Story
Damara (aka Lucy) is a beautiful 2-year old female Australian Shepherd/Pointer mix who was brought to the HSOV on February 1, 2025 by a Washington County Ohio Deputy Sheriff who picked her up on Albright Road in the Beverly Ohio. Damara was not wearing a collar, and she was not microchipped. This young lady has a black-and-white short smooth coat, rather long legs with brindle shading on her hind legs, a tiny stubby/docked tail, and an adorable face with black/white freckles on her slender muzzle, a black/pink nose, and large floppy ears. Thanks to HSOV Kennel Tech Hannah Mcclain for spending time with Damara four outdoor photos on February 1st. Hannah and her colleague Madison Lee teamed up to help Damara with her best poses, and they learned that she would 'sit pretty' for good girl treats. Damara loved the attention/petting which Hannah and Madison gave her. Damara weighs 52 lbs and walked fairly well on a leash for Hannah. There is a (yet unconfirmed) report that Damara is not good with farm animals such as sheep/lambs. She is reported to be good with other dogs and is ok with children but will chase cats. Damara has already been spayed. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Damara will be held for the mandatory three-day stray hold so that her family will have an opportunity to reclaim her with proof of ownership. Since she was not reclaimed, Damara/Lucy was adopted by a new family on February 24, 2025. Unfortunately Lucy was returned to HSOV on March 11, 2025 because she was chasing deer and stray cats. Her new family loved her very much and felt she was the perfect pup but couldn't keep her away from the distractions of deer and cats. So Lucy is once again searching for the perfect home. Update: Lucy went home with a foster family on June 7, 2025.

Story
Simone is a beautiful 3-year old female (possible) Australian Shepherd mix who was brought to the HSOV on August 26, 2024 by a compassionate individual who found her on State Route 676 in the Churchtown area near Marietta Ohio. Simone was dragging an attached leash and, though she was obviously a very scared/frightened girl, she seemed to sense that this Good Samaritan was her guardian angel/savior .. And Simone jumped into her car and was driven to the safety of our shelter. Thanks also to the Washington County Ohio Deputy Sheriff who met them at HSOV and took Simone into the Receiving area of our shelter and made sure she was safe for the night. Simone has a lovely chocolate brown coat with blonde shading, a long tail, and an adorable face with expressive brown eyes, blonde eyebrows, a liver-colored nose, and a long chubby muzzle. Simone has teeny tiny 'folded over' ears which suggest that she might have some Shar-Pei ancestors in her family background. Simone was examined by one of our wonderful local veterinarians on August 28th because she had painful burns/peeling on the pads of her paws when she entered our shelter. Simone is temporary listed as a "Special Needs Dogs" since she is currently on antibiotics and anti-inflammatory/nerve pain medications. Our HSOV staff/kennel techs are soaking her sore feet in an Epsom salts solution each day, and Simone will return to the veterinarian's clinic for a follow-up appointment in a week or so. These photos of Simone were taken on August 30th in the shelter bathroom where she is currently being housed. Simone has a rather demure disposition but loves soft/soothing conversations, gentle petting, and attention. She is enjoying a quiet blanket-filled room of her own while she recuperates from her paw injuries. Simone weighs 40.2 lbs and isn't a very large girl when you see her in person. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Simone was held for three days so that her family would have an opportunity to reclaim her with proof of ownership .. But nobody called or came looking for this beautiful girl. Update: Simone's paws have healed up nicely, and she is no longer listed as being 'Temporarily Special Needs'. She loves taking walks these days and looks forward to being walked by our staff and volunteers. We've learned that Simone is not good with cats. Simone was spayed on October 1, 2024 and was also given rabies vaccine.

Story
Olive is a beautiful 4-year old female Australian Shepherd/Collie mix who was brought to the HSOV on March 19, 2025 after she was picked up in the vicinity of Turkeyhen Road/Warren Chapel Road in the Fleming Ohio area. Olive was accompanied by a handsome male Australian Shepherd Collie mix (Ozzie) who is most likely a relative. Olive and Ozzie were escorted to our shelter by the Washington County Ohio Dog Warden early that afternoon. Neither of the dogs were wearing a collar, and they were not microchipped. They were given the names Olive and Ozzie by our shelter staff/kennel techs. Olive has a tan-and-white medium-haired coat, a long tail, and an adorable face with dark brown eyes, a dusting of white on her long slender muzzle, and short floppy ears. Both Olive and Ozzie appear to have friendly outgoing personalities (and 'smiled' in many of their preliminary photos on March 19th in spite of being confined in floor crates). These updated photos of Olive were taken on March 21st when HSOV Kennel Tech Emily Beaver accompanied Olive outdoors for more flattering pictures. Olive was a happy girl who made the most of her 15-minutes of fame and took advantage of the opportunity for some playful antics with Emily. Olive "sat pretty" in several of her pictures and enjoyed some 'girl talk' with Emily (smile). Olive weighs 77 lbs. She walked fairly well on a leash and looked to Emily for guidance. In compliance with the Ohio Revised Code, Olive and Ozzie were held for the mandatory three-day stray holds so that their family would have an opportunity to reclaim them with proof of ownership. We were hopeful that someone would recognize them and help us reunite them with their family, but as of March 22nd nobody has called or came looking for this beautiful couple. Please call HSOV @ (740) 373-5959 if these are your dogs or if you have any information about them.

These photos of Simone were taken on August 30th thanks to HSOV Volunteer Emma Dahlgren who carried Simone outdoors and back to her safe haven so that her sore paws would not touch the hot concrete/gravel. Simone appeared to be housebroken when she was outdoors and quickly 'took care of business' the moment her paws were in the grass. Simone has a rather demure disposition but loves gentle petting and attention. She is enjoying a quiet blanket-filled room of her own (actually the shelter bathroom) while she recuperates from her paw injuries. Story
Oreo was adopted from us a few years ago but was sadly returned today 3/16/2024. She is a beautiful Pit/ Aussie mix that is now 3 years old. She is spayed, up to date and house trained. Oreo was returned because she started showing too much interest in the house cat and tried attacking it. She is also not good around small dogs. She lived with another bigger dog and did great. She is very sad and nervous being back in the shelter. We would love to find her a home with no little animals and possibly one other large doggy friend (meet and greet would be required). She absolutely adores her humans and younger children. She would follow them anywhere and listens very well. She loves to go play outdoors and go for walks. Would do best in an active home. Adoption fee is $100.00
