This dog is on our call to action list based on resource guarding that was reported from two homes. In the first home, Casper Bailey would guard his food, and he did bite his owner when they tried to pick up food he had spilled and put it back in his bowl. In the next home, Casper Bailey started to guard the kitchen, and bit the adopter`s shoe when they were trying to get something out of the cabinet. While the two injuries have been minor, the behavior is concerning. This dog is going to need an adult only home with significant management around food. Lola is the sweetest 2-year-old Bull Terrier mix who weighs 32 lbs. She was found wandering the streets of Bakersfield and likely had a litter of puppies prior to being rescued. Her foster Dad was sent a Facebook post from the shelter, which announced her impending euthanization due to lack of public interest (likely due to her breed being hastily labeled as “Pit Bull” at the time). Luckily, Lola was taken in by her foster Dad six hours before her scheduled euthanization. Despite her past, Lola has the most loving and calm temperament, and is the absolute definition of a “Velcro dog”. She quietly shadows her foster Dad wherever he goes, then crawls into his lap when he sits down. Her favorite activities include snuggling, cuddling, and receiving belly rubs! She recently discovered the joy of chasing a ball and will always try to get her foster brothers to join her. Lola bonds to humans and other dogs very quickly, no matter their age, gender, or size, becoming a member of the family within hours! As for obedience, Lola is currently working on minimizing licking, which she often does when excited. However, with some gentle warnings and treats, Lola responds well to training and is a fast learner. She is already fully crate-trained and potty-trained; every foster’s dream! While she does get along with other dogs of all sizes and ages, Lola is not strongly dependent on canine companionship; she would be happy regardless of another dog in the home. She prioritizes snuggling with her family, receiving lots of pets, and eating yummy snacks! MEDICAL HISTORY: Lola does not have a history of medical issues, underlying health problems, or is in need of veterinary care. She is spayed, up-to-date on vaccines, and microchipped. IDEAL HOME: Lola would do best with an individual or family who is moderately active and ready to give her all the snuggles! She gets along with dogs of all sizes and ages (including puppies), as well as humans and young children. We would be open to potential adopters living in an apartment or condo, as long as daily walks are routine. FUN FACTS: - Lola is a relatively calm pup, and would rather cuddle on the couch than roughhouse. - She is usually quite indifferent to other dogs, but will play if initiated! - She has an adorable smiling expression when she is happy or content. - Lola sleeps beside her foster Dad every night. - She always waits for “permission” before jumping on her foster Dad’s lap!

Yeti is on our `Call to Action` list due to some challenging behaviors we`ve noticed here at the shelter--especially around other dogs. Yeti has a team of staff and volunteers who are working with him and he`s making amazing progress, but he is still a high energy dog who needs consistent exercise and enrichment. The shelter environment is difficult for him, and we think he needs out ASAP. Yeti would be best in a home with no other animals as he`s working on his skills, and likely adults or older children. He loves to play with his ball and he will gladly chase them for as long as you`ll throw them, and return them to your feet. This dog is on our `Call to Action` list because his handlers are limited to our more skilled staff and volunteers. This limitation is necessary for the safety of the dog, volunteers, and staff - but it also means his opportunities for enrichment and social interaction can be limited as well. The need for careful handling is because Cassadano has a low tolerance for body handling - sometimes when petting or touching him, he turns and snaps. Usually, it doesn’t seem like he is committed to a hard bite, more like a warning to get you to stop, but it is a bite nonetheless. He has been in our care going on 2 years in March 2026. No one has been able to take on a dog like him. He’s won over many staff and volunteers with his fun-loving, goofy personality and his exceptional playfulness with other large dogs. He has probably helped our playgroup team evaluate hundreds of dogs, if not more! It’s heartbreaking to see him grow up in a shelter, it’s no place for a dog to live long term. We hope there is someone who is willing to see past his initial unwillingness to be pet, take it slow like we have over the last year or so, and let Cassadano come around in his own time. @vcanimalservices Cassadano, the boxer mix who LOVES other dogs ?? If you’ve got a rowdy dog at home who wants a playmate, Casso is a perfect candidate. If you are looking for a goober of a dog who will put a smile on your face every single day, Cassa D is the MAN. Cassadano has spent nearly a year in shelter. He can be wary of strangers, and is not the most cuddly dog out there, so is unfortunately passed over. ?? He appreciates meeting new humans slowly, but is well worth the time spent to become his friend. And if you’ve got treats… it may not take that much time at all!
