Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Hi, my name is Kaia, and I came all the way from California.  While the west coast has all the sunshine,  I wanted to see how the mid-west farmers daughters lived.  All the dog volunteers at Last Hope say I am the sweetest little girl, I love to snuggle, and give tons of kisses.  I love to ride in the car and go for walks and I am super good at both! I am a very strong girl and need someone equally as strong.  I am a princess and love all the attention so I will need to be the only pet in the house.  I also need a home that has a privacy fence in case the neighbors have pets.  So if you always wished they all could be  California girls and wanted one of your own, then I am your girl.....  Kaia’s adoption fee is $250 and includes her spay, micro chip and current vaccinations. Last Hope requires that all of our animals be kept on year round heart worm preventative and as indoor dogs only. Our adoption process includes a background check, personal and vet reference checks as well as a home visit. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.May 4, 2024, 2:27 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Looking for a dog with a winning personality? Luckily you've found Oscar! He's a very social dog who would do best in a home where he can spend quality time with his people and at least one other accepting medium - large dog. Oscar enjoys a short daily walk and lots of plush and chew toys. He is a bit of a juggernaut who doesn't know it, and he greets everyone he meets with love and a wagging tail. He's fully house trained and nondestructive when home with his foster's other dogs unkenneled. People in the home should be teens and older due to his slightly oblivious nature and high food drive. Oscar does have some mild allergies, he' well managed with diet and seasonal allergy medication but may occasionally have some flare ups. Oscar's adoption fee is $250 and includes his neuter, microchip, current vaccinations and preventatives plus a free basic obedience class at Cedar Run Company in Hiawatha. Last Hope requires that all animals be kept as indoor pets only, be altered and current on vaccinations and preventatives. We look for adopters with current and/or former pets to have a demonstrated history of this. Our adoption process includes reference and background checks, a vet history check and a home visit. Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.May 4, 2024, 2:27 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Friendly and outgoing lady Daisy B is searching for a forever home, her dream home would have a woman and children in the family as this seems to be what she gravitates most towards when we introduce her to new people! We think Daisy is a "momma dog" at heart!  We've learned that Daisy is an escape artist, she can jump a shorter fence so would be best suited to a home with a secure fence. We don't think she intends to run away, we think she just wants to be wherever you are! She can also be dog selective, so might be best suited as the only dog in the home. She has so much love to share with her people, and it's clear she will fill your home with love and laughter.  Don't pass this goofy girl up! She loves to go for walks, and although she can be strong on the leash at first she does settle in quickly.   Daisy's adoption fee is $250 and includes her spy, microchip, current vaccinations/preventatives and free basic obedience course at Cedar Run Company in Hiawatha. Last Hope requires that all animals be kept as indoor pets only, be altered and current on vaccinations and preventatives. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Hi, my name is Jupiter and I can’t wait to meet you! I love everyone that comes into my home and I will make sure they know it with lots of kisses and snuggles. My favorite place to be is pressed up against someone’s leg so they don’t forget how much I love them. I am loyal to the core. The only thing I love more than my human friends is food. I love snacks and treats. I am a very smart girl and learn new commands very quickly if you offer me a treat for it. I take medicine every day which makes me happy because that means I get a piece of cheese or some yummy peanut butter to hide it in. De-lish!  Since I am a brilliant girl, I love brain puzzles that keep me from getting bored. Sometimes when I am bored I chew on things that aren’t mine, but I’m willing to learn not to. I like squishy rubber toys better than hard ones. I don’t like kennels but if you let me sleep in bed with you, you won’t hear an objection from me. I love people, but dogs make me nervous.  I would do best if I were your only furry bestie. Loud noises also frighten me like big trucks. I am very skilled at walking on a leash when given clear guidance. I had surgery on my back leg that left me with pins and a plate but you would never tell. My legs are nice and strong now and I love stretching them on daily walks. I am very polite and will let you wipe my feet off before coming inside our home if you ask for my “paw.” (I also know ‘sit,’ ‘lay down,’ ‘wait,’ and ‘off.’ Plus I’m excited to learn more if you bring the treat bag.)  Once I get inside I’m quite the couch potato, especially if you will sit with me. As I said, cuddling is my favorite.  I am quite the slobbery gal but that’s part of my charm! Just thinking about my dinner makes my mouth water, no chicken-based dog food please, it makes me itchy.  I know my natural brindle coat is beautiful but I am a fashionista that never says no to being dressed up. I love going on car rides so submit an application and let’s get cruising together on our lifelong adventure.  Jupiter’s adoption fee is $250 and includes her spay, microchip, current vaccinations and preventives plus a free basic obedience course at Cedar Run Company in Hiawatha. Jupiter has TPLO surgery in March 2022 to repair and stabilize a torn ACL. Last Hope requires that all animals be kept as indoor pets, be altered and current on vaccinations and preventives for consideration. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.DJ is such a happy dude! He had a tough start, he was brought into rescue heartworm positive so has just recently finished treatment to get him healthy. That treatment includes 12 weeks of strict kennel rest so this young guy is all ready to get out and stretch his legs and have some fun as your new adventure buddy! DJ rides great in a car, he makes friends with every single person he meets and while he has good young dog energy, he also calms down very quickly when it’s time to relax! DJ can be dog selective so might be best suited as the only animal in your home, he is not a match with cats. DJ is very people friendly and we think he’s be great with kids, he’s best paired with elementary aged or older. With DJ’s history of having heartworm as a young dog, it’s important that his owner understand the importance of providing year round heartworm preventatives and routine vet care!    DJ’s adoption fee is $250 and includes his neuter, microchip, current vaccinations and preventatives plus a free basic obedience course at Cedar Run Company in Hiawatha. Last Hope requires that all animals be kept as indoor pets only and be kept current on vaccinations and preventatives. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.HBC 4/11/23 - partially paralyzedMario joined Last Hope after he was hit by a car in the Davenport, Iowa area in early April 2023. Although Mario is partially paralyzed with very limited use of his back legs and hind end in general, he is a healthy and happy dog with lots of zest for life - he just needs to match himself with the right humans to help him on his journey! He is changing and improving every day, so the future is bright for him! Mario has blossomed in our care, we have learned lots about him including his love for sunbathing and being outside in general! He loves people of all ages, is friendly and curious with all animals, he enjoys a good bubble bath where he can soak his feet and then will gladly roll around on a shag carpet all day long.  Mario is also quite the foodie, and enjoys snacks such as watermelon, sardines and ice cubes!  Mario truly enjoys being where his family is, he does not want to be left behind or miss out on any of the action. He would not be an ideal match for someone that is gone long hours every day.  He is also not a fan of storms or fireworks, and does take calming medication for anticipated loud events like this.  Mario will be happy to be crated when he is left alone, and he does currently wear a diaper or belly band for elimination. Mario is an ideal candidate for a foster to adopt scenario, this will allow the rescue to continue to support Mario's new family as he settles in and they become familiar with his care.  Mario has had diagnostics and imaging,he is currently receiving ongoing chiropractic and acupuncture care with Dr Christine Woodford in the Cedar Rapids, IA area and takes anti-inflammatory pain medication daily. Mario will require care that includes lifting him for grooming/bathing (he is approx. 50 pounds), monitoring his skin for lesions/abrasions and cleaning/providing wound care as needed (this could be on his belly or underside from urine or moisture, or on his legs, feet and tail from dragging his hind end as he tries to walk.  Mario is starting to regain some feeling and muscle tone, he is not yet able to fully empty his bladder without assistance.  He can be manually expressed 3-4 times a day, and a more thorough expression can be done every other day to fully empty his bladder (this is something that is very easy to do and that we can easily train a person on!) Mario is a good candidate for a wheelchair or cart, this is something that Last Hope will provide for him! Mario's adoption fee is $250 and includes his current vaccinations, preventatives and a neuter surgery (this has not been performed yet, but will be scheduled and covered by Last Hope).  Mario is seeking an indoor only home, and an owner who has a history of having kept current/former pets altered, current on vaccinations and preventatives as indoor pets only.  Mario is seeking a home with 1 hour of Cedar Rapids, or with a family that is willing to transport him to this area for routine veterinary care as requested.   Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.May 4, 2024, 2:27 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Meet Stewie! This handsome fella was surrendered to us as his previous owner needed to move and wasn't able to take him with. Stewie is quite the charmer - he loves all the attention! His previous owner did not think he would get along well with cats or other small animals as he has a high prey drive. Since being at the shelter, we have been able to learn more about Stewie and his prey drive. We believe he would be most successful in a home as the only pet. He strives on people attention and affection - so Stewie would be the only pet you would need!! Before being at the shelter, he was used to being outdoors all the time in a kennel, so being inside where the AC is cool is quite a nice change for him! He is always ready to go for a walk and loves to help himself on the couch in the lobby - just so he knows he has an audience to please! Stewie loves to play fetch - and we have learned very quickly that once he has the ball... it's best to find another one to throw as he is very quick to latch onto the ball and not let go!  If you're interested in meeting this sweet boy, please fill out an adoption application and contact us to set up a meeting time. Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Meet Sugar! This sweetie came to us a few months ago as a local stray and after never being reclaimed, she has had her vet work all brought up-to-date. Upon her arrival at Safe Haven, it was evident that she was not feeling the greatest as several Safe Haven staff and volunteers were reporting continual diarrhea and vomiting in her kennel. When our veterinarian was able to examine Sugar, she knew something was not right - after further testing thru an ultrasound, it appeared that Sugar's intestines were not looking the way they should. After a several hour long 'exploratory surgery', our veterinarian was able to come to the conclusion that Sugar had some serious infection going on along with previous infectious material within her intestines and her very enlarged spleen was not keeping up with fighting off present infection. After overcoming a very intrusive surgery, Sugar was started on a very strict and special diet along with several medications to help her continue to fight off any infection that was still present internally. After receiving 24/7 around the clock care - Sugar may have gotten a little spoiled with all the attention from many Safe Haven volunteers... she learned to love attention & affection very quickly! :)Fast forward about two months, Sugar is doing really well! She has completed her rounds of antibiotics and medications have been finished. She has worked her way towards a 'normal' diet over the last several weeks and has been doing very well with this transition. Our veterinarian is ready for Sugar to be cleared and officially available for adoption! Sugar would do best in a home as an only pet, as she does not get along well with other dogs nor cats. Once you're able to meet Sugar - you will know, Sugar is the only pet you will need to fill your heart! Sugar is a very strong and active girl - always on the go!! She would love an active family with many long walks in her future - a fenced yard would be wonderful for this active girl as well! Interested in meeting or adopting Sugar? Please complete an online adoption application for her which can be found on our website at www.wesavepets.com. Once the application is submitted, a volunteer will be in contact with you shortly.Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.May 1, 2024, 4:35 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Nutmeg came to Safe Haven as a stray in March 2023. After never being reclaimed, she has been brought up-to-date on her vaccinations, examined by our Veterinarian, she tested negative for Heartworm, and has been started on monthly flea/tick & heartworm preventatives. Upon her arrival and once we were able to get to know her a little more,  it was appearant that she had a few medical concerns that needed further medical attention before being released for adoption to her new forever home. Nutmeg has occasional coughing or gag-like spells. Typically, these spells occur when she is pulling at the end of the leash while on her walks. They also have been known to occur when she gets excited about her surroundings - like other dogs nearby, walking past her kennel space, etc. Her initial veterinary exam was a visual exam. This visual exam did not reveal any causes for the coughing that was being occasionally noticed. Our veterinarian recommended further testing done by Frey Pet Hospital. At this appointment, Nutmeg had x-rays and imaging done. Nothing abnormal was seen through this imaging - so it was recommended to set up an appointment with Iowa State University for an upper and lower endoscopy and rhinescopy. These were done hoping to find answers or a cause for the coughing that Nutmeg experiences. These procedures at Iowa State University did not yield anything to be wrong anatomically. It was suggested that Nutmeg may be having some allergy-like effects to food and/or environmental allergies causing her coughing spells. She is currently receiving a special prescription diet food for her overall health.Nutmeg currently receives a couple different medications to help channel her behaviors while under our care at the shelter. The shelter environment is a stressful environment for many dogs including, Nutmeg. Nutmeg has been known to exhibit poor behaviors such as jumping, nipping & biting, excessive barking, and other alike behaviors since being under our care at Safe Haven. She can be a very exciteable girl who doesn't always understand her limits nor understand how to calm herself down safely. A home that has experience with resource guarding and reactiveness would lead Nutmeg to be most successful in a home setting. After getting to know Nutmeg more, we do believe a home without children would be best as Nutmeg can be somewhat unpredictable with her actions and children may cause her to be on-edge more so.If you feel you may be able to provide the home Nutmeg deserves, please complete an online adoption application as the first step of the meet & greet/adoption process. This online adoption application can be found on our website at www.wesavepets.com. Once the application has been submitted, a Safe Haven volunteer will be in contact to discuss the next steps.   Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.May 1, 2024, 4:35 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. 3/27/24 Update: Diego & Dora are a sibling-pair, very much bonded to one another. These two were adopted and found themselves a home in which they were well cared for for the past two years. Due to the change of living conditions and long working hours for their previous owner, they have been brought back to Safe Haven knowing that a well-suited home will be out there looking for them! Diego & Dora are quite the pair - they both have their own personalities, but compliment one another well. They enjoy their walks, and are both great on a leash. Since both are somewhat larger-sized dogs, a home with lots of room to explore and a yard to safely run and exercise would be great for these siblings. A fenced-in yard would be a huge bonus for them! Daily enrichment, exercise, and love (of course) are all part of their requests for their new home. Enrichment activities and daily exercise will not only help stimulant their busy minds, but will also help tire them out during "quiet time". Diego & Dora are looking for a home with no small pets - as they are both have a high prey drive that can be witnessed when seeing a rabbit, squirrels, and cats.    To ensure proper introductions, we would ask for an initial meet & greet to take place for any current dogs in a potential future home for these two. In order to set up a meet & greet, please complete an online adoption application found on our website at www.wesavepets.com. Once the application has been submitted a Safe Haven volunteer will be in contact to discuss the next steps.  Please read more below to learn about their initial arrival to Safe Haven in 2021: This wonderful sibling pair is looking for a new home together due to a disabling medical condition of their owner that left him unable to meet their needs. Dora and Diego were born on April 1, 2017. They are spayed/neutered, and up to date on vaccinations,  Heartworm testing and monthly preventative, and have been boarded at a local facility that gives them glowing reviews.  Dora and Diego are great dogs that enjoy meeting new people, even kiddos!  They also have been enjoying long walks by a local dog walker, who also takes them to the dog park.  They do get along with certain other dogs, but not all dogs, because Dora was once attacked by another dog.  So dog introductions need to be done carefully since they can understandly be a bit selective in their canine friends.   Their family also reports that Dora and Diego need a new home without cats, because both dogs do have a very high prey drive that is witnessed when they see a rabbit or squirrel - so their ideal home will not have any small pets.  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.May 1, 2024, 4:35 pm

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Doug came to Safe Haven as a stray found near I80, south of Ladora. He was never reclaimed - so he's found himself being loved on and cared for by our great team at Safe Haven until his forever home comes along!Doug has a great personality - he is quick to charm, but truly has loved everyone he has met so far. He enjoys his outside time going on several walks a day and more importantly, he LOVES snuggling up for rest time (even better if his person(s) snuggle up with him!) Getting a routine that works for Doug will be an important first step in his new home. Since we don't have any further history for this gentleman, we know it will be important to have a routine established to help with housetraining, sleep training, and much more in his new home. Doug is a smart boy - so we think he would learn a routine fairly quickly with patience and proper rewarding.Doug has not been with us long enough for any canine socialization within the shelter setting - as we get to know him more, we will update with any dog introduction happenings. If you're interested in meeting Doug and happen to already have a resident dog at home - we would ask for an initial meet & greet of the canines to take place to ensure proper introductions go well. These introductions can sometimes take several meetings before the dogs are comfortable or get a good 'feel' for one another and whether or not the placement will work out. Our goal is to help Doug find the best suited home possible - so please inquire about him soon! We don't think this goofy, sociable boy will last long! Please complete an online adoption application as the first step of the meeting process. You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Atlas is ready to be the king of your world! This handsome bridle boy is happiest when he's running and playing fetch.  Atlas is well trained and knows how to sit, shake, stay, lay down, wait, come, leave it and get up. Atlas is also muzzle trained, he prefers to wear this when meeting strangers or doing scary things like visiting the vet's office.  Atlas would thrive in an active home with adults only who are dog savvy and maintain a relatively quiet home life. We don't know all of his background, but we know that strangers in the home are scary to Atlas and he isn't sure if he's supposed to protect you from them or not!  Atlas loves to play, so another playful dog in the home would make for a perfect match! Atlas is kennel and potty trained, and also loves to give kisses. A 4-6 foot high fenced in yard would be a dream come true for ol' Atlas, here he could run and play to his hearts content and maybe learn some more impressive commands with a little help from his new family. If you are interested in learning more about Atlas please complete an adoption application for consideration at www.AdoptHope.org.  The adoption fee for Atlas is $250 and includes his neuter, microchip, current vaccinations and preventatives as well as a FREE obedience class through Cedar Run in Hiawatha.  Our adoption process includes reference and background checks, a vet check and home visit.  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.May 4, 2024, 2:27 pm

This sweet girl is ready and looking to fall in LOVE with a forever home! Currently residing in our Operations Director's office, she is a well behaved girly. She enjoys playing with toys - especially those of the squeak variety! She will play about in the yard, but is also content on nap time throughout the day. Lucia keeps her area nice and clean and listens nicely. While we have attempted visits with other dogs, Lucia let us know that she can be possessive of her toys/belongings, so we are looking for a home without other animals for her to ensure a stress-free environment.Stop on out and meet Lucia and ALLLLLL of our other cute tenants, we have plenty of new best furry friends waiting for their forever homes
