Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Meet Laikia! Laikia (who answers best to Laika) is an energetic and affectionate Aussie/Collie mix with a soft, medium coat and the brightest blue eyes! This playful pup is a bundle of joy wrapped in a cuddly, goofy package. She fills every day with laughter, showcasing her smarts and boundless energy. Always curious, Laika loves to explore and learn new tricks—especially when treats are involved! When Laika first came into foster care, she was nervous and protective. With patience, gentle reassurance, and plenty of treats, she’s blossomed into a loyal companion who loves curling up at your feet for naps and always pops back for attention throughout the day. Her sweet and snuggly side shines once she feels comfortable. Laika thrives on activity and playtime- chewing and chasing squeaky toys, playing fetch, and romping around with our resident dog, Ellie. Laika's herding instincts mean she can play a little rough, so slow introductions to new dogs and people are important. She is still learning how to manage her big feelings when meeting new people and dogs, and can be reactive and vocal at first. Because of this, Laika needs a patient, experienced family committed to positive reinforcement training and helping her build confidence. With consistency and love, she will continue to grow into the amazing companion she’s meant to be. Laika knows basic commands, responds to her name, and is very food-motivated- making her eager to learn more. She is fully potty trained, and with continued guidance, Laika will excel in any home that offers structure and care. If you’re looking for a smart, loyal, and affectionate dog who will bring endless fun and love to your life—and you’re ready to help her feel safe and thrive—adopt Laika and discover the joy of having this bright-eyed beauty by your side! Laikia is from an Owner Surrender. If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract. To learn more about Ruff Start’s adoption process and the care our foster animals receive, please visit our How to Adopt page. *Rescue puppies are notorious for losing their birth certificates before entering our rescue. We cannot guarantee the breed or size they will be full grown.* If you are unable to adopt but want to help this animal and others in our care, you can donate to support the medical and veterinary needs of all Ruff Start Rescue animals.   Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.December 22, 2025, 8:56 pm

Story
10 month old male, needs a job and has limited training; in a foster homeWe do our very best in providing truthful information about our adoptable dogs. If you do not see information about one of our dogs’ personalities, it is because we do not know much about them yet. We do appreciate a dog meet and greet to see if the dogs are compatible, an appointment is helpful but not required. We can complete a cat introduction at the shelter in a safe manner to get a sense of the dog’s behavior towards cats. With that knowledge, we will provide a blanket statement that you are ultimately responsible for keeping your cat safe. We recommend crate training for all our dogs while they adjust to a new home environment. Please bring along your family to meet the dog you’re looking at to see that it is a good fit. Also bring landlord permission for adopting a dog which includes any breed or weight restrictions.

Story
Navy Bean is a 5-month-old Australian Shepherd mix. She was abandoned in her dog crate in an alley way. Thankfully, a good Samaritan found her and brought her to us. And luckily, Navy was healthy and unharmed. We immediately sent her to foster.Navy was not potty trained when she first arrived, but after just 3 days, she was! She is very smart, a fast learner, and sweet as can be! She is being fostered with another puppy named Harlowe, and those 2 have quickly become best buds! Navy is still in her puppy phase, and she is right in the middle of her "biting everything and everyone" phase! By that, we mean the puppy nibbles phase. But we are working on that as we speak. She is being crate trained and learning how to walk politely on a leash - and doing great at both!Navy's favorite thing in the world is playtime with her bff, Harlowe. They love to run around and chase each other in their foster mom's fenced in backyard! Navy has been spayed, is up to date on all age appropriate vaccines and is microchipped. She is available for adoption now! Please fill out an adoption application, and a meet and greet can be set up!Apply here: www.aohrescue.org/forms ##2601212##
