Story
|Santiago is a striking dog with a mostly white coat and a unique mix of white, tan, and grey on his face. He looks like a blend of Shepherd, Anatolian or Pyrenees, and Great Pyrenees, and carries himself with a gentle, thoughtful presence. At around 50 pounds, he’s a medium-large dog with a calm energy that makes him a steady companion. In the care of a foster home, Santiago has shown that he can settle when given space, patience, and quiet encouragement. He is comfortable in a household with other dogs and doesn’t react to normal activity or people moving around, showing that he can learn to feel safe in a calm, structured environment. Car rides are still a bit overwhelming, and new experiences can be intimidating for him, but with a gentle guide, Santiago is beginning to show curiosity and trust. He is not destructive and adjusts well when left alone in a secure, quiet space. Santiago is looking for a patient home that can continue to help him gain confidence, offering calm reassurance and gentle guidance. With the right family, he has the potential to blossom into a loving, loyal companion.

Story
Top Hat has a heart as big as his paws and a spirit that refuses to quit. After a rough start, he’s shown just how resilient, sweet, and eager for connection he truly is. He’s bright, alert, and genuinely excited about life (especially when it involves people!) In the home, Top Hat is affectionate, playful, and loves being close to his humans. He greets new people with enthusiasm and thrives on companionship. He is crate trained, and does well when left alone (even free-roaming for a few hours). Top Hat enjoys walks and is working on his leash skills, but his love for being out and about already shines through. He’s playful without being destructive and enjoys a wide variety of toys. He’s recently learned how to play fetch with a rope and is just starting to enjoy tug-of-war. This sweet, resilient boy would do best in an adoptive home that can offer a little extra patience and structure as he continues building confidence. In return, you’ll be rewarded with a loyal, affectionate companion who’s ready to leave his rough start behind and begin his next chapter surrounded by love.

KJ is well socialized, gentle and a joy to be with. He is housebroken and will sit on request. This includes waiting for his supper. His favorite toy is a large knotted rope. He loves to play fetch. He will also be happy to sit in a corner and chew on his toy until he falls asleep. He often takes naps with his paw on his toy; it’s adorable! On walks, he is very polite and has good leash-manners. But he also still has a lot of puppy playfulness in him. He will do that puppy bow and invite you to chase him or play with him. He will be a great companion for a person or family looking for a playful dog wanting to go on adventures or keep up with an active household. Meet this perfect boy while you still have the chance before he gets adopted!

Story
Hit the trail with Oatmeal a sweet 4-year-old wheelie dog shepherd, Anatolian mix currently at Austin Pets Alive! She is a calm and gentle creature with a weakness for pets and treats. Her love for cuddles is bound to warm your heart. She is also a social bug who loves a crowd. She is an exceptional pup and a staff favorite at Austin Pets Alive!. Not a lot is known about Oatmeal's past life, but we know she arrived at APA! with a chronic spinal injury that led to paralysis in her hind legs. However, she is resilient and doesn't let her paralysis stop her from living her best life. Oatmeal is a very chill dog who enjoys toys, walks, and cuddles. She also loves meeting people of all ages and has the potential to live with another dog. Taking care of Oatmeal does not cause much trouble; she just needs some help going potty. This is a straightforward technique that can be taught quickly. She also uses a wheelchair to go on walks, but using a sling to pick up her hind legs and place them in the chair makes this process smooth and easy. An ideal home for her would be one where she can easily enter and exit with her wheels and navigate by scooting around without risking getting injured or falling. Having designated areas for her would be preferred while she becomes accustomed to the new environment. Oatmeal is a member of the exclusive Ruff Tail Runners, a group of dogs trained to walk or run on Lady Bird Lake. This little off-campus activity allows these dogs to get a nice break from their kennels and showcase them in front of many trailgoers to help them get adopted. During her trail walks, Oatmeal loves to sniff around and engage in her favorite sport, squirrel-watching, which she's quite proficient at. She is an excellent reminder of resilience and willpower. Nothing can stop this sweet pup from sharing her love with everyone, no matter how tough things might get, motivating everyone around her to keep pushing in whatever challenge they may face Oatmeal is ready to "roll out" of the shelter in her pink wheelchair and into a loving home. If you'd like to foster or adopt Oatmeal or any of our adorable adoptable pets, visit our website, austinpetsalive.org, or come in person at 1156 W Cesar Chavez near downtown Austin. Oatmeal was also recently featured in Austin Fit Magazine! https://www.austinfitmagazine.com/October-2024/pet-of-the-month-oatmeal/

Story
Meet Odie, an 8-month-old male Anatolian Shepherd puppy with a giant heart and an even bigger road to recovery ahead. Odie recently underwent orthopedic fracture repair surgery on 1/9/26 and is now in need of a medical foster who can give him a calm, safe place to heal. Odie’s surgery was successful, but the next several weeks are critical to ensure proper healing. He needs a foster who can follow a structured recovery plan and provide lots of patience, supervision, and love. Despite the restrictions, Odie is still a puppy—sweet, resilient, and deserving of comfort while he heals. Having a foster home instead of prolonged kennel rest will make a huge difference in his recovery and emotional well-being. All medical care is covered—we just need someone to provide the space, structure, and compassion Odie needs to heal safely.

Story
Introducing Yogurt (Yogi)! This beautiful girl was living on the streets of South Texas, trying desperately to protect her 10 young puppies. We rescued this family just in time as Yogi and her babies came down with parvovirus. They all received the best treatment but tragically only half of the puppies survived. Now that she is finished raising her family, Yogurt is now getting to experience the life she deserves in her foster home filled with comfort, safety, and love. She does wonderful with dogs of all sizes, especially her foster brother Rottweiler named Gus. They are the best of friends and he is helping to show Yogurt all about life as family pet in a real home. Yogi loves to be around people, especially her foster dad. She follows him all around the house and is just content with being close by. She looooves pets and belly rubs. She recently discovered toys and it’s amazing to see her so happy! Although we don’t know for sure what breeds Yogi is mixed with, we are guessing possibly Shepherd/ Belgian Malinois. She is very athletic and enjoys walks and time outside. We believe she would do amazing with a family who is active (hiking, walking, running) and can give her daily exercise. Yogurt is incredibly smart and is doing great with training, including potty-training and leash-training. Yogurt is currently undergoing heartworm treatment. Because of this, she is available for adoption to families within the Austin area. Our rescue covers the full cost of her heartworm treatment. If you are interested in adding Yogi to your family, please fill out the adoption application found on our website: www.savingsouthtexas.com/adoptables
