Supporters and Recurring Giving Donors will be put on our VIP Application List &#226&#128&#139 Adoption Costs and other important information. If you are interested in adopting from Sterling Animal Shelter, please submit an application through our "Pets for Adoption" page.  We are still closed to the public, and all adoptions will be scheduled by appointment only. Our appointments are scheduled by matching our applications to our available pets. If your application is chosen, our staff will contact you to set an appointment for a meet and greet to spend some time with the animal one-on-one. We do still have same day adoptions, and if your meet and is successful, you can take your pet home at the time of your appointment.  To find the best match for each pet, we prefer to have the entire family present when doing an adoption. If you have a dog at home already, please be prepared to bring your resident dog to meet a potential new dog, to ensure all parties get along. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable, so for most of the dogs we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each dog as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label. We expect that all adopted dogs will enroll in a formal dog training class with their new owners. Obedience and training classes are an excellent way to learn more about your newly adopted dog, gain handling and training experience, and improve your relationship with your pet. Story
Ziggy is a good dog for a single pet home. The bad: Ziggy has food aggression issues if food or treats are involved other animals can't be near by. He will NOT be given to a home with small children, he may attempt to take good from their hand. (Teens are fine. ) We worked with a behaviorist/ trainer and have determined that he NEEDS to be the only pet in the house. The good: Ziggy loves attention. He's playful and energetic. He's housebroken and will talk to you if he needs to go out. He is crate trained, will follow basic commands. He loves to play fetch and keep away. Walking, can be an issue on busy streets, but on quiet stretches he is fine. He will come when called, lay down, sit, stay and other basics. Ziggy was placed in our home by a Foster based rescue that didn't know of his issues with other dogs and food issues. If not for our other dog and small children he'd be here to stay. Unfortunately, he needs a new home.

Story
ATTENTION all "Swifties", Taylor Swift has entered the building! My foster family says I'm a fun loving girl. In spite of my humble beginnings, I have quickly learned the ropes to indoor living....and I'm all in. I love warm hugs, cuddles, belly rubs, soft beds, toys, treat-motivated, and having a backyard to run around in. I am still a maturing puppy. Life with my foster family has been much more glamorous than my past life. I live with two kids (as young as 6 years old) and two older dog-brothers. I love the activity of kids and animals; I also enjoy a cozy place next to you for naps. I play with my dog-brothers; we share toys, dog beds, and water bowl. My eldest dog-brother mostly ignores me, but I don't mind. When I arrived at my foster's house, there were a lot of rules I had to learn quickly. I am proud to say I am now house and potty trained! I respond to stay down, do your business, sit, shake, come, and working on get in your crate. I know my name and will come when called if I run out the back gate or through the front door. I sleep in a kennel/crate through the night and during the days when no one is home. I sit, walk on a leash, and take my treats gently. I am however, still refining my manners. My foster mom says I am a little bit jumpy and a lot licky. I am just so happy to have people who care for me that I am still learning the best way to show my appreciation. I have a BIG girl bark but I don't bark often. I like toys, balls, ropes, stuffies, and all kinds of chew toys. I've ridden in the car some and have done well. I am a smart girl, fast learner, and eager to please you. I have caught 1 rat, treed some squirrels and don't know what a cat is. I would do best in a home that likes to have a good time, that likes outdoor activities, with or without other animals. I just need attention and a secure fence with lots of toys. I can't wait to meet you and start living our best lives together. To see more pictures and videos of Taylor Swift copy and paste this link, you can apply directly for Taylor Swift by clicking the "Apply for Adoption button on the linked page. https://www.shelterluv.com/embed/animal/FODS-A-283 All our dogs come with 30 days of free post-adoption support through Petcademy.org. This benefit includes free access to Petcademy's team of trainers/behaviorists, as well as access to online materials that will help you settle your new family member into your home. You can text unlimited questions to Petcademy and they'll respond within 24 hours (Monday-Friday). We only adopt in the USA. We are open to adopting in other states, except in Massachusetts. There are quarantine laws for MA and until these laws change, we are not able to adopt into MA.

Story
Mr. Banks was found in an elementary school field being chased by kids - now don't feel bad for him, he LOVED it. He is a HUGE fan of kids and was so happy to be running around with them - a home with kids would be great for him. Mr. Banks is a 2 year old Shepherd/Black Mouth Cur mix, around 50lbs. He is a very sweet boy who is house trained and crate trained. He gets along great with other dogs and loves being active with his family. He does need a secure yard or watched outside as he loves to jump and play and if he has no one with him.... well he may try to find someone to play with. He is very smart and walks lovely on leash too. Don't let this one slip away! *All of The Right to Live dogs are fostered locally in San Antonio Texas and will be transported to other states to their new families upon adoption. We believe fostering dogs and not having them decompress in a kennelled environment is more beneficial for the dogs and builds their trust and companionship in a family situation. Adoption fee includes transportation costs, previous/current medical treatment (spay/neuter, etc.) and a health certificate for cross-state travel*

Story
Just look at those irresistible sweet puppy dog eyes! This lovely girl is Josie, a 10-month-old Black Mouth Cur mix with a beautiful brindle coat. She currently weighs 35 lbs. Josie might have a little more growing to do, but likely to remain a medium-sized pup (25 - 50 lbs.)Josie is a super sweet lady who just wants a forever home. She was saved from a high kill shelter by our partner rescue. Josie was then adopted out locally in Mississippi. Unfortunately, her adopter was no longer able to care for Josie and had to return her to our partner rescue at no fault of her own. Now Josie is ready for her fresh start!Josie is dog-friendly and kid-friendly! She is a little shy at first, but she warms up quickly and is so excited to find a forever family to love! She has not had an opportunity to be introduced to a cat. Josie has medium energy, so she would love to spend time playing with you or a pup friend, and would equally love to snuggle up on the couch.Josie is working hard on her leash, crate, and house training, which are all in progress. Patience and consistency are the keys to success. Josie will appreciate your care, patience, and love as she adjusts to her new home and finds her place in your family!Have the sweetest, saddest puppy eyes convinced you to open your home to Josie? If so, she cannot wait to meet you!The adoption fee for Josie is $500. That includes the cost of spaying/neutering, up to date vaccinations, foster care, rescue and transportation fees. To get the ball rolling, head over to our Adoption Application and submit your application today. A Dog Star representative will contact you within 24 hours. To speed up the process, contact your vet and give them permission to speak with us.If you do not get a response within 24 hours, check your spam folder.November 30, 2023, 6:13 am

Story
Meet Amata!! This adorable girl was found living under a truck in a rural area of Mississippi with her sister. We were able to save these two girls and get them to safety, as they would have never made it in the winter without shelter, food or water. Amata, you might ask what that stands for? It means lover or beloved love. She has a heart of gold with lots of love to give. Amata is a typical puppy, but also can be on the chill side every so often. She would love to have a friend in her new forever home, as she has always had her sister. As you can see, she loves her tons. They will pounce around and play with their toys. They definitely cannot wait to have a forever family, where they can have a comfortable bed to rest their head on day and night. Currently, they both sleep outside at night. This is not what we envision for our pups, but they are inside during the day at their fosters in Mississippi. They will need obedience training, someone who will be home with them and not leave them more than 3 hrs a day. We take puppies very seriously and will not adopt to anyone who is not willing to go to training and socialize them properly. Also, we know the holidays are right around the corner, and people will be looking for presents. Our dogs and puppies will not be presents of any kind. Please know we have strict guidelines that we will follow during our interviewing process regarding this matter. Amata cannot wait to meet her forever family. She deserves such a loving forever family who will treat her amazing!!! Apply now for this sweet girl!!!
