Story
Old Yeller, is that a new trend? Old stuff made NEW?? Cause I am NOT old, although I am Yeller, a really pretty YELLER COLOR!!! :) I am a Yeller Chesapeake bay retriever/ YELLER lab mix, it is important for my new family to know about the Chesapeake bay breed. We can be very stubborn, smart and independent and I really like to be in charge, so my new family needs to be strong leaders too. I am a handsome bloke, with swirls of yellow and white all through my coat. I am very smart and very sweet. I can from a high kill shelter with no hope- Now I EXUDE hope!! And LOVE!!! I WAS heartworm positive but have already finished the treatment and am NEGATIVE and just stay on prevention for the rest of my life. I am good with other dogs, but really would be best in an only dog home, cause I want all the attention :) I LOVE MY people and I tend to take "control" of my home so have to have a couple of things... 1) STRONG leadership owner, 2) I have to have an owner who will be wiling to not let me meet everyone who visits.. I want to protect my home a little too much... and 3) I have to stay in the San Antonio/TX area so my rescue friends can keep close tabs on me and how i am doing :) I have been running and playing since I am safe, but really am a couch potato. I am a bigger boy and about 65-70#. Look me up, get my number, text or call me OR just APPLY to ADOPT ME!!! I will be waiting by the phone!!! Local adoption fee is $200 (in TX)

These pups are in Vienna, Virginia too!

Story
Meet Duke! A young couple who saw him running along I-85 saved this handsome Lab mix. It was a harrowing experience, and it took them 3 hours to get him to safety. After posting on lost and found and notifying the local shelters, no one came forward to claim him. They graciously took Duke in, and he lived with their Australian Shepherd and 5-month-old baby until a foster home could be found. Duke was in his SC foster for a month before coming to the DC metro area living with Lou, Scotty, and their two GSDs, Knox and Dozer. Duke did well as part of a pack and found a playmate in Knox who is close in age. He loved to play chase in the yard and shared toys well. Duke is an energetic but not a roughhouse player and was very respectful of their senior dog, Dozer.  We think Duke is about 1-1.5  years old and is a long, lanky 66 pounds. He has a medium-high energy level and has the classic, lovable Lab personality. He is both housetrained and crate-trained and is allowed free-roam privileges at night. He is a more submissive and compliant pup who is easy to bathe and has no issues with nail trims.   Duke, has been in his local foster home for almost a month now, living with foster parents, Jackyn and George, and their three-year-old daughter, his new bestie. This country boy is now living in the burbs of Alexandria and adjusting to a more active community with lots of sights and sounds to navigate.   FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 3/3/24 “Duke has entertained us and kept our daily steps well above 10K for just over one month. He is a goofy, fun, and lovable dog. We’ve fostered or temp fostered several dogs and Duke, by far, is the one that has made it the hardest not to be a foster fail. Duke is amazing with our daughter. I can't say enough about how gentle he is with her inside the house. The integration was effortless and pretty immediate. Outside in the yard, he is a little more energetic around her and wants to play so we have to be a little more careful to make sure he doesn't accidentally knock her down. His house manners are on point. He has not had any accidents, he stays off the furniture (except the one chair we allow him to sit on), he does not chew on any of our three-year-old’s toys (which are plenty and always on the floor), and he doesn’t take food off the counter or table or anywhere else our daughter leaves her snack bowls. Although we do keep a watchful eye on him. When we leave the house, we usually crate him. The crate is not his idea of a spa day, but he will go in on command if we have a treat. We’ve also left him out of his crate and he was non-destructive while we were gone – just slept on his chair. He has a big bark so nobody is coming inside uninvited, but he is a pseudo watchdog because he really is just a gentle (mid-size) giant who takes about a minute before he invites you into his circle (dogs are automatically in – no delay). We are working on his barking – he is still getting used to ‘city living.’ We redirect him when he barks. He is eager to please and responsive. Duke is an active young dog who loves to spend time in the yard. He likes to dig, lay in the sun, play fetch, and run around the yard chasing all wildlife. He can jump a 4ft fence so we keep an eye on him. He gets three long walks per day and he would gladly take more if offered. He is non-reactive to other dogs on leash but will want to say hi and play if you let him. He attends doggy-day care weekly, which he loves. He also loves going to Home Depot. Duke would do best with an active family with a decent-sized yard and a 5'+ fence. He would do fine as an only dog but really loves other dogs and would love to have a buddy. He’s a young pup who is still building his confidence, so it is important his forever family continue to expose him to a variety of settings, dogs, and people. Duke is such a special dog. And if the timing were different, we would 100% adopt him.” ******* Duke is such a sweetheart and will make an excellent family dog. We are looking for a fun, active family for him in the burbs. He would love a home with other dogs and kids in the mix.  NOTE: Preference will be given to active families with some large dog experience. Having a pup playmate in the home is a bonus!   Apply today! Story
Meet Mary! Mary has been in her local foster home for a few weeks now, and she's doing great! She has such a sweet, good nature and impeccable social skills with both humans and animals. Her foster parents have a dog walking/pet sitting business and need to foster very adaptable dogs. Mary integrated easily with her foster pack - both cats and dogs - and has done well meeting all the client dogs, seeing them as new playmates and snuggle buddies. Mary came to us pregnant, and we knew her as a proud mama for the first few months she was with us. She was surrendered to a local shelter just days before Christmas to a shelter that was already over capacity. They set up a temporary spot in their bathroom and put out a plea to the rescue community for help. Thankfully, Worthy Dog found a fabulous foster home for Mary to care for her pups, and she did an excellent job nursing her large brood and all of her puppies have been adopted. Once Mary finished her motherly duties, her new fun, playful personality emerged. She’s still a young pup around 1.5 to 2 years old. She loves to be around people and makes friends quickly. She greets new people with a wagging tail, loves to snuggle, and will lean into you for pets. She is very gentle and has been around kids ages 1 to 10 years and will make an excellent family dog. Her favorite things include romping around the yard, playing with a pup buddy, and snuggling with her humans. She's a big fan of treats too! Her foster mom, Lisa, checked in with an update: “Mary is doing great and is sweet as can be! She’s playful but respectful and sits patiently for food. She’s perfectly housetrained and will sleep in bed with us all night long with no disruptions. She loves other dogs and is great with our cats too. We have a cattle dog boarding right now who has been a fun playmate for her, and they are having a blast. She’s young, playful, and active, but not overly so. She needs a commitment to daily walks and playtime and would do best with a pup playmate in her home. She’s gentle and submissive with the other dogs and loves to cuddle with us and our dogs too. We have started crating her when we leave her home alone because she can be a little mischievous and get into things. We’ve been feeding her in the crate to reinforce that it is a safe, positive space, and we always leave her with a bone or high-value treat to entertain her. Mary is honestly perfect for a family that wants a young dog. She’s totally trainable and so, so sweet. Once someone meets her I know they’ll fall in love.” Apply today!  BREED ESTIMATE: Black Lab Mix GENDER: Female APPROXIMATE WEIGHT: 57-60 lbs (still has some baby weight to lose) APPROXIMATE AGE: ~ 1.5 years old COAT TYPE:  Medium flowy coat ADOPTION FEE: $425 OTHER INFO: utd on shots/spayed/microchipped LOCATION:  Washington, DC (NE)   FOR MORE INFO OR TO ADOPT: Please go to https://adopt.worthydog.org and complete the application.
