Story
Meet Boomer, a sweet 1-year-old Carolina Dog mix who’s on an incredible journey of growth and discovery! This handsome guy came to us when his previous owner became overwhelmed with too many dogs, and he arrived pretty nervous and under-socialized. But here’s the beautiful part—with lots of tasty treats, gentle encouragement, and plenty of baby talk, Boomer has really started to blossom! He’s still a work in progress, learning important skills like walking on a leash, but he’s making progress every single day. When Boomer met another dog, he was a bit timid and defensive, but not in an “I’m going to hurt you” way—more of an “are you going to hurt me?” way. Because of this, we definitely recommend meet-and-greets with any dogs in your home, and we think a calm, respectful canine companion would be a better fit for him. If you have patience, love, and the desire to watch a wonderful dog truly flourish, Boomer might just be your guy. Come meet him at the shelter (430 Bristol Dr., Statesville, NC) and experience his sweet personality for yourself!

Good with dogs,
Story
Bandit is a sweet, energetic puppy who is looking for his fur-ever home! He was part of an unexpected litter of 6 puppies, born 9/11/25. He's primarily been kept indoors but enjoys running and playing outside. He is very shy & timid at first, takes time to warm up to new people, but does NOT show any aggression. He loves squeaky chew toys and trying new foods--so far, he's a fan of carrots, apples, sweet potatoes, & blueberries. Bandit is a quick learner & loves to earn treats! Food-motivated but not food aggressive. He has not been around cats or children, but a couple of his siblings were adopted into homes with children and have done well.

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. Monty requires an approved Best Friend Pet Adoption application before you can meet him. If you are interested in Monty, please submit an application now!  Here is the  link:   https://toolkit.rescuegroups.org/of/f?c=WHMSYCNC .      Monty is a 3-year-old, 40-pound mixed breed boy. He is a nervous Nelly with strangers and does not believe in instant friendships. He wants to be a protector, but his courage is mostly theoretical and often accompanied by full-body trembling and at least 6 feet of distance from the perceived “threat.” Think “security system with anxiety.” Monty loves other dogs and truly needs a confident dog friend in his future home. Another dog helps him feel safe and grounded. He is also cat-friendly and horse friendly.  Walks and car rides? Hard no. Monty is a proud homebody who believes the backyard is the pinnacle of outdoor living. He is not your hiking buddy. He is your “let’s stay home and watch TV” buddy. Once Monty decides you are safe (this takes time, patience, and respect), he turns into an absolute sweetheart who craves affection and attention. He bonds deeply, loves hard, and will stick close to his person like a tiny, emotionally dependent shadow. Sometimes Monty is scared of things that aren’t obvious to the humans in the house. Maybe the wind? Maybe the weather? Maybe a discrete noise? Maybe a ghost?  Monty would thrive in a calm, understanding home with another friendly dog, a sense of humor, and people who don’t take his quirks personally. If you’re willing to meet him where he is, Monty will reward you with loyalty, love, and a lifetime of watching you very closely to make sure you’re okay. Some of the information contained in this biography includes approximations based on our expertise and is not guaranteed.    We prefer that applicants live no further than one hour from Cary NC as our dogs must be seen by a BFPA veterinarian for all medical care that might be needed during the two week trial period prior to adoptions being finalized.  For the right home for Monty, we may consider applicants who live further away.     INTERESTED IN ADOPTING MONTY? ******Please note, once completing the initial screen you will be connected with the placement for a video chat. Transports run every few weeks and we will have the dog on the next available transport once approved. If you are not able to accept a dog until a specific time period, please apply at that time************ We are a volunteer run rescue and donate our time to these dogs. IF you are not serious about moving forward in our adoption process, please do not apply. If someone other than yourself is part of the decision making process, please make sure you have spoken with them and they are on board. We really do not want to waste anyone's time if you are not serious about adopting this dog. Florence (Flora), 3 years old, spayed female, Carolina Dog mix, 46 pounds. She is in a foster home in HOUSTON, TEXAS and can transport out of State once an adopter is approved. Florence, affectionately nicknamed, Flora, Flory, Lory, or Sweetpea, is a playful and energetic dog who loves to wrestle and be chased. She would do best in a home with dogs of similar size and energy level. When playing, Flora could play for hours. She loves to interact with another dog in the home, Furman by licking his face. Flora has experience playing with dogs ranging from a 35-pound Cocker Spaniel to a 60-pound Pyrenees mix. Flora requires slow and guided introductions to other dogs. She has shown some leash reactivity, exhibiting behaviors like raised hair, whimpering and barking. Her foster parents have worked with her on this behavior. It did take her some time to befriend the resident pup, and Flora may do best as the one and only in the home. Flora’s compatibility with cats is unknown. She adores the 8-year-old child in the home, but is nervous of new children. Flora does have stranger danger when new people come into the home, and tends to bark at them, especially when they move around quickly. Because of her fear, she may prefer an adult household at this time. As mentioned, Flora has some leash reactivity and gets easily spooked, often pulling a lot. However, she has made progress with positive reinforcement and minimal stimuli. She walks much better in calm environments with less activity. She will need consistent training to help her with her leash skills and feeling safe around new dogs and stimuli. Flora is fully housebroken. She has demonstrated some anxiety in the crate at home. When her foster parents have gone out of town she has gone to boarding where she is crated with no issues. At home, she is able to be out of a crate and unsupervised with zero issues. She is fed separately from the other dogs in the home. Otherwise, she shares her toys well and has no issues with people and food, although she needs reminders to take treats gently. Flora has high energy needs and requires dedicated outdoor playtimes to do well inside the home. She thrives in a moderately active home with regular outdoor play sessions. She loves playing with the resident dog, bucking around the yard, eating, going for walks, sunbathing, and birdwatching. She is a total love bug and enjoys snuggling. She does well in the car but is terrified of storms, often seeking shelter in a closet or burying her head in a lap. Flora’s ideal home would be with someone who is often around, enjoys walks or jogs, and will play fetch with her. A home with no other pets or a well balanced dog of similar age, size, and energy level would be ideal. Flora needs an owner who will continue positive reinforcement to help with her anxiety. Flora is very smart, loves learning new tricks, and is very submissive and affectionate. She may be a work in progress, but will reward you with love and companionship for years to come! ***Listed BREED and AGE - We are taking our best guess & recommendations from our veterinarian on age, breed and size when fully grown. We rarely know a dog's exact age nor are we able to tell the true or full breed mix of dogs as our information is limited most of the time. *** Interested in applying to adopt her? Story
Sweet Sadie Mae came to us from a supporter who ran into a lady in a local town just wanting to give her away. Afraid she may get in wrong hands, the supporter grabbed her up and called us. Sadie Mae is still a baby and is such a love bug. She gets along with everyone! If you are looking for a puppy, she could be the girl for you. If you think she may be, please continue to read and fill out our on line application. RECOMMENDATIONS & PROCEDURES Please note, the following are recommendations for puppies and different breeds of dogs. We will evaluate each application on an individual basis to see what is best for the dog/puppy and the potential adopter. Puppies are very fragile and not toys. We recommend children be at least six years old to be considered to adopt a puppy. Small breed dogs ( such as chihuahuas, yorkies, shih tzus , etc) we recommend children be at least eight years old. Herding, working breeds we recommend children to be at least 12 years old. Again these are recommendations. Adoption Procedures: We will travel up to two hours ( one way) to do physical home visits and we do not do virtual home visits. ( we are in Cleveland County NC) Most of our dogs come from bad situations and we want to know where their forever home is going to be. While we do not require fencing on all dogs, certain dogs that need a fenced in yard, will not be adopted unless potential adopter has one. We also adopt some dogs to people who live in apartments ( as long as the landlord approves) but not all dogs. We do not adopt to anyone under 21 years of age. We also do not feel college students are the best fit for most of our dogs. Most of our dogs again, come from bad situations and need lots of attention. Most college students have financial responsibilities and we feel need to be focused on school. Our goal is to match the dog with a family that fits the dog’s needs. We are solely focused on what is best for each dog in our rescue. These dogs have had enough moving around, dumped out like trash, and we want to ensure they find their forever home. We do require you sign a contract and if at any time you cannot continue to provide for the dog, the dog comes back to the rescue. Your first step to adoption is filling our our on line application. You will then get an automated email stating we got your application Next our adoption coordinator will be in touch either by phone or email If your references check out, a home visit will be scheduled. After the home visit is done, a meet and greet with the dog you are interested in and/or any other available dogs we have will be scheduled If the dog and you are a match, contract will be signed and you may take your new family member home.
