Story
Louie is a sweet boy that is full of life and love! He had owners until he was a year and a half old. Unfortunately when they moved they left him behind. So he spent the next year and 2 months as a street dog in Puerto Nuevo Mexico. The neighbors made sure he never went hungry but no one was able to give him a home. That's when we got to meet him! He has a personality 10 stories tall! He was more than happy to jump in the car and come back to the rescue with us. He has spent the last 2 months getting healthy, getting his current vaccines, and being sterilized. He is now ready for his forever family!

Story
This pup was unable to use his rear legs and walked only on his front legs. We were able to do surgery and he now has a good chance of being able to use the rear legs in the near future as he recovers. He is a very sweet dog for all he has been through. He is still walking mostly on his front legs, but that does not slow him down one bit. ##1606331##

Story
Hi I'm Chanty, yep like Chantily Lace. I started my journey hiding in a tote of household goods and a child's rainboots which we can only assume were discarded with me in that alley.  I was scared and wouldn't let people catch me.  There were coyotes so I was not taking chances.  I made the best of my situation and could be seen doing zoomies in the adjacent field and leaping after butterflies and shadows on the alley wall while my captures patiently waited for me to consider going in the trap to be caught.   My color is a creamy champagne with chocolate points. My coat is smooth and silky.  I am down for cuddles or play.  They say I'm a firecracker.  I love to be the center of attention and spend my time entertaining you with my playful antics.  As a youngster I play like a puppy and like to be on the go.  I can still be bashful with new people but warm up quickly.  Dogs are great and I haven't met cats yet.  I'd love to be woven into your heart just like my namesake. Because of my Flight Risk I cannot be left unattended in a yard, crated is a must when you are gone, tight grip on the leash for adventures and no off leash activites for life in unfenced areas.  My new family must be aware of open doors and windows at all times.  I need to stay safe. Story
Meet Minnie!  She was seen being tossed from a vehicle in a rural part of the county.  No one could find her and assumed her dead in an area thick with predators (owls, coyotes and cats of all sizes).  Days later she popped up, frightened and ran if anyone approached.  After reports of repeated sightings she was humanely trapped and her new life began.  No owner came claim to her so she went to foster where she decompressed and started to learn about love.  She was under a year old and clearly knew little of human touch or kindness.  After several months she learned to trust, walk on leash, bond and love.  Due to foster circumstances her time there had to terminate and she has continued her journey on site at the rescue facility.  After a year she tugs the heart strings of all volunteers with her sad dopey eyes, desperate need to love and be safe.  She loves. her "normal".  She is always eager to go on her walks and does great with those she can trust.  She struggles with new people but is eager to please, treat motivated and warms up quickly if you go slow and let her lead.  She wants to snuggle.  Pillows are her favorite spot in bed.  She wants to be your shadow.  Despite her fear of people she is happy to go on adventures and enjoys her time in the company of those that make her feel safe.  She can be around dogs but does not share so can't live with other pets because she guards her stuff and people with animals (NOT people).  She has the little dog complex and no fear when taking on an animal challenge, which for sure is how she survived her time amidst the wilderness.  She continues to work on her world bravery with pack walks and outings but has done her time and is due for her home.  She has recurring cherry eye on both sides.  One has already been addressed surgically but came back.  Vet recommendation is to leave it alone if surgery did not cure and it presents no discomfort or irritation.  It comes and goes and does not bother her.  Vet's words were it looks worse to us than it feels to her.  Can you be patient, love unconditionally, have no expectations other than a deep soul connection?  If so, this girl is for you. Flight Risk: do not leave unattended in a yard, crate training is a must when you are gone, tight grip on the leash is a must on adventures. Must be aware of open doors and windows.  Can NEVER be offleash in unfenced areas for life.To adopt: https://petstablished.com/adoption_form/37765/genericTo foster: https://petstablished.com/foster_form/37764/genericEmail: awayhomefordogs@gmail.com ##1318876##

Story
'Charlie' Chihuahua X- male- 3 yr oldCharlie found himself in a predicament that he could have never imagined, as he lay on the cold, hard shelter floor in terrible pain from being shot in the spine. Confused, in agony, and terrified of his future, this small baby was starting to give up all hope. The bullet was still lodged in this poor baby’s spine. We quickly took him to the vet, hoping to provide this innocent soul some comfort and have the bullet removed. But during the surgery it was discovered that If the bullet was to be removed Charlie this could cause him to become a paraplegic for the rest of his life. Therefore leaving the bullet in allowes him to run and play with a bit of wobbliness, but better than risking becoming a paraplegic. For now, Chalie is safe and sound at his foster home bouncing around and playing with his foster siblings. Charlie has special needs... he needs help having his bladder expressed. This is VERY EASY to do and we will happily teach you. He would LOVE to have a playmate in his new home. Story
'Lumi' Chihuahua, female-7 lbs, 1 1/2 yrs oldLumi the 1.5-Yr-Old Chihuahua was Intentionally given a Life-Threatening Dose Of Methamphetamine. Tiny Chihuahua Lumi was fighting for her life after being forcibly given methamphetamine by a teenager in her home, which was filmed and posted on social media, and then left for dead at a local shelter. This sick act left Lumi’s body overtaken with tremors, However she is strong and survived!!! She will likely suffer long-term neurological damage. (tremors) The torture and abuse that has been inflicted on 1.5-year-old Chihuahua Lumi is beyond anything we could have imagined even in our worst nightmares. Lumi was recently dropped off at the Long Beach, CA animal shelter after being intentionally given methamphetamine by her owners’ teenage son. The entire horrific incident was filmed and posted on social media. By the time Lumi arrived at the shelter, she was suffering severe tremors and barely clinging to life. As soon as Open Arms Rescue was made aware of Lumi’s situation, we wasted no time getting her directly to the vet and she was immediately admitted to the hospital for life-saving care. Lumi spent several days in the hospital receiving medication through an IV. As a result of this inexplicable act, Lumi will likely suffer long-term or possibly permanent neurological damage. (tremors) She will need to be on medication for the rest of her life. THE GOOD NEWS is that she has come a long long way in her recovery and her tremors have mellowed out substantially since the beginning when we first rescued her. She plays, runs, interacts w/other small dogs and loves to be cuddled and snuggled. She will require meds for life and this is a cost of aprox. $100 per month. We would like her to go to a home where someone is home all the time to give her the attention and love she deserves. Our adoption fee through our rescue covers the dog being fully vaccinated, micro-chipped and spayed/neutered, dewormed and flea treated. 'Leah' Chihuahua X- female- 9 yrs old-7 lbsLeah came in to the rescue as a paraplegic. We put her on a course of strict cage rest and she miraculously regained the use of her hind legs. Leah is so happy to be held by someone who loves her that she literally vibrates with joy. Everyone at the rescue loves Leah very much, she is definitely a fan favorite. The temporary paralysis left Leah with some incontinence, but nothing a cute little diaper won’t fix. Leah is a 9 year old 7 pound Chihuahua. Leah has been waiting a long time for her forever home, please don’t make her wait much longer. Leah would do best in an adult only home.9 yrs old -7 lbsOur adoption fee through our rescue covers the dog being fully vaccinated, micro-chipped and spayed/neutered, dewormed and flea treated. He is litter train but will use as last resort as prefers to go outside.
