hope we made up for momma dog’s attention.Mom and Babies were doing well but when pups were about 2 weeks old, mom got mastitis and was quite ill with it. 2 days after the emergency visit and keeping cabbage compresses on her, only letting 6 pups suck on mom at a time the abscesses broke open and mom had 2 holes way bigger than toonies and very deep. Cleaning, flushing, and packing, we knew we needed to keep the wounds clean and we started supplementing the babies. During this time, the male dog in the house went for neuter and 2 days later came down with kennel cough. At 4 weeks, we started vaccinating, but realized Puppies, one by one taking sick and were diagnosed with mycoplasma (pneumonia). We moved them into other foster homes, by 3 or 4 and treated with 10 days of doxy, supplementing their feeding regime with formula and they started eating Royal Canin baby dog kibble almost immediately.Once they were better, we then started to get them vaccinated, spayed/neutered and they were very ready for adoption.Their breed Mom is American Bulldog Mix, Dad is Chocolate Lab, Boxerhttps://ws.petango.com/webservices/adoptablesearch/wsAdoptableAnimalDetails2.aspx?id=2000237681&css=&authkey=y1f3e5se6ktgqh23k5g6ql7ku8loa35g27b2kugpias7o6r5a2&PopUp=true

Story
HERE IN CANADA COME MEET HER My granny used to look at my pretty white coat and my soft brown eyes and tell me that I was the diamond in the coal mine. "Never worry, Raye," she'd say, "with a face that pretty there's always going to be a home for you!" I sure hope granny was right, cause boy oh boy! I could use a home about now. I'm looking forward to buckling down and excelling at doggy classes and hopefully making you so proud of me, that you'll never let me go! I need a home without children and without other dogs. Name: Rayse Weight: 60 lbs Age: 3 years Gender: Female Breed: American Bulldog mix Color: White/Brown Good With Adults: People selective Good With Kids: no Good With Other Dogs: Prefers to be the only dog Good With Cats: No, she has high prey drive Housebroken: Yes Crate trained: Yes Energy Level: Medium Can be handled/touched: Yes Barker: some, when she's scared Escape Artist: Yes Food Aggressive: With other dogs Walks on Leash: Pulls Rides well in car: Yes Destructive: no Needs a home with a yard: Yes Needs a home with another dog-Prefers to be the only dog Can live in an apartment: No. Needs a fenced in yard to play in. Foster comments: She barks when she's scared, but as we've been working on her sense of security and confidence, it's happening less and less. For introductions to new adult humans, it's best if it's done outside when she isn't startled by their arrival. She warms up very quickly and is very friendly and playful. Training Update: This girl has come so far in her training and learning to trust people, she is doing basic trainingright now with one of our trainers and is doing great!! Rayse is part of our dog walking group and everyone that takes her on adventures absolutely adore her. When she is in a home she has a few fears but with a patient adopter that will show her leadership she will do very well , Rayse loves to be praised for good behavior and really wants to please . This gir has overcome some really big obstacles in the past few months and is now ready for her happy ending . She would excel in a quite home with lots of love and walks ( she loves the water ) the beach is her favorite. She is on special food which is only 60.00 for a 25lb bag and she is worth it . This girl really deserves her happy tail ending . Come meet her and lets take her for walk and you will see what all of us see!!!

Story
Emmy Lou Lou Lou, In pink & blue blue blue, What shall we do do do? We need to find your forever family! Emmy Lou is an estimated 2 year old female English Bulldog mix who was found stray, and unclaimed at Animal Services. She is a compact 60lbs, lean, but strong. She is a very sensitive girl and wasn't showing well in the busy shelter environment, but in foster care, Emmy has showed us what a wonderful, silly, playful and affectionate girl she is! Emmy is the perfect mix of up for adventures, being goofy and playful, and couch potato. She is curious and expressive, but also has resting grumpy face and the most dramatic sighs. Emmy is obedient, smart and enjoys learning, but if she never learned any new skills she would probably still be an easy dog. Emmy Lou is generally pretty independent and low energy. She is a very typical English bulldog mix - lower energy, snuggly, gets cold easily but also overheats easily, brachycephalic, snores very loudly, and can be sensitive and particular about a few things! With her family, Emmy is very playful, enthusiastic, and zoomie for about 10 minutes, twice daily. She loves to snuggle, and is comfortable with manipulations, including paw cleaning, face wrinkle cleaning, general facial cleaning after eating/drinking, pets, and even baths. We're working on nail trims - Emmy does allow nail filling, but is dramatic after 1-2 nails are clipped. With strangers, Emmy is more reserved and defensive. She does not like strangers reaching for her without consent, and does not like feeling pressured- including from the vet! Emmy is very neutral with strangers as long as they don't put pressure on her - she's actually a wonderful patio pup, but does need to be advocated for so strangers don't suddenly reach for her face. Honestly, us too Emmy! People generally don't like strangers in their face either! Emmy warms up quickly with neutral interactions, and lots of treats! She will usually offer up her bum for bum rubs quickly, if people are respectful. With dogs, Emmy similarly does best with neutral introductions. She can be sensitive to dogs coming into her space too quickly, and prefers neutral walks and respectful space. She had done well in a very busy canicross setting with many excited dogs that were respectful of her space, and lives with 3 respectful foster brothers. We've observed that she can be a bit more of a bully to her anxious/sensitive middle aged foster brother, compared to her other 2 more confident foster brothers, however she takes redirection from her humans well and engages nicely with all 3, and has done well in a 3 dog house for the past 5 months. Emmy has not met cats. Emmy is curious/ eager to bully the chickens that live on the property with her, although they have always been safely fenced outside her reach. We have observed that Emmy Lou can be a resource guarder with other animals. In a multi-dog home, feedings are done separately, and Emmy gets her own space when playing with toys. Emmy can also guard dog beds, her space on the couch, and other objects she decides to claim- unexpected ones have included a sweater on the floor she decided to sit on, and a stick she decided was her toy. Her foster home is an experienced home with obedient and respectful dogs, so managing resources and redirecting Emmy when she starts showing warning signs has been easy for everyone to peacefully coexist, however potential adopters with other pets will have to be aware of subtle body language cues and have a management plan to prevent and conflicts around resource guarding. Emmy has done very well the past 4 months without any conflicts, and has made progress with her resource guarding, but her forever home should be aware and ready to manage this if they have a multi-pet home. For this reason, we are also looking for a home for Emmy without young kids. Emmy Lou is very food motivated, eager to please, and quite sensitive. She enjoys training and is easy to redirect with verbal cues, food, and tone of voice. Emmy is a sensitive girl, and any raised voices she perceives to be directed at her, and can get nervous. While Emmy is easy to manipulate when she's in her usual happy-go-lucky mood, if she is defensive she will not tolerate collar grabs or manipulations. Emmy is easy to coax out of a defensive state with verbal encouragement and treats, however her future adopters will have to be aware of how much pressure they are putting on her, and be mindful that she may interpret their actions differently than they may intend. Emmy is also sensitive about potty breaks in the dark, the cold, and loud noises. She is very good about bathroom breaks, and never has accidents inside (unless she is feeling very sick) but can sometimes refuse walks in the dark! Her safe space is in her crate in the house, and if she's feeling sensitive she will seek out her crate. Her other favourite spot is being on a pillow, on the couch, snuggled in a cozy throw blanket! Once she's comfortable and cozy, Emmy will snuggle and snore up a storm! Emmy is a silly, playful, and funny girl! She loves shaking and ripping up stuffy toes, loves her treat ball and other food toys, loves to squeak squeakers, and loves her single ingredient raw/dehydrated treats to chew up! She is low energy, but loves to run around with a toy when her people wake up in the morning, or when they come home from work. She quickly gets tired and loves to snuggle her people in her corner of the couch. She also loves to "supervise" in the kitchen, but will lay on her dog bed if asked to. She has a hilarious "resting grumpy face", but loves to give kisses to her people. MEDICAL DISCLAIMER! Emmy Lou had a severe adverse reaction to what is thought to be the general anesthetic during her routine spay surgery. She developed pyothorax and aspiration pneumonia, causing her to be hospitalized for 10 days on oxygen, an IV with antibiotics and fluids, and with a chest tube, which cost us over $13,000 for treatment with a 50% survival rate. English Bulldogs are not healthy dogs, and are genetically higher risk patients for routine surgeries and procedures. They are also dogs that will likely need dentals in their future. Due to Emmy's severe adverse reaction, any future dentals should be done at a veterinary dentist with a anesthesiologist present. English Bulldogs are also very sensitive to heat and breathing issues. Emmy Lou will very likely be more expensive to maintain good health than other breeds of rescue dogs, and she will need an adopter prepared to cover those costs for the duration of her lifetime, up to 15 years. Adopters should have previous experience, or have done thorough research into the health issues associated with English Bulldogs. Pet Insurance, or having a very large savings fund for emergencies is required. Taking a Pet First Aid course may also be an asset. Emmy Lou Summary: 2-3yo (f) English Bulldog mix -Good with dogs -Untested with cats -Older kids -Ignores strangers, happy to coexist, doesn't want strangers applying pressure. Happy to be affectionate on her own terms with strangers. -Crate trained -Good in car -Good on leash -Low energy, but very playful and gets short zoomies twice daily. -Non-vocal, but snores very loudly Personality: Silly, playful, joyful, snuggly, sensitive, funny, independent, defensive Behaviours: -Resource guards toys, food, space, furniture with other dogs. No observations of guarding with people. Easy to redirect, however management must be considered in multi-pet homes. -Sensitive and easily defensive: Emmy is a sensitive girl and any raised voices she thinks she is being yelled at, and if she is in a defensive state she can be nervous of collar grabs or sudden manipulations. Emmy is also defensive for some medical handling, especially by strangers. If she does not feel threatened, and with her people that she knows, Emmy is easy to manipulate and touch everywhere (we've even done rectal temperature checks without her being defensive). Health concerns: -Brachycephalic breed, take extreme caution in hot/humid weather, and restrict exercise when needed -Some allergies present in shelter, and post-hospitalization. Suspected chicken. Not extreme - did well on Performatin Lamb Kibble, and Blue Buffalo Salmon. -Had extreme response to spay surgery, may be sensitive to general anesthesia. Any future surgeries (dentals, etc.) will need to be done at a veterinary dentist with an anesthesia specialist. English bulldogs are notoriously unhealthy breeds. While Emmy Lou seems to have better breathing, and our vets think she's healthier than a typical English Bulldog, her future adopters should be prepared for budgeting for higher than average vet costs.
