You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. My name is Vin Diesel and I'm a senior, male chihuahua.  I just had a dental so my teeth are in pretty okay shape now.  I'm great with other dogs and cats and also respectful kids.  I'm of course hoping to enjoy my retirement ages in a calmer home though.  I walk very well on a leash and love going for car rides.  I'm also potty trained and know my basic commands.  I have great manners and would make an amazing addition to most households.  I'm fixed, up to date on vaccines, and microchipped. His adoption fee is $400 To adopt Vin Diesel, fill out an application at www.kakf.org/formsVisit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.October 13, 2025, 1:53 pm

Story
Meet Sparkler! Born April 14, 2025 Hey there, hooman! I’m Sparkler! What’s up! I’m Sparkler, your soon-to-be favorite little ball of fur, zoomies, and unconditional love. I was born on April 14, 2025, and I’ve already had quite the adventure. I came all the way from Texas, and now I’m a 7-month-old, 20-pound wiggle-butt bursting with energy and cuddles. I’m not going to get very big, so don’t worry — I’ll always fit perfectly in your lap (and probably your shoulder, too… sorry, not sorry). I’m about 98% potty trained, and I already know how to sit. …We’re working on “lay down,” but honestly, “wiggle, bounce, and do my happy hops” is way more fun. I’m a total foodie, so if you’ve got snacks, I’ve got tricks. I adore humans of all ages — kids especially — and I get along great with other dogs. I haven’t met many cats yet, but I’m keeping an open mind. I’m healthy, up to date on everything I need, and so ready to find my forever family. My favorite things include enrichment pads, stuffed toys, fetch, cuddles, walks, and food. Lots of food. If you’re looking for a loyal, loving, slightly chaotic little sidekick who will make you laugh every single day — I’m your girl. Love and slobbery kisses, Sparkler Our standard adoption fee is $375 if paid by cash or check, or $385 if paid by credit card (which includes a $10 processing fee). This fee covers spay/neuter surgery when age appropriate at one of our participating veterinarians, age-appropriate core vaccinations, fecal testing, deworming, flea and tick preventative, and microchipping. In order to be considered for adoption, we require a fully completed application, a phone interview, and a meet-and-greet with your entire family. Please note that submitting an application does not commit you to adopting and does not guarantee approval—it simply allows us to begin the review process. If you are interested in adopting or would like additional information, please email us at adopt@safehavendogsIL.org to request an application. Keep in mind that the breed and size listed in each dog's biography are our best educated guesses and are not guaranteed. Safe Haven Dog Rescue reserves the right to refuse the adoption of any dog or puppy to any applicant for any reason.

Story
Meet Scout, an adorable 20lb Terrier/Chi/Cattle Dog type mix who came from local animal control as an unclaimed stray. He is a very sweet boy who loves to be with people and receive attention. He knows sit and paw and will happily offer those commands whenever you would like, sometimes even when you are not asking for them. He has not been a fan of other dogs since arriving at the shelter. Scout has lots of energy and is working on leash manners. Because of his dog reactivity, he will need some work on walks. A fenced yard would be great for him. He does love to run around, chase toys, and sniff in the grass. He can tend to grab the leash to try to tug or be a little mouthy when he gets excited. He is looking for a home with no children or other dogs.

Story
Meet Chewy, a 2-year-old Chihuahua mix, weighing about 16 pounds. He was found as a stray and never reclaimed, so now he is looking for a forever home! Chewy is very nervous and was mortified when he first came to us. He has made tremendous strides, though, and now enjoys pets and hanging out with his people. Chewy will need patience as he adjusts and gets to know you and starts to trust. Fast movements can spook him, but we have made lots of progress as far as leashing/unleashing and petting. He loves to go outside with his people to run around, sniff, and play with squeaky plush toys. He does chase the toys when thrown, but he likes to hold them instead of bringing them back. Chewy has met a few similar sized dogs and done okay. He does tend to match the energy of the other dogs, so if the other dog isn’t a fan, neither is Chewy. He has run around outside in a run next to one of our medium dogs and seemed to get excited when she got the zoomies. We are hoping with time and patience in a home, he will blossom! Chewy is looking for a home without children. It would be beneficial for an adopter to have experience with nervous dogs or finicky chihuahuas.Chewy has some allergies that were causing him to have a lot of skin irritation and upset stomach. He is now on a fish-based diet (Purina ProPlan Sensitive Skin and Stomach- Salmon and Rice) as well as Apoquel, once daily, which helped tremendously. He will need to be on this long term.

Story
Marty is the cutest little dog! He is a sweet senior looking to have a loving home for his golden years. He is about 9.5 years old and weighs just at 22lbs. He was actually adopted out from WCHS in 2023 and was recently returned due to his owner having health issues. He’s back at the shelter, loving all the staff and volunteers but he really wants to be in a home! He is kid friendly and is good with dogs, but he can be protective of his owners so having him be the only dog in the household will lead to a happier life for all! He is fully vetted, appears housebroken and loves walks, pets and his favorite….belly rubs!
