Story
Tammy is a young German Shepherd mix, under a year old, who is ready to discover what it truly means to be loved.
Tammy's journey began when a contact from a high-intake shelter reached out to Stray Haven for help. She was one of four young dogs brought into rescue after spending much of her life surviving on her own. When she arrived, she was severely underweight and covered in fleas and ticks. Thanks to good food, a safe home, and lots of love, she's slowly gaining weight and learning that life doesn't have to be about survival anymore.
Despite everything she's been through, Tammy has the sweetest heart. One of her favorite places to be is curled up next to her foster mom on the bed, often burrowing under the covers and tucking herself into the cutest little ball. It's amazing to see a dog who spent so much of her life outdoors discovering the comfort of a warm, safe home.
Tammy is still learning that the world is a safe place. Everyday things like the television, a ceiling fan, or something being dropped can startle her. She also isn't a fan of thunderstorms, which isn't surprising considering she likely had to weather many of them on her own. When she feels overwhelmed, she'll often retreat to her crate or under a piece of furniture, where she feels safe. Even so, she always greets her foster mom with a little tail wag, showing just how much she wants to trust.
She gets along well with the resident dog in her foster home. She may bark briefly when meeting new dogs, but she settles in nicely with proper introductions. She does need to be fed separately.
Tammy is currently working on all the things most puppies learn much earlier in life. She's making progress with potty training and is gradually being desensitized to wearing a collar and leash. Because she isn't ready for leash walks yet, she will need a securely fenced yard where she can safely continue building confidence.
Her ideal adopter will understand that confidence can't be rushed. Tammy doesn't need someone to feel sorry for her, she needs someone who will be patient, encouraging, and celebrate every small victory as she learns that people, homes, and everyday life are safe.
Watching Tammy blossom has been incredibly rewarding, and there's no doubt that with time, patience, and love, she's going to become an amazing companion. The adoption fee for puppies under 6 months of age is $215. If the puppy is too young or small to be fixed there will be a $75 spay/neuter rebate form provided. They currently have at least 1 puppy shot,, flea preventative, heartworm preventative and are microchipped with lifetime registration ($13).
