Niihau is not the type to rush up for attention, but once she feels safe, she becomes deeply loyal and devoted to her people. She does wonderfully with other dogs, cats, and livestock, but is not safe with chickens or small critters. She’s respectful with children who understand boundaries and patience. Niihau is crate trained, still working on potty training and leash skills, and does best in a secure home since she may try to flee if frightened. Car rides aren’t her favorite, and she has some separation anxiety she’s actively working through. Niihau would thrive in a calm home, apartment, or ranch with someone looking for a project dog… one who needs time, structure, and reassurance. Meet Summer 🌞🐾 Summer is a sweet young adult Pitbull mix with a mostly white coat and a few special markings — including one adorable brown ear. When she first arrived at the shelter, she was extremely shy and shut down. Thanks to the patience, love, and care of staff and volunteers, she has blossomed into an affectionate dog who loves nothing more than cuddles and treats. With strangers, Summer can still be a bit reserved at first, but a handful of treats is usually all it takes to win her over. She walks nicely on leash, has shown no signs of leash reactivity during her time with us, and enjoys calm strolls by your side. During her dog-to-dog evaluation, Summer was neutral and seemed new to being around other dogs. By the end of her session, she began showing more interest and curiosity. If you have another dog at home, we strongly recommend bringing them in for a meet-and-greet to ensure it’s a good fit.
