Story
From Hamlet's foster mom: Hamlet is an affectionate, loving dog. He takes instruction very easily and is food/treat-motivated. He loves sleeping in a crate overnight, and whenever we leave the house for an extended time, is happy enough to be in there during the day even though his older foster brother is not crated. Hamlet has gotten along with anyone who visits, contractors at our house, other dogs at the dog park, loves to be outside (and goes out often daily), and does a great job leash walking the neighborhood with a Gentle Leader. He is an energetic but not excitable two-year-old who loves to run and play, is working on "fetch" and "bring", enjoys chew toys, snuggles on the couch and recliner, and has learned to sit and wait for his dinner. Hamlet would thrive with an active family with an outside fenced yard (although he could learn an electric fence probably as he is very smart) and while he has a gruff bark, does not use it frequently, only in play with his dog mates. He is short-haired and has taken well to being groomed as he enjoys touch. We think he is a wonderful mix of Labrador with Dutch shepherd, boxer, or American bulldog, or any of the above. Hamlet is, however, working on loving a car ride, and we believe with our frequent trips to the dog park he will soon love it. He is super friendly; we can't say enough about this foster, as he will make a loving family member. Story
In December, we took in 14 dogs from a property of 100 dogs of all ages. We still have 5 that are looking for their fur-ever homes. They had little to no exposure to humans before coming to NLOL. They have been used to only being with other dogs, not interacting in a loving way with people. When they came to our shelter, they did not understand play or toys, and had a flight response to human interaction. This behavior makes us feel that a home without small children is best for them. After months of the staff working with them and with our trainers, @Wolf Hill Kennels, it has been decided that socializing is the priority for their adjustment into companions. They will need to each be in a home with time to dedicate to their needs, growth and care. A home for these dogs will require a lot of one-on-one time to build a relationship. Some will very likely need hand feeding to gain trust along with continued efforts towards leash training, potty training, and helping them gain confidence in themselves. We know they are used to their pack; however we are not sure of how they will be with other dogs (Slow introductions and awareness of body language between them and personal pets will be imperative). We anticipate they will look to another dog for direction but don't know this for sure. Having structure and building a relationship with humans is important in their growth. Being in a home to learn how to be loved and enjoy being a dog is something they each deserve. They are spayed/neutered, microchipped, have age-appropriate vaccines, are heartworm negative, and on flea/tick & heartworm prevention. If you are willing to open your home and your heart, you can adopt one of these special pups for $150. **All New Leash on Life dogs must be adopted to families willing to have their pets be allowed inside-especially at night. No dog is allowed to be put on a "tie out" or chain outside and should be walked on a leash when not in a fenced in yard.**
