Story
Meet Tristan Tristan is a 1-year-old, approximately 66-pound mixed-breed boy with a soft personality, an expressive face and a surprisingly gentle way about him for such a big young dog. He likes to stay near his people, gives enthusiastic kisses when he is happy, and has an endearing habit of checking back to make sure his person is still with him. In his brief time in a home, he was quiet and well behaved indoors, did not jump on people, did not get into things, and happily divided his time between the beds and blanket nests he made for himself. He carried his stuffed animal from spot to spot and was perfectly content curling up nearby rather than demanding constant attention. Tristan can be timid when something is unfamiliar, but once he realizes he is safe, the affectionate young dog underneath comes out quickly. He has been described as a huge lovebug and gentle giant who warmed up to new adults and soon became eager to say hello. He enjoys affection, may offer a paw when you crouch down to greet him, and has shown none of the frantic jumping or bulldozing you might expect from a 66-pound one-year-old. He also walked nicely when comfortable, staying fairly close and occasionally looking back to check in with his handler. Tristan does become worried when his person disappears and may whine or paw at a door, so his next home should be willing to help him build confidence with being alone gradually rather than expecting immediate independence. His history around other animals is encouraging, although we still want introductions handled thoughtfully. The person who originally found Tristan reported that he had positive interactions with their small dog. At the shelter he ignored dogs in neighboring kennels and later stopped to calmly sniff another dog through a fence with a gentle tail wag. During his time in foster, he also showed remarkably little interest in the resident cats, even when they were considerably more concerned about his arrival than he was about theirs. He has not yet had a formal dog-to-dog assessment, so we are not calling him universally dog-friendly based on a handful of encounters, but nothing in his documented history before leaving the shelter suggested a dog looking for trouble. What Tristan needs most right now is the chance to keep learning what normal life feels like. He struggled badly with the stress and confinement of the shelter, improved quickly once he was in a home, and then lost that placement when his fosters family circumstances changednot because Tristan had done anything wrong. He is now back in boarding at Heidis Village, which puts a sensitive dog who already finds kennel life difficult right back into the environment he needed to escape. Tristan needs a foster or adopter who can give a young, affectionate, still-developing dog some stability, sensible guidance, and time to settle in.
